The Razor of Regret Most people’s prime directive in life is pursuing their dreams; some would go to any extent to attain their goals. This shows through for Santiago in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. In this book, Santiago pursues his treasure that he discovered in a dream. On his journey, he learns about life through his experiences and learns the importance of following one’s dreams through good examples as well as bad. In this novel, the author reveals that following one’s dreams is essential to finding happiness and how without the hope of a better future, life is menial. In the story, Santiago learns early on in his journey what can happen if one were to not follow their dreams. He meets a crystal merchant for whom he works for a while. Later on it is revealed that the crystal merchant has to travel to the city of Mecca in order to meet the five obligations of the Muslim faith. The crystal merchant talks to Santiago about why he cannot change paths now because he is swept with regret for having missed his opportunity “‘Well why don’t you go to Mecca now?’ asked the boy. ‘Because it's the thought of Mecca that keeps me alive… I'm afraid if that if my dream of going to Mecca is realized I’ll have no reason to go on living”(Coelho 55). This illustrates that we can dream all we would like to but if we do not take that dream by the reins and hold on then it means nothing.
