The earth was created 4.6 billion years ago and ever since then, radiation has existed on earth. No matter where you are or where you go, radiation will always be present. Radiation is defined as the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles. High amounts of radiation may cause some serious side effects such as various types of cancer such as skin cancer, lung cancer and bone marrow cancer which can turn into acute leukemia which affects our white blood cells. However, not all types of radiation will cause damage to your body. Non-ionizing radiation is any type of electromagnetic radiation that does not carry enough energy to ionize atoms or molecules to completely remove an electron from an atom or
a molecule. Some of these non-ionizing radiation would include visible light, radar, laser light, ultraviolet lights, and microwaves. But all of these can still cause damage tissues if we are exposed too much to them. For example, Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) triggers cells in the skin to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is important because it helps our body to absorb calcium for our diet. However, if get exposed to too much (UV) it could cause mutations in DNA of skin cells resulting in cancer. This would lead to my experiment on whether or not we can get large amounts of radiation in our body from eating foods that have been heated up by a microwave. In addition to the sun, UV waves are emitted by lights used in tanning beds, lights used to pasteurize fruit juices and black lights. Radiation is something that kills us, but we can’t live without it. High amounts of radiation is used when taking an MRI or an x-ray. Both of which help us diagnose the problem on what’s wrong but can affect us badly in the long run. X-rays use ionizing radiation. The word “ionize” means to become converted into an ion or ions by removing one or more electrons. It is estimated that about two-thirds of the damage caused by x-rays is due to indirect action. Meaning that the x-ray targets the wrong area and would mess up the function of DNA which would affect the whole entire cell.
Radiation exposure can affect children as well an children have the risk of being the most harmfully effected by radiation because their body absorbs substances differently also their bodies can or are more likely to get certain kinds of cancers from too much exposure, “they are also closer to the ground, where radioactive fallouts settle.”
There are essentially three main types of cancer treatments; surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Surgery allows doctors to effectively remove tumors from a clear plane. Chemotherapy uses drugs to treat the tumor; but often the drugs affect other healthy cells in the process. Using radiation as a treatment can be either precise or vague. Many health stigmas can come from the vague forms of radiation or conventional radiation therapy. Conventional radiation treats both the unhealthy and healthy cells, therefore exposing healthy cells to harmful radiation (Radiation Oncology, 2011, p.6). When healthy cells are exposed to gamma radiation they are also exposed to ionizing radiation. The ionization can cause “breakage of chemical bonds or oxidization (addition of oxygen atoms)” in a cell; the main impact of this is on a cell’s DNA, if two strands of DNA break it can result in “mutations, chromosome aberrations, ...
There are numerous reasons as to why I want to pursue my dream of becoming a radiation therapist. The most important reason is because I love to help other people overcome any problem they are facing. However saving a patient’s life through radiation would be even more amazing. Not to mention, after obtaining the proper education, the salary I receive will be fairly high. Cancer has recently become a part of many families, including my own. I see what a few of my family members are going through and having to struggle with every single day in order to live to see another day, The struggles that they go through have opened my mind in many ways, I wish I was the one that they could come to for a chance of survival, but I can’t, so in order for me to help cancer patients fight for their lives, I will obtain the proper education, licenses, and possess the numerous skills needed by a radiation therapist..
Paul Zindel Jr., born May 15, 1936, is a famous American novelist and playwright that is most notable for his work “The Pigman.”
Radioactivity is a particle that released from nuclei as the result from the unstable nuclear. Because the nucleus it’s a conflict experiences that intense between the two strongest forces in nature so there are many nuclear isotopes that unstable and emit some radiations.
First, it’s important to know what EMF radiation is. The full name of EMF is Electromagnetic fields. It’s a kind of area that we may be involved into every time we watching TV, using cell phone, turning on a light switch or using an electric appliance. EMF is a generic term of force generated by magnetic fields or electrical charges. Sometimes, EMF can be considered as a kind of radiation when release energy. When we use some electric appliances, the electromagnetic waves of these appliances will change periodically and produce enough energy to cause ionization. As we all known, ionization can dislodge orbiting electrons from atoms or break bonds which hold molecules together and then producing ions or charged particles. During this process, the production of ions or ionization in our tissues may cause direct damage to cells and cause other health risks. So EMF radiation is also called ionizing radiation. (DCMNR, 2005) This conception maybe a little bit confusing, but it’s easy to find out that EMF really produces some extra electrons or magnetic field which we have never seen before. So scientists began to do some experiments to figure out that whether EMF has health hazar...
This primordial radiation can be utilized for multiple things, from cooking food to military radar. Despite this, direct exposure may be harmful to organic life. The exact effects of prolonged exposure to radiation may depend on the form and frequency of said radiation. Regardless, ancient light, in the form of microwaves, blesses our daily lives, while simultaneously providing an unseen risk. Multiple forms of radiation can be found in our everyday lives.
Radiation is the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles; an example of radiation is, electromagnetic radiation. This is a form of radiant energy which travels through space via electromagnetic waves. These waves can be found in the electromagnetic spectrum. This is the range of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation. The range of waves in the electromagnetic spectrum range from radio waves, to gamma rays, the waves in the middle consists of infrared, visible, and ultraviolet waves. In this spectrum frequency and wavelength play a big part on which kind of wave is present. At different frequencies, (the amount of waves per second) and wavelength ,( the length of the wave measured from peak to peak) there are different waves, as these factors change so does the property of the wave. In this essay I will be talking about ultraviolet radiation.
Radiate, by definition, means to send or spread out, and this is important to know when thinking about how exactly radiation occurs. We already discussed a child coming in from playing out in the snow, snuggling up to their father and getting warm through heat transfer by conduction- physical contact. Now, let’s say that the child comes inside from out in the cold, takes off their snow gear and places their hands over a hot fire instead. The child’s hands will warm up through the transfer of heat energy through radiation. Another example, which can be seen every day that you walk outside and the sun is shining bright- is the heat received on Earth by the sun, through the means of radiation. The Earth receives heat through the electromagnetic waves, and our bodies feel the warmth of the sun from these waves that are absorbed within our skin. Radiation is the only means by which heat energy can transfer through the empty space between Earth and the sun- neither conduction or convection have the ability to play a role in this area and therefore, we can see how truly important radiation is. Another interesting fact in regards to radiation is that “because more heat is radiated at higher temperatures, a temperature change is accompanied by a color change. For example, an electrical element on a stove glows from red to orange, while the
Radiation is the process of emitting radiant energy in the form of waves or particles that travels through a medium or space. Radiation sources can be divided into two main categories which are non-ionizing radiation and ionizing radiation. Non-ionizing radiation includes natural background sources and man-made sources. The sun is one of the major background sources of radiation. It sends out ultraviolet rays that penetrate and damage human skin by causing sunburn. Certain minerals that make up part of the earth contain the radioactive elements. The levels may typically be in the range of 15 to 60 counts per minute that will vary depending upon one’s location on the earth, and the efficiency of the radiation sensor used.
I am for Radiation in the form of medicine because it has helped a lot of hospitals to cure patients. Radiotherapy, or Radiation therapy, is one of the most common treatment for cancer. They also use x-rays, gamma rays, electrons beams, and protons to weaken or destroy the cancer cells. People normally use Radiotherapy because it has been known to be the most effective in killing the cancer cells. There are other methods to kill cancer but Radiotherapy is the most common procedure.
The energy in ionizing radiation can cause chemical changes in the the cells that can lead to damaging them. Most of the cells can either permanently or temporarily become abnormal or they can just die. Radiation can cause cancer by damaging the DNA in the body. The damage of the cells can also depend on how long the organs are exposed (environmental protection agency, 2017, unknown). If someone has many exposures at one time that radiation in the body keeps adding on. As well as if its only a little bit of exposure in on day and years later you get exposed again it keeps adding on the radiation will never leave the body. Having radiation in your body doesn’t affect you right away but as you get older it starts to show and you feel it. Chronic exposure is when someone is exposed many time for long periods. When this happens the type of effects it will carry is having harmful generic change, cancer, tumors, and even cataracts. Partial health effects can also depend on if it was internal or external exposure. Internal exposure is when either by drinking, breathing, eating and even an injection cause radiation to get inside your body. External exposure is when taking an x-ray out of your body and letting it go through letting all the energy go as it goes in (environmental protection agency, 2017, unknown). In the dental world radiation gets into the patients when we take x-rays on there teeth. In order to avoid to much radiation on them we put a lead apron on them and make sure to cover their thyroid which is the most common way of getting cancer when taking an x-ray. When we take the x-ray we stand behind a wall at least 6 feet away to avoid ourself from getting
Whether the source of radiation is natural or man made, whether it is a small dose of radiation or a large dose, there will be some biological effects. Radiation causes ionizations of atoms, which will affect molecules, which may affect cells, which may affect tissues, and so on. Although most people tend to think of biological effects in terms of the effect of radiation on living cells, in actuality, ionizing radiation, by definition, interacts only with atoms by a process called ionization (Chandra p. 205). Thus, all biological damage effects begin with the consequence of radiation interactions with the atoms forming the cells.
Cell phones represent a type of technology that has been around for more than over fifty years; it has only been recently that many people began to use cell phones as a major part of their everyday life. In the past cell phones were for business people to conduct their business, but in today’s society every one owns a cell phone. Cell phones are interesting, useful and also play a major role in our life’s bringing people closer and keeping in touch with one another. Most people do not know and understand the physics of a cell phone. Cell phones are also known as cellular phone, hand phone, and commonly known as a mobile phone. A cell phone is an electric device that can make and receive calls, over and automatic repeat request (radio link petrol -RLP) used over wireless air interdace.it us a portable telephone that uses and receive phone signals.it also divides that earth into small regional called cells.in the resent estimates there are over 190 million people using mobile phone. One of the primary health concerns is the impact of cell phone radiation, by radio waves by which it operates.
did manage to muster enough money to travel to Mars, the worry about the unknown amount radiation in space begins a whole new list of problems. One article stated, “Most estimates strongly imply that returning astronauts will have exceeded their lifetime radiation dosages, with consequent increases in cancer rates” (“Mars Travel and Radiation”). Radiation sources reside between the planets in the form of solar flares. Another example of radiation in space presents itself in the form of cosmic rays that exist on the surface of Mars. These atom fragments enter Mars’s thin atmosphere and create an environment that would be unsafe to live in without the proper protection.
