In Stave V, Scrooge learns that business is not all about money, he realizes that business is about loving and helping others. Scrooge wants to help his worker Bob Cratchit. For example Scrooge exclaims ‘’’I am about to raise your salary!’’’ (121)This evidence demonstrates that Scrooge is being loving and is giving his clerk a raise. Another piece of evidence states ‘’’...and endeavor to assist your struggling family.’’’ This evidence shows that Scrooge is helping out Bob Cratchit’s struggling family because Scrooge has learned that business is not about the money it is about caring and helping out others. In the first stave, Dickens tries to point out that Scrooge is a character that society considers negative. In the introduction, Dickens points out Scrooge’s wealth to immediately aim any point about society not only to average people but in particular to people of Scrooge’s similar wealth, he does this by describing Scrooge as ‘an excellent man of business on the very day of the funeral.
The true description of Scrooge first appears about quarter way through the book, before then there are only a few minor references to his character. The description begins metaphorically as it features the words “ A tight-fisted hand at the grindstone”. Its metaphorical because it is trying to portray that Scrooge is literally as tight as the hand to the grindstone. Then soon after this seven adjectives follow, “ Squeezing, Wrenching, Grasping, Scraping, Clutching, Covetous, Old sinner”. They are used effectively as each one has an individual meaning describing seven trates of Scrooges character, which begins to give the reader a visual picture of how the character may conduct himself. So far all qualities of Scrooge have been negative and so it continues. Then the writer brings in the object “flint” and states all the negative quality’s of flint then compares them to Scrooge.

Lao Tzu once said that “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” This quote means that if you stay on a bad path you are eventually going to end in a bad spot. People need to change themselves if they don’t want to end their life in a negative way. If you stay on the right path then your end will be much better. Scrooge needs to change because he knows what his future is like and how he will end up when he dies. Scrooge was visited by three ghosts and he was able to change himself for the better good.
The novel introduces Scrooge as a man of greed. This is shown in the first stave when Scrooge's clerk Bob Cratchit can barely keep warm by such a small fire "that it looked like one coal." Because of Scrooge's greed, he insists on storing up on his wealth by burning less coal, despite it's lack of warmth. Furthermore, one can notice Scrooge's greed as he refuses to give any donation from his surplus wealth to the poor and destitute that the collectors were raising money for. Scrooge's selfish response to the collectors was, " 'I wish to be left alone...I don't make merry myself at Christmas, and I can't afford to make idle people merry..."

Fred, Scrooge’s nephew from A Christmas Carol states,“There are many things from which I have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say…” Fred is explaining to Scrooge that although Christmas time may not bring wealth and power, it brings even more value such as family. He is trying to show Scrooge that money is not what will bring oneself satisfaction, but that doing things for which one may not get credit and acknowledgement from may still be worthy. These will bring one happiness and a memorable experience instead. “Do the kinds of things that come from the heart. When you do, you won’t be dissatisfied, you won’t be envious, you won’t be longing for somebody else’s things. On the contrary, you will be overwhelmed with what comes back.” This quote from the article “Tuesdays with Morrie: The Eighth Tuesday We Talk About Money”is significant because it once again displays that doing things that come from inside one will make one feel proud of what one has done. This self satisfaction will help boost confidence and gives oneself pride. Longing for someone else’s belongings and being dissatisfied is not what this act will result in. On the contrary, one will be overcome with joy and generosity, overwhelmed with the happiness the deed returns to back to oneself. This also relates to what Fred said as to that although Christmas may not bring monetary value, but on the other hand brings value in others ways such as happiness with family and giving oneself satisfaction from doing nice things. These two explanations show that these experiences will bring self satisfaction to oneself and will be more worthy and memorable than any possession ever will
