Students today are complaining everyday about the stresses they face with balancing school work and home life. This is due to an increase in homework over the years which have not been very beneficial for children or their family. The amount of homework that students are receiving is more of a detriment than a help to them as it is causing undue stress and hindering their ability to learn to their full potential. In order for students to do their best in school and have an interest in learning, there need to be significant changes on the amount of homework given out each week. Students will enjoy school more and achieve better grades if homework practices and policies are adjusted. We are often told that higher amounts of homework improve academic ability and that it allows kids to learn more than what they could learn during school hours. However, the book The Case Against Homework: How Homework Is Hurting Children and What Parents Can Do About It written by Sara Bennett and Nancy Kalish along with the book The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing by Alfie Kohn state that there has been no research correlation between the amount of homework completed and it causing increased achievement levels. One benefit of homework is that it can help students who are struggling in class learn the material better. Another benefit is that it helps the teacher see how well students are retaining the material taught. It also helps build long-term memory, provides additional stimulation, helps develop independent practice, and can help enhance organization and time management skills (Merryn Porter & Eva Kalimar). Many adults in our nation are pushing our students so hard because we want to be the top nation in the world. We want to stay caught up with all of the other nations who advancing in school every day. However, these adults who are pushing students to be smarter never actually had to go through the amount of stress that they are putting on children who are becoming young adults. They never had as much homework as these kids now have and so they don’t truly know how it is damaging

This statement describes the intense issue facing the American Education System today. More and more students are spending a lot of out of school time on enormous amounts of homework. The overabundance of homework is putting pressure on the students, along with their parents. Our nation has steadily focused on after school studying to the point of possible exhaustion. In this paper, I will attempt to explain how educators are relying on homework as the major form of education, and how the amounts are too demanding on the students.
Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.

However, there is an ongoing dispute between critics on whether a lot of homework has more negative effects than positive effects, and vice versa. Homework is the greatest tool for student success, whether they realize it or not, homework is the key to success, it may not be to fun, but it has many positive effects. Homework improves academic success, it develops non-school skills, and it helps involve parents.
Most teachers would think that more homework is something that students should deserve. They believe that homework will make them get better grades, and even a better life. That it will inspire and motivate them to put more effort into what their dream career. But, what if all that isn’t true? What if more homework just decreases a student’s grade, and makes them want to quit life?

This study shows that when students are given homework, their ability to succeed improves. Therefore, students in higher grades benefit from doing homework. This is proven by students receiving higher test scores, “With regard to achievement all eight studies found that homework involving preparation for new material or practice of old material led to higher scores on tests than homework that dealt solely with the content of the present day’s lesson” (“What Research Says about the Value of Homework”). When you prepare for new material to practice on your homework, you will do better. It is important for teachers to give homework so that students can practice for their upcoming tests. Most students typically receive homework every day, and hardworking students will spend at least half an hour on every subject even though they might not have a specific assignment due the next day. Hard working students do this regardless if homework was assigned because they realize the benefits of earning a good grade in a class, and they also learned most likely through trial and error that doing homework is something necessary that can lead grades to improve. Homework can increase grades, and it also serves as a valuable learning tool because it allows the person to make mistakes and learn from them. Parents and students aren’t the only ones who can benefit from this too. By looking at homework scores the teachers can see what the students is struggling or progressing in. Today, many students report more anxiety due to stress than child psychiatric patients did in the 1950’s. In a 2006 survey of 1,300 students at a public high school in Needham, Massachusetts found that 58% of the students surveyed reported between a great deal of stress and extreme stress due to homework (Bennett and Kalish). Many students in today’s time, have so many things to do that it is difficult for them to come home, only to have to finish five to six hours of homework. This, with the added effects of after school activities and technology, only adds to the stress that is put on students.
