James Naismith. “He was born in 1861 in Ramsay township, near Almonte, Ontario, Canada.”(Laughead 1). “The concept of basketball was born from Naismith's school days in the area where he played a simple child's game known as duck-on-a-rock outside his one-room schoolhouse.” (Laughead 1). THe first game ever played was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets for each goal. The game sparked something that would change the world and how people interacted with each other. Many people's lives would be changed all because of one creation. At first the game only had a list of thirteen rules to go along with it. In the NBA today there are way more rules then when it was first invented. These rules are created to make sure the game is under control and that no one gets …show more content…
Each team has their own goal which is at each end of the basketball court. The game is split into four different parts or two halves. The time for each quarter varies depending on what type of basketball game it is. At halftime the players will switch goals. A game of basketball starts with a tip off which is when a referee stands at the center of the court and throws the ball up in the air and the person that tips the ball to their teammate will then have possession. The team that has the most points at the end of the game will be counted as the winner.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) plays a total of eighty two games in one season. The top eight teams for each conference qualify for the playoffs and will have a chance to win the championship. The teams then play each other in a seven game series to see who will be in the finals which are the final two teams playing against each other for the championship. There are many different leagues in basketball which include basketball for europeans, women, asians and many more. Basketball has expanded to many different cultures around the world since it was first
In the 1930’s basketball was a popular sport. In the 30’s basketball courts and gear were less regulated than today. “Basketball was born in the mind of an Ontario man [...] who founded the first team at Kansas [...]” (Winn 1). This is a past time that everybody enjoys. “Allen had prototypes constructed for practice and spent decades lobbying the NCAA rules [...]” (Winn 1). It is hard for people to ask the NCAA to change the rules of basketball. The rims were set as 12 foot rims until 1955 (Winn 1). It is so hard to
Since its creation in 1893, the sport of basketball has been one of the most popular sports in the United States. One wouldn’t have to search long to find a basketball court and a pickup game in most American cities. Many people around the world look up to the stars of the National Basketball Association as role models. Despite the vast popularity of basketball, there is only one major league in America: The National Basketball Association, to be referred to in this work as the NBA.
Although the 1992 Olympic Men’s Basketball Team is considered the greatest assemblage of professional athletes in history, the Dream Team does have its critics. Regardless of the bureaucratic problems that stemmed from allowing NBA players to compete in the Olympics, many benefits were reaped by intertwining the two associations. Even though the basketball that was played with the Dream Team did not differ fundamentally, it changed the game of basketball forever because it respected the historical values, inspired young basketball players to pursue their NBA and Olympic dreams, and it treated book reviewers to an action-packed topic whilst also changing international basketball for the better.
Backstory of Basketball Basketball has been played since 1891, and still continues to be played today as well. Basketball is an intriguing game played by 2 teams with 5 players from each team on the court at the same time. Basketball, as it started out in 1891 had no African American athletes in the sport. That was still going on, even as late as the 1950’s.
December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
Basketball is defined as a game where two teams of five play each on a rectangular court, usually indoors (Basketball/Sport). Basketball was invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891 (Basketball/Sport). The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the

Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
As people look back on the sport of basketball, most would notice it was once six on six instead of five on five. In case someone doesn’t know what basketball is, it is a sport where teams try to advance the ball and shoot it through one basket and to keep the opposition from scoring through the other. Women’s basketball has grown rapidly since the 1970’s. Until then, women and girls had been allowed to play only a six-player game in which offensive and defensive players were rooted to one half of the court (Basketball). It seems completely bizarre to even think about the game with twelve players on the court rather than ten. An abundant amount of things changed when they transitioned into the new system of basketball. Defense, offense, amount
Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. Basketball was a simple game that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith spread the rules freely, and there was a need for Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest "Phog" Allen (1885-1974), who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas and went on to win 771 games as a coa...
Basketball was created as a sport in 1891 by James Naismith, and it quickly became popular among both men and women. It initially started with the same rules for each gender, but according to Patricia Cain in her article, “Women, Race, and Sports: Life Before Title IX,” the rules quickly changed for women. Cain (2001) states that, “Almost immediately, however, some educators began changing the rules of basket...

Basketball has become an international sport. People all around the world enjoy playing it with friends, or even competing for a championship. But haven’t you always wondered where it all began, who were the first people to play it, and who thought of something as simple as putting a ball through a hoop?
Basketball is a popular sport that millions of people play around the world but does everyone know how basketball started and how it evolved throughout history? “Many people do not know that basketball was around since the early 1890s. In 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian-American sports teacher invented this simple sport”(Livestrong.com). Certainly the rules and the style of play wasn’t similar as today’s game. When it was first played in the early ages, there were more carrying the ball and tackling other players in order to get the ball.
Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. The National Basketball Association has risen in popularity and is now one of America’s more popular sports. Because basketball continues to be a popular sport, a fan should learn about the origin of the NBA, how the game evolved from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, and how the players today impact the way it is played.
