At the beginning of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, an aging pig named Old Major gives a speech to the rest of the animals. In his speech, he explains to them how awful their lives are in order to shows them that the Rebellion against Man, their one true enemy, will come soon. Old Major appeals to the animal’s emotions by using rhetorical questions and fear to effectively persuade the animals of the coming Rebellion.
Language is a tool used by all of humanity, with the ability to express the emotions and thoughts of people worldwide. “Animal Farm” by George Orwell focuses on three pigs that go by the names of; Napoleon, Squealer and Snowball. These three take command of the farm they reside on after overthrowing their human master freeing them and the other animals on the farm. After the expulsion of Snowball later on in the story, Napoleon declares himself leader of the farm. In order to secure a life of luxury for Napoleon and his fellow pigs, Napoleon (with Squealer as his spokesman) uses language that distorts the truth, language that intimidates, and language that appeals to the emotions of others to manipulate the gullible animals of Animal Farm.
In the middle of the 1930s, Adolf Hitler began his rise to power in Germany, initiating the start of the Second World War and spread fear across Western Europe. The book was written by George Orwell a child of English settlers in India named at birth Eric Arthur Blair .He moved later back to England where he published most of his books, including Animal farm and Nineteen Eighty-four (1949) his two most successful novels. Often time, authors use different tactics to develop a characterization. The book,“Animal Farm” by George Orwell, is a story about farm animals overthrowing the farmer and taking control of the farm. Through both direct and indirect characterization, Orwell’s depiction of Boxer, satirically representing the Russian working- class, is shown to be dumb, hard working, and dedicated.
The characters and events that George Orwell put in his novel Animal Farm, can be linked to the similar events and people associated with the Russian Revolution. People like Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky can be compared and represented by the 2 pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, in Orwell’s Animal Farm. By writing this novel, Orwell attempted to expose the truth behind the totalitarian-type government in Russia at that time. However, he did this in a discreet way by using animals to symbolize the different people that played a role in the Revolution.
Throughout the story, the first signal that illustrates the corruption in pigs started right after the animals chased away Mr. Jones. When the animals milked the cows and discussed about what to do with all the milk, Napoleon cried “Never mind the milk, comrades…placing himself in front of the buckets” (p18) and then all buckets of milk disappeared. This is foreshadowing that later Napoleon may become the kind of leader who keeps everything good for himself and does not care about others, and this actually happened later. Several days later, someone found out that all the milk was mixed in pigs’ mash everyday as well as the apples and pointed that pigs broke the rule of “All animals are equal” (p17).
The animals believe that the pigs have their best interests in mind, simply because they are the smartest. As utopian as this view is, it is not the case. When it comes to decision making Squealer explains to them that Napoleon would be “only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?” (Orwell 55). When the animals put their faith into this single phrase, their right to a say in the government is gone. The naive animals believe Squealer. This belief inhibits them from taking decisions into their own hands. They are always reliant on Napoleon, even when his decisions don’t benefit them.
Later on in the book is when the pigs really start to receive treatment that no other animals get. For example, on page 99 it says, “when a pig and any other animal meet on a path, the other animal must step aside.” Page 104 says, “there was a schoolhouse built for the pigs.” The pigs are teaching the younger pigs that they are of higher power. They want to remain higher than all of the other animals. Another time is when Napoleon sends Boxer to a slaughterhouse but tells all the animals that he was sent to a doctor. Squealer convinces them that Boxer died peacefully and uses ethos and pathos when he says that Boxers last words were: “Long live Comrade Napoleon! Napoleon is always right.” Squealer tells them this because many of the animals look up to Boxer so they will follow his words. One of the Seven Commandments was: Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. On page 117, the pigs walk out of the the farmhouse on their hind legs. Yet not one animal speaks up because they are now all terrified. The next day, all pigs who are supervising are carrying whips. Still, not one animal speaks because no one wants to be killed. In the end, the pigs end up being just like the humans, they are the enemy too. The animals never put a stop to this because they were always told that this needed to happen if they did
The first way the pigs use language to abuse their power is by using extensive detail and by using terms and vocabulary foreign to most animals. An example of the pigs using unknown terms can be found when Squealer explains to the other animals about how hard the pigs need to work to keep the farm running. “There was, as Squealer was never tired of explaining, endless work in the supervision and organization of the farm. Much of this work was of a kind that the other animals were too ignorant to understand. For example, Squealer told them that the pigs had to expend enormous labours every day upon mysterious things called ‘files,’ ‘reports,’ ‘minutes,’ and ‘memoranda’…” (129). In this scene, the animals, exhausted, hungry, and overworked, are told about how the pigs work just as hard as they do. Although this is completely untrue, seeing that the pigs only occupy themselves in self-centered and self-beneficial engagements, the other animals believe it to be true because they do not know what files, reports, minutes, or memoranda are. Their ignorance leaves them unable to question Squealers story and they mistake the pigs’ true...
At the beginning on the text, after the rebellion, the animals are all seen as equal, with a high quality of life. Napoleon and Squealer often mentioned how important it was for all animals to do their equal share of work; however they often did little to no work. They were able to do this by Squealer acting as the media and reminding the animals that the hard work that the pigs did deserved a larger break then everyone else. As the text progressed, Napoleon and his small group of pigs slowly changed the commandments to suit themselves. Many animals didn’t question the change in commandments; and when they did they were either proven wrong or made an example of via public executions. During chapter 6, the pigs are questioned after allegedly breaking the 4th commandment “no animals shall sleep in a bed”. Squealer was quick to react, by stating that the pigs required extra rest due to how smart they were. When Muriel goes to read the commandments to prove that what the pigs are doing is wrong, she finds that the board now states “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets”. Through this, the pigs where able to gain control at a rapid pace and adjust the rules to have the most benefits in their

Language plays a very important role in the pig’s power. Due to the pigs being the smartest, language can be used to keep their power over the other animals. The pigs use their intelligence and language to manipulate the other animals on the farm. They would say “All animals are equal.”(11) but they know that they are superior due to their ability to manipulate the others through language. Squealer for example would use words that many animals would not understand to make the animals think being ruled by the pigs is a good thing. Through language the pigs are able to secure their position as leaders on the farm as well as get the animals working for less.
