Repetition
In Poe’s poem, “Annabel lee”, repetition is a poetic device that is used throughout the whole poem. The name “Annabel Lee” is repeated in every one of the six stanzas. By repeating the name, the author emphasises the importance of “Annabel Lee”. She is the main focus of the poem. By using repetition, Poe captures the reader’s attention and makes them want to continue reading to understand the poem. In addition, the repetition of the name makes the poem flow well and easy to read.

There is a gargantuan of disparate poems these days that have the tone, feel, and structure that gives them the illusion of being similar; although, many of them have contrasting structure and other qualities that make them completely different after further analysis. “Annabel Lee", by Edgar Allan Poe and "Remember", by Christina Rossetti, compare in a prolific amount because their story, tone, and structure exemplify the idea that both of these two specific poems compare and contrast, which makes them similar, yet different. First of all, the themes that are within these poems have the indistinguishable topic of love, but Edgar Allan Poe adds a sense of morbidity to the idea of true love. In other words, Christina Rossetti uses the euphoric themes of love, remembrance, and forgiveness after a death or loss of a loved one.
Some examples of repetition are how the narrator keeps repeating whether or not the narrator thinks he is mad and why. Examples are: “But why will you say that I am mad?” “How, then, am I mad?” “And have I not told you that what you mistake for madness is but an over-acuteness of the senses?” And so on and so on. Poe also uses punctuation to create pacing, like: “all closed, closed” “slowly, very-very slowly” “Cautiously, oh, so cautiously-cautiously” etc. etc.
The entire poem including the first stanza, as scanned here, is octametre with mostly trochaic feet and some iams. The use of a longer line enables the poem to be more of a narration of the evening's events. Also, it enables Poe to use internal rhymes as shown in bold. The internal rhyme occurs in the first and third lines of each stanza. As one reads the poem you begin to expect the next rhyme pushing you along. The external rhyme of the "or" sound in Lenore and nevermore at then end of each stanza imitates the haunting nature of the narrator's thoughts. The internal rhyme along with the same external rhyme repeated at the end of each stanza and other literary devices such as alliteration and assonance and give the poem a driving chant-like sound. The musicality of the rhyme also helps one to memorize the poem. This helps keep the poem in your head after you've finished reading it, lingering in your thoughts just as the narrator's thoughts are haunting him. In "Annabel Lee", a young man is mourning the death of a beautiful young lady. Even though the woman had died quite some time ago, the man is still in melancholy. He misses her terribly and constantly thinks of how she was she was tragically taken from him by the angels who were jealous of their love, and by her family who didn't think the he himself was capable of bringing her to her final resting place. He loved Annabel Lee more than anyother human can love another. The following quote tells the reader how much he loves her and shows that he would do anything for her, even if that means sleeping by her tomb, each and every night. Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. Many literary critics have observed and noted the use of single effect in Edgar Allan Poe’s works. In “The Raven,” Poe chooses single effect as a dominant attribute to the poem as a whole. Edgar Allan Poe is widely recognized for his use of darkness in many of his works. In “The Raven,” the darkness in the poem encourages the namelessness of Lenore and the despair of the speaker. The darkness the speaker sees beyond his door is actually Lenore. However, his beloved is still absent. The darkness the speaker sees is not only Lenore but it is also the dreaded raven. Along with imagery and symbolism, Poe incorporates many poetic elements to express his feeling. These include assonance, alliteration, and rhyme. Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds. Poe’s life is reflected through Poe utilises the device of trochaic octameter meaning that the trochee begins with a syllable that is stressed followed by a weak (unstressed) syllable (Study Institution, 2013). The overall aim of using trochaic octameter is to exaggerate the stressed words, creating hyperbole. Using the first two lines of the first stanza as an example, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore…” it is evident that every pair of words is a trochee, a set of stressed and unstressed syllables (Dictionary.com, 2015). When hyperbole is apparent, it also allows the alliteration to be enhanced. This usage of unorthodox language creates a theatrical, dramatic, and climactic effect, which leads to an impassioned tone. By presenting both tones, Poe is able to show the contrast between the two. This transformation from a tone that is mellow to one of frustration and anxiety represents the spiraling downward of the narrator’s mental state.

The eternal love may appear sweet at first but grows more and more unsettling. Poe uses various technical devices to better convey the themes of love, mortality, and the supernatural seen throughout the work of art. Poe’s use of technical devices in Annabel Lee are plentiful and unconventional. The rhyme scheme begins with a traditional ABABCB. The next stanza, however, continues with a different rhyme scheme, DBEBFB.
The first two stanzas of The Raven introduce you to the narrator, and his beloved maiden Lenore. You find him sitting on a “dreary” and dark evening with a book opened in front of him, though he is dozing more than reading. Suddenly, he hears knocking on his door, but only believes it to be a visitor nothing more. He remembers another night, like this one, where he had sought the solace this poem thinking daffodils and sunshine, but howling winds and shadows. By using these words, Poe gives you the sense of being isolated and alone. He also contrasts this isolation, symbolized by the storm and the dark chamber, with the richness of the objects in the library. The furnished room also reminds him of the beauty of his lost Lenore. Also, Poe uses a rhythm in his beginning stanza, using “ta continue reading. And at the end of each stanza, “nothing more” or “nevermore” is like the door slamming of the library. One of the genius factors of Poe’s writing is his way of working his way into the human psyche, with nothing more than a few words and a perfect setting. You can not really relate to someone, who is being chased by a monster, because even though it only answers in the negative over and over again to whatever question is asked, slowly driving the narrator insane. One wonders if Poe himself wrote this poem late at night, under the flickering of candlelight, not having enough sleep or enough to eat, yet under influences such as alcohol, etc. With the narrators mention of the angel-named Lenore, “Nameless here for evermore,” Poe is possibly reaching out for his lost love long dead to him. People wanted to be taken away from the torments of the physical world, the Revolutionary War had ended years before, yet the country was still trying to be a united country, and to clean up the ravages of war. Families had lost vital members of their home, and more and more immigrants were coming into the country to make something of themselves. The cities were filled with business and urban development, while the rural areas were filled with crops growing up again on the torn land, and people progressed closer and closer to the edges of needed a release from everyday life, something they could read by the fire at night that would take them away into another world. Poe was a master at this. In the first two stanzas of Poe’s The Raven, we learn of the setting for the narrator’s psychological breakdown.
