Essay 1
Poetry and rap songs are created to tell a story, to describe one’s feeling, and to express oneself. Poetry and gangsta rap songs have some in commons and contrast. In this essay, I would like to talk about the commons, and how they both applied literary terms in “My Mind Playin’ Tricks On Me” and “Gretel in Darkness.” Poets and lyricists use literary devices in their poetry and songs, and I would like to talk about alliteration, enjambment, and onomatopoeia. I also want to discuss about one out of the five categories, fatalism, in gangsta rap song and how it relates to “Gretel in Darkness.”
“This is the world we wanted/…/we are there still and it is real, real. / that

black forest and the fire in earnest” (Gluck line 1, 23-24). The author used alliteration to emphasize the words “world we wanted”. He wanted to point out that Hansel and Gretel helped create the “world” that they wanted. They killed the witch but Gretel still lives in fear of the traumatic experience. She goes to sleep every night behind barred, closed doors but she still fears the event that she and her brother had to go through. In the tale “Gretel in Darkness”, Gluck writes, “This is the world we wanted” (line 1). The sound of “w” is repeated in this quote, the reason why the author used alliteration in this poetry because he wanted certain things to stand out, so the reader will keep the important information in mind. In the rap song “My Mind Playin’ Tricks On Me”, “Candlesticks in the dark, visions of bodies bin’ burned” (Ghetto Boys 1-2). In this example, the author used alliteration to create a dark, grisly image for the readers that he cannot sleep at night because of the images burned into his mind by the candles of bodies burning. Onomatopoeia is word that copies the natural sounds of things.
One of Louise Gluck’s examples is: “Am I alone? Spies/ Hiss in the stillness, Hansel,” (lines 16-17). The author used onomatopoeia to create a sound, an emotion of Gretel frightened, and an image that gives a picture of Gretel is alone. “Hiss” is a word that imitates the sound of a snake hissing in the silence, “stillness”. In “My Mind Playin’s Tricks on Me”, “So I swung and hit the nigga in his mouth” (Ghetto Boys line 8). In this example, “swung” is a verb, but it also makes a sound of the speaker is hitting the antagonist. “What I saw will make your ass giggling” ( Ghetto Boys line 15), instead of saying “laughing”, the speaker used “giggling” to describe that he would amuse the folks to make them giggle in a ruthless …show more content…
manner. The last literary term I want to discuss is enjambment. Enjambment is a literary term that expresses one idea from one line to the next with a punctuation mark at the end of the line. An example:” Night I turn to you to hold me/ but you are not there” (Gluck line 14-15). Gretel is disheartened, because she is scared and wants Hansel to comfort her, but Gretel is alone by herself. Another example:” I know the Lord is looking at me/ but yet and still its’s hard for me to feel happy.” (Ghetto Boys line 7-8). The speaker expressed that nothing can please him, except for the lord, but in his mind he knows the lord is looking out for him, yet it is still difficult for him to feel better. Authors use enjambment to catch the readers’ attention, so the reader can continue reading to the next line. Enjambment creates an exciting and a curious feeling that make the reader want to move on the next line to find out what happens next. John Paul Hampstead said “This chaotic, murderous environment prompts more reflective rappers to lament the harsh, cold world in which they live and the powerless of human existence.”(86), this can be applied to “Gretel in Darkness” and “My Mind Playing’ Tricks On Me” because both talked about fatalism.
Fatalism is a term that describe cruel, murderous and survival experiences. Gluck’s poem talks about Gretel and Hansel trying to escape from the witch without getting eaten, and Gretel killed the witch by pushing her into the flame, “But I killed for you. I see armed firs/The spires of that gleaming kiln” (line 17-18). The Ghetto Boys also wrote a similar line: “But fuck that shit, there’s a nigga trying to kill me.” (line 16). The speaker is having an anxiety that somebody is trying to kill him. He wants to forget about everything else because someone is out there trying to take his life
away. In conclusion, certain poetry and rap song are closely related to each other. They use literary terms as well as the five categories of gangsta rap song like treasure, fatalism, feasting, raiding, and misogyny. It fascinates me of how similar poetry and rap songs are, and yet still very different. “Gretel In Darkness” and “My Mind Playing Tricks On Me” are both very similar in their message, since they both talk about their emotions, fears, and their survival. Both the poem and the song talk about traumatic experiences that were life threatening to the characters. They also admit to having fear and anxiety because their lives were in danger, which is a natural reaction to life-threatening situations. Rap songs and poetry come from different environments, different sayings, and different thoughts, but surprisingly they are closely related through the use of imagery, alliteration, rhetoric and rhyme.
In the article “ From Fly to Bitches and Hoes” by Joan Morgan, she often speaks about the positive and negative ideas associated with hip-hop music. Black men display their manhood with full on violence, crime, hidden guilt, and secret escapes through drugs and alcohol. Joan Morgan’s article views the root causes of the advantage of misogyny in rap music lyrics. In the beginning of the incitement her desires shift to focus on from rap culture condemnation to a deeper analysis of the root causes. She shows the hidden causes of unpleasant sexism in rap music and argues that we need to look deeper into understanding misogyny. I agree with Joan Morgan with the stance that black men show their emotions in a different way that is seen a different perspective.
In Adam Bradley’s “Rap poetry 101” he shows us how rap is more than just songs being sung, it is poetry; it is something that has an empowering ability to make the familiar unfamiliar. In this chapter Bradley creates a new viewpoint too rap. Bradley shows us how rap and poetry has become a very similar piece of art that should be further appreciated. In the chapter poetry 101 Bradley describes how rap is a form of public art, and how rappers have become our greatest public poets. The importance of rap as poetry is shown throughout Bradley's book as well as the evidence behind the reasons rap is poetry.
According to the book the series of creative responses to the suffering of black American are not so complex. Perry’s polemic is open for discussion because it is inevitably connected with selection and interpretation. For example the constant discussion of rascally, when doing break dance, outlaw gangstas misses during the earlier days of hip-hop, graffiti and also electric boogaloo developed a space for Afro-American recognition. It was perhaps more concerning about pure hedonism than knowingly discussing on the deadlock of race relations. Creating imagery for the genre was essential hence the need for the use of metaphor in hip-hop plays on the black slaves looking for freedom as well as the hip hop
Song lyrics have set off a great generation of our leisure time than reading poetic devices, therefore song lyrics are better than poetic devices. Song lyrics have dropped numerous lines that attach to us now a days and make us listen to the line over and over unlike poetic devices. Song Lyrics have so much meaning by word choice and by relations.”Mr. Rager” by Kid Cudi, is about people fed up with society and plan on taking a journey. “Dreams” by Edgar Allen Poe, is about a man who dreams of a greater life. Mr. Rager, the song by Scott Cudi, has a better meaning than Dreaming, the poem by Edgar Allen Poe, by personification, allusion, and symbolism.
There is a misconception regarding rap music content about how it predominantly focuses on the topics of drugs, sex and money. Various people do not understand that rap music is a valuable method of expressing one’s emotions and thoughts. The lyrics in rap music are able to strongly represent a broader story of someone’s story. Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise is a story of what it was like as an African-American male to grow up in the ghettos. Through his lyrics, Coolio explains the real-life problems of living in Compton, his hometown. His music describes how immense the amount violence inner city violence that occurred and what he had to become in order to fit into that society. The point of this song was to show those who had not experienced what he had gone through some insight. Coolio mentions how his deviant actions have affected his relationship with his mother. He attempts to justify that murder and violence were the only way to survive on the streets he lived in. The song devises numerous associations to the situation of class, socialization and the conflict subculture. In his
There is one universal language: the language of music. Music has a special quality and ability to bridge both social and cultural divides. A proposed theory by Dr. Gray, Founder and Director of National Musical Arts’ BioMusic Program; describes music has been around longer than human-beings have. Music is the one thing human beings from various backgrounds can relate to. Every living creature would agree. Music is heard everywhere not just among humans, but in nature as well, through the twitting of birds, winds blowing, the soft sound of raindrops against a windowpane, the ocean waves moving back and forth and the hum of the ocean rushing in a sea shell. There is no escaping it; music lives in and surrounds us steadily. While there are countless songs which confer social or cultural consciousness, this paper will analyze and address the dynamics of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes”, video. Stylistically, the paper will examine the artist point of view, the unique use of lyrical analysis and sound description in relation to its historical, social, political and/or cultural context. This essay will also trace the lyrical analysis and sound description of song and discuss how the elements (visually, sonically, and lyrically) interplay with the theme of immigration and/or violence.

A race issue that occurs within the rap and hip-hop musical genre is the racial stereotypes associated with the musical form. According to Brandt, and Viki rap music and hip- hop music are known for fomenting crime violence, and the continuing formation of negative perceptions revolving around the African-American race (p.362). Many individuals believe that rap and hip-hop music and the culture that forms it is the particular reason for the degradation of the African-American community and the stereotypes that surround that specific ethnic group. An example is a two thousand and seven song produced by artist Nas entitled the N-word. The particular title of the song sparked major debates within not only the African-American community thus the Caucasian communities as well. Debates included topics such as the significance and worth of freedom of speech compared with the need to take a stand against messages that denigrate African-Americans. This specific label turned into an outrage and came to the point where conservative white individuals stood in front of the record label expressing their feelings. These individuals made a point that it is because artists like Nas that there is an increase in gang and street violence within communities. Rap and hip-hop music only depicts a simple-minded image of black men as sex crazed, criminals, or “gangsters”. As said above, community concerns have arisen over time over the use of the N-word, or the fact that many rappers vocalize about white superiority and privilege. Of course rap music did not develop these specific stereotypes, however these stereotypes are being used; and quite successfully in rap and hip-hop which spreads them and keeps the idea that people of color are lazy, all crimin...
The use of Ebonics in rap lyrics is becoming more and more apparaent in today's society because there are so many more people of all cultures and age groups beginning to listen to rap. More and more of the younger generations today are imitating the style of their favorite rapper; for example, today there are kids all around the world dressing up with baggy clothes, wearing their hats real low, and changing the way they speak so they can sound like their favorite rappers. The way that the use of Ebonics in rap has effected not only the American culture, but cultures all around the world shows just how popular Ebonics has become in today's society.
Throughout American history there has always been some form of verbal acrobatics or jousting involving rhymes within the Afro-American community. Signifying, testifying, shining of the Titanic, the Dozens, school yard rhymes, prison ?jail house? rhymes and double Dutch jump rope rhymes, are some of the names and ways that various forms of raps have manifested. Modern day rap music finds its immediate roots in the toasting and dub talk over elements of reggae music (George, 1998)....

Throughout hip-hop music history, artists have developed methods in which they express true meanings and portray meaningful messages embedded in their work. Some artists being better at it than others, they share personal experiences, teach valuable life lessons, and create a melodious piece of art in just a matter of minutes. On account of the various styles and subgenres in rap music today, these specific factors fall under the category of lyrical rap. Rap music has changed tremendously over the last 20 years, but lyrical rap has stayed true to its purpose. From retired lyrical genius Eminem, to current rappers such as J. Cole, the lyrical rap genre lives on. Many new artists release songs with little significant meaning, and lyrics that

Poe conveys his fixation through his narrators in short stories, whether they kill based on fear, hate, or anxiety. By including death in all his works, he frightens his audience and shows them that death is unavoidable and constantly chases us throughout our lives.
Throughout time, death has been viewed in a negative light. In general, it is an event to be mourned and is seen by some as the end to existence. People do not usually seek death as an answer to their problems. In various pieces of literature, however, suicide is contemplated by the characters as the only solution to the pain and grief that they experience.
