How Does Idris Affect Roshi

“Promises are like the full moon, if they are not kept at once they diminish day by day.” This quote from a German proverb greatly describes the promise Idris made to Roshi. Idris made a prodigious promise to Roshi, and like many people, he put off that promise until he completely forgot about her. In the realistic fiction book And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, Idris and the verdict he made to break his promise to Roshi not only affected himself, but affected others such as Timur, and of course, Roshi. The choice that Idris made to forget about Roshi greatly affected himself. For example, before the ruling of forgetting about Roshi, he felt very exuberant about the thought that he was going to help Roshi. “Amra smiles at him. He …show more content…

At the beginning of chapter 5, Timur is seen as a stuck up, cocky bastard who cheats on his wife and his taxes. “He knows that Timur cheats on both his wife and his taxes.” (Hosseini 140) “He didn’t like thinking this of his cousin(Timur), who was the closest thing Idris had to a brother, but it seemed to him that Timur wrote his own press kit, and his generosity, Idris suspected, was a calculated piece of an intricately constructed character.” (Hosseini 147) At the beginning of the chapter, it was hard for any reader to like Timur’s character. He sounded terrible and cocky. When the reader hears about Timur later in the chapter though, the outlook of Timur changes. At the very end of chapter 5, Timur does not seem like such a bad person after all. “To the two angels in my life: my mother Amra, and my Kaka Timur. You are my saviors. Sure, Timur may be cocky and self righteous , but he does not break his promises like Idris. And breaking a promise to save a girl’s life is worse than saving her and bragging about it. Due to the decision that Idris made to break his promise to Roshi, Timur was affected; and the way that the reader perceives Timur was …show more content…

Since Roshi loved Idris like a father, it really hurt her when he broke his promise and forgot about her entirely. “In a postscript at the end of the second e-mail, she says that Roshi has become withdrawn since he left, and asks again whether he has spoken to his chief.” (Hosseini 175) When Idris left her life, she was very sad and withdrawn from the world. But, when she got older, she matured and never even thought of Idris. For example, when Roshi signs Idris’s book, she showed no signs of emotion. Instead of autographing his book, she writes two simple sentences in it. “Instead, a clean, diplomatic dismissal. And this note. Don’t worry. You’re not in it.” (Hosseini 181) When Idris read what Roshi wrote in his book to himself, he was appalled. Roshi did not miss Idris at all, not one single bit. Roshi doesn’t care about Idris anymore, the only people whom she cares about now is Timur and Amra. Therefore, Roshi’s life was greatly affected by the decision Idris made to forget about
