In his article, The Lovely Stones, Hitchens makes the argument that the Parthenon should be restored to its original glory. He uses various forms of argumentative techniques such as pathos, logos, and ethos. However, although he uses all theses of these techniques, his application of them to his argument are ineffective to say the least. The author uses various forms of ethos in order to support his argument that the original Parthenon sculptures should be returned to Greece. In his first paragraph, the author uses a quote from A.W. Lawrence, a famous classicist. A.W. Lawrence states that the Parthenon is “the one building in the world which may be assessed as absolutely right.” Here, the author is using ethos because he is using the credentials and opinions of an expert to express to the reader the importance of this structure. Here the author uses the simple logical argument that if two objects are separate, people should be inclined to bring them back together. He provides an example stating that “If the Mona Lisa had been sawed in two during the Napoleonic Wars and the separated halves had been acquired by different museums… would there not be a general wish to see what they might look like if reunited?” The author wants to persuade the reader to support the idea that the fractured statues within the Parthenon should be brought back together, because logically, when objects are split, there should be an inclination to bring them together. This is the most effective argument of the three presented by the author, but still lacks somewhat in its effectiveness. The author does make a viable and logical argument, but this argument depends too much on too many variables. He does not consider when things should be split and when they should be not. In his example of proposing a noise ordinance, you would, “talk about your deep belief in property rights, but then define those rights in broader terms than your opponent does. The right to enjoy your property may include the right to peace and quiet.”This then leads to the proof where you begin your strong argument and examples, resulting in the refutations of your opponent’s arguments. To end this is our conclusion, where the strongest points should be restated and if needed to help your argument, invoke some emotion. The Parthenon embraces its beauty in human history , however , it imprisons its misuse and abuse in addition. In Christopher Hitchens’s , “The Lovely Stones” , he builds an argument to persuade the audience that the original Parthenon Sculptures should be returned to Greece . Christopher Hitchens uses negative diction , cultural references , and the rhetorical appeal , logos , to strengthen his argument .
When using quotes, the author can show that he has done research because he pulled the quotes from multiple sources. An example of this ethos is on page 32 chapter two, it states “Tolstoy once wrote what fascinated him about war was “its reality” – not the strategies of generals or the maneuvers of troops but the “actual killings”. “He was more interested to know in what way and under the influence of what feelings one soldier kills another”. This is a prime example of ethos because it evokes the emotion of the reader, not only this but it talks about emotion which is in fact ethos. For an example of logos, the reader can look at page 250 paragraph one, the example is that of the death toll of the Union soldiers.

His essay certainly contains ethos; it incorporates quotes, polls, historical facts, and popular opinions. Unfortunately, it is difficult to see the purpose of this information. Samuelson does not make his points clear, waited until almost the last line of the essay to explain his idea, and essentially parrots the words of others. Even the main thesis of the essay, that Americans are changing their views from a work ethic to a more fun ethic, was in fact the idea of Thomas Riehle, a worker at IpsosReid. Essentially, Samuelson has written more of a compilation of information than an essay exploring ideas. As a reader, I finished the essay unsatisfied. Through Samuelson's information my interest was piqued, but there was no follow up, explanation, or conclusion I could draw on to be satisfied. This was disappointing, and proved to me that an though essay can contain numerous amounts of information, without a writer connecting them nothing is

Ethos is the use of one’s title or background in order to speak on an issue that is presented. Hasselstrom is a female poet, essayist and writing teacher who is using experiences in order to debate the issue of carrying a weapon. Hasselstrom does not have the proper ethos in order to speak on this topic because she does not have any credentials that state she is qualified enough to speak on the issue of guns. The most experience Hasselstrom has with a weapon is the fact that she owns one, however she is lacks the credentials to give certifiable proof that other methods besides a gun is the only valid method that could prevent a physical altercation from occuring. In the excerpt, Hasselstrom stated that a pistol is the only way to shift the balance of power which then provided safety. She has no background on if that statement is true nor have any of the knowledge to justify the

The fact in this article is that the writer uses logos and pathos more in the critique. Logos, meaning from the text book is the arrangement of an argument and also evidence that supports the writer’s statement. Pathos is Associated with emotional feelings. Ethos simply means the act of a writer trying to convince his audience. I believe that the writer did not use ethos much in the story.
The unsuccessful use of ethos makes the reader feel like the author’s piece is irrelevant to read. What’s going to make them believe this author has something to say that is actually worth listening to? It goes as far as the process it took for the author to make the article. Little things like the ones mentioned in this analysis: demographics of the subjects, interview styles and experience, which contribute to the process of making her article, could become big things when it comes to the author’s use of ethos, because it’s all about credibility. The process is where ethos is established for the most part and that’s where Anderson made most of her “little” mistakes.

For years on end, countries have been fighting with big museums from other countries for ancient artifacts that belong to the original countries. The argument of whether or not the museums should be able to keep them still remains. It is the right of the country to have their own artifacts. It is imperative for countries to be able showcase their historical artifacts, therefor museums should return them to their rightful owners.
...o understanding and appreciating Greek art is significant, but as seen through the writings of Gazda, Marvin and Ellen, the practice of appreciating Greek sculpture as presented by the conservative historians is of detriment to the writings and perceptions of historians, as well as the general education of the public. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of the abovementioned historians during their times of writings, methodology including Kopienkritik has remained a valued and prevalent approach to judging and analysing of both Greek and Roman sculpture, despite increased criticism. All of these factors serve to undermine the validity of the construct, and show that while the construct may have suited and served the purposes of those who created it, it does nothing to legitimately further proper and rational history of Greek and more specifically, Roman sculpture.
According to the whole article, the author used the ethos at most for these were his real experience. He established powerful credibility. He showed many examples and the events he had experienced which could make the audience know directly with the education situation during that time and believe the ghetto people and the students were really poor. The uses of logos, pathos and ethos were a big success for each of them could let the readers understand the bad situation with the students and ghetto area’s people. From all over to everywhere did he show the savage inequalities existed.
