Everyone has faced moments when they are afraid to speak up, and Melinda is no exception. However, you cannot let fear or anxiety hold you back from speaking out. In Speak, a novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson, we see this laid out in an interesting way—Melinda doesn’t have the courage to speak for most of the novel, and we see the consequences; however, by the end of the novel, she finally gets the courage to speak up. She shows the theme of not fearing to speak up through the relation between Melinda and Andy. Andy is a student went to an end-of-the-summer party where he raped Melinda. Melinda called the cops and even though they did arrive, Andy was not arrested, and now, everyone at school hates her. Since then, she has been afraid
The book Speak by Laurie Anderson is about how Melinda Sordino--- an “outcast” girl overcome the trouble in her life, her growth in mind and how she learned to speak up for herself.
“ Stay Strong, Stand up, Have a voice”- Shawn Johnson. This quote epitomizes this story perfectly. There are characters that demonstrate this lead in literature. In the short story, “The Truth About Sharks” Beth, is introduced as the dynamic character. Beth from The Truth About Sharks by Joan Bauer, wakes up and is in a very lazy, tired and cranky mood. She doesn’t want to do anything her mom asks/wants her to. So, instead she went shopping for new pants. Beth goes to Michelle Gail’s and meets Hannah the sales person. She starts trying things on, Beth leaves her stuff in the changing room and walks over to the sales rack by the elevator and gets falsely accused for stealing the pants she had on. Madge P. Groton took her to her office and calls for backup and Beth is later greeted by Officer Brenneman who takes her to the police station. On their way there Beth asks for a chance to prove herself with a witness she has back at the store. Her witness Hannah who luckily remembers her and defends Beth because she was very polite to her in the morning. Beth stands up for herself and goes back to the store demanding an apology, which she later gets and a really pricey gift card given by the manager on behalf of the problem caused in his store. A study through Beth when you stand up for yourself you get something good out of it.
Norman Bowker was a soldier who embodied the damage of a long term war after it was over. During the war Bowker was a quiet and a humble soldier, and the death of his friend Kiowa brings a huge impact to his life after the war. In the chapter Speaking of Courage, time has past by and Bowker had returned to Iowa. Bowker drives his dad’s Chevrolet around the lake, and realizes he has nowhere to go. He thinks about multiple things as he drives around the lake like thinking about his highschool girlfriend, his friend drowning in the lake, and also thinks about his father where he would bring home medals from the war. As the sun goes down he imagines telling his dad that he did not have the courage to save Kiowa and was imagining that his father
The novel Speak, written by Laurie Halse Anderson is about a girl, who gets raped in the summer before the start of her freshman year in high school and the book follows her as she tries to cope with the depression that comes that kind of violation. This book was turned into a movie; and released early in the early 2000’s and when adapting books to film, a lot of information and details are lost in the process. When comparing Speak the novel and Speak the movie, the noticeable differences are; the character relationships, Melinda’s character, and Andy Evans and Melinda’s dynamic.
For the past few weeks, we have been reading the book Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about a girl named Melinda Sordino, who for the most part refused to speak or interact with others after being raped at a end-of-the-summer party before the start of her freshman year in highschool. Ever since she was raped, she completely changed. However, I think she shows signs of improvement during the second half of the year.
Everyone has had that one moment, or maybe a couple. The moment when their life changes forever, the moments when they know they will never be the same person they were yesterday. These moments are turning points that play a large role in a person’s identity.
She begins talking about her childhood and who raised her until she was three years old. The woman who raised her was Thrupkaew’s “auntie”, a distant relative of the family. The speaker remembers “the thick, straight hair, and how it would come around [her] like a curtain when she bent to pick [her] up” (Thrupkaew). She remembers her soft Thai accent, the way she would cling to her auntie even if she just needed to go to the bathroom. But she also remembers that her auntie would be “beaten and slapped by another member of my family. [She] remembers screaming hysterically and wanting it to stop, as [she] did every single time it happened, for things as minor as…being a little late” (Thrupkaew). She couldn’t bear to see her beloved family member in so much pain, so she fought with the only tool she had: her voice. Instead of ceasing, her auntie was just beaten behind closed doors. It’s so heart-breaking for experiencing this as a little girl, her innocence stolen at such a young age. For those who have close family, how would it make you feel if someone you loved was beaten right in front of you? By sharing her story, Thrupkaew uses emotion to convey her feelings about human
Many soldiers of today know what courage is. Courage is doing what is needed to do, not what absolutely must be done. In Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”, the soldiers were not what one would think of as courageous. The soldiers were courageous in the sense that their courage came from fear of dishonor. The soldiers did what must be done in order to keep their honorable reputation. True courage was not present until the end of the story.
Today, we often see the phrase “Your actions speak louder than your words” to be the solution to our day-to-day problems. Rather than telling someone ‘We should hangout sometime!’, we instead state ‘Hey I’ll pick you up at 7’ and just like magic are problems are resolved. Within Maya Angelou’s “The grandmother” and Hisaye Yamamoto’s “The Brown House” we see just how compelling this phrases is as our two heroines demonstrate the power of our action by keeping silent. Maya Anelgou demonstrates to us her life as a child, living with her grandmother Momma, and her fight against the never-ending struggle of racism within their time. While in the story “The Brown House” we’ll see a family struggle with their father’s gambling problem and just how
Speak, is a novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson, about a girl entering high school, for the first time, with a heavy secret weighting on her. Melinda Sordino begins freshman year at Merryweather High School, being a complete different person. Over the summer, Melinda and her friends went to a senior party, where Melinda ended calling the police. This caused her friends and the people at the party to socially reject her, even though they didn’t knew that before the phone call, Andy Evans raped her. Due to the phone call, Melinda enters high school without friends and having to see Andy Evans everyday. Her only “safe” place in the entire school is art class, where Mr. Freeman is the teacher. Mr. Freeman is the only teacher Melinda doesn’t dislike or avoids, because he listens and understands her, but also shows her the value of honesty.
The concept of standing up for myself had been something I’d put off many years after becoming a bully victim, but it wasn’t until the death of my friend Samuel that the reality of the issue arose.
Most students have to be courageous when they’r stand up for another student that are being mistreated. In Mildred Taylor's book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Stacey has to show courage when faced with discrimination because of his race. Stacey had to show courage when he was making a plan for the bus, and when he was standing up for T.J..
In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, the main character Cassie Logan, a young African-American girl, grows up experiencing racism in the American South. Even though she was only nine, she fought for equality and justice for herself and her family. For example, when she noticed a racial slur in her younger brother’s textbook, she stood up for him against the teacher. She understood that people judged her based on her race, yet she was able to stand up and fight for what
One day, Michelle walks through a hallway. It’s her first day at her new school across the country. No one knows her and she knows no one. Then, she walks through a door in that same hallway into a class full of different looking people. She then realizes it’s her that is different. The teacher introduces Michelle and her classmates stare, quietly whispering to themselves. Embarrassment taking over as her footsteps echo to her new seat. Then, she trips and that’s when her life changed. Every one of her peers started laughing, even the teacher contributed a few chuckles before attempting to break up the never ending laughter. For the rest of the day, they’d look at her and snicker. They even taped a piece of paper to her locker which read “had a nice trip?” Michelle ran home, not wanting to be in school any longer, when, out of nowhere, a foot popped out of the bush beside her. She was so focused on running that she hadn’t had time to stop. She ran right into the foot. She collapsed on the cement. Her knees scraped and bleeding, the boy who had tripped her stood towering above, recording every last bit of her embarrassment. He said that there was no room for people of Michelles race at his school. That she should stay on the floor where she belongs, like the dog she is. The boy had posted the video on social media for all her peers to see. People kept commenting on the video, leaving mean and nasty comments about Michelle that was when the online bullying started. Her classmates would call her names and make up rumors about her. They’d tell her to go back to where she came from. Michelle felt that her first day was the first bad day of many. For the rest of the school year, people had called her dog. The physical harassment wasn’t too bad at first, it started with tripping and pushing her; but as the school year progressed, people started to beat her up, leaving broken bones and black
When we talk about rumors and half-truths we talk about hurt people, broken hearts, lost friends, destroyed relationships …In fact one lie is able enough to ruin a whole life. However, the effect of the tale bearing and rumors takes various ranges and leads to different consequences like in Matt Donaghy’s situation, a 15 years old student at rocky river high school ,was accused of planning a bomb threat to kill everyone in the school , slander caused for him a lot of inconveniences from the investigation and suspension, being betrayed and disappointed of his friends who couldn’t be counted on, who didn’t try to get in touch with him to console him and who seemed for me to be believing that Matt could be involved in such a terrorist act “bombing the school”, he started to feel solitude often besides the pressure of his parents to avoid distorting the family name and their reputation, ending with his father suing the school with an enormous amount of money as an indemnity(compensation) for what had happened to Matt until he tried to commit suicide, thanks to Ursula( who has a very exceptional character, not very active socially , different from the other girls, one of the best athletes in the school) who could stop him at the last minute, and who the rescuer of him, in fact Ursula testified for him, Matt’s experiment made him perceive and discover his real friends, and made him conscious, his story is very probable to occur in the reality. Though, the reality has more complicated, fateful, crucial and deeper situations where slander and rumors can lead to sallow, agonizing and grievous ends for some people as it happened and still happening in a place where human rights is an indefinite and enigmatic term, some minorities were ...
