Society already has their minds made up of what you’re supposed to look like, how you are supposed to talk, and even how you are supposed to act. Being completely different seems to be a bigger deal than some people make it out to be. Everyone is going to look at you and assume you are a certain way because of the way you look. You just have to learn to cope with it.
For example religion has always had a lot to do with who you are or were. Not as much today but back then years from now there were certain things you had to believe in just to be considered a part of your town or to be accepted. Just like in the story The Crucible, everyone was expected to be pure and worship there god. If you didn't you might as well be dead. Society shaped them to be honest and follow the way of god. Today society has shaped us to realize that people can’t help what they’re born with. I think that society has no other choice but to make us more accepting. But it hasn't always been that way and not everyones going to accept you. In the novel Of Mice and Men George's companion Lennie was mentally challenged after being kicked in the head by a horse. George learned to cope with him and be okay with it. A lot of characters in the novel looked at it differently as if it were his fault. Curley was extremely harsh to him. In today's society everyone knows you don't fight a person who isn't all mentally there. It’s just wrong and everyone knows it.
