“Promises are like the full moon, if they are not kept at once they diminish day by day.” This quote from a German proverb greatly describes the promise Idris made to Roshi. Idris made a prodigious promise to Roshi, and like many people, he put off that promise until he completely forgot about her. In the realistic fiction book And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, Idris and the verdict he made to break his promise to Roshi not only affected himself, but affected others such as Timur, and of course, Roshi. The choice that Idris made to forget about Roshi greatly affected himself. For example, before the ruling of forgetting about Roshi, he felt very exuberant about the thought that he was going to help Roshi. “Amra smiles at him. He …show more content…
At the beginning of chapter 5, Timur is seen as a stuck up, cocky bastard who cheats on his wife and his taxes. “He knows that Timur cheats on both his wife and his taxes.” (Hosseini 140) “He didn’t like thinking this of his cousin(Timur), who was the closest thing Idris had to a brother, but it seemed to him that Timur wrote his own press kit, and his generosity, Idris suspected, was a calculated piece of an intricately constructed character.” (Hosseini 147) At the beginning of the chapter, it was hard for any reader to like Timur’s character. He sounded terrible and cocky. When the reader hears about Timur later in the chapter though, the outlook of Timur changes. At the very end of chapter 5, Timur does not seem like such a bad person after all. “To the two angels in my life: my mother Amra, and my Kaka Timur. You are my saviors. I owe you everything.” (Hosseini 180). After reading this dedication to Amra and Timur from Roshi’s book, any reader would have different thoughts about Timur. Sure, Timur may be cocky and self righteous , but he does not break his promises like Idris. And breaking a promise to save a girl’s life is worse than saving her and bragging about it. Due to the decision that Idris made to break his promise to Roshi, Timur was affected; and the way that the reader perceives Timur was …show more content…
Since Roshi loved Idris like a father, it really hurt her when he broke his promise and forgot about her entirely. “In a postscript at the end of the second e-mail, she says that Roshi has become withdrawn since he left, and asks again whether he has spoken to his chief.” (Hosseini 175) When Idris left her life, she was very sad and withdrawn from the world. But, when she got older, she matured and never even thought of Idris. For example, when Roshi signs Idris’s book, she showed no signs of emotion. Instead of autographing his book, she writes two simple sentences in it. “Instead, a clean, diplomatic dismissal. And this note. Don’t worry. You’re not in it.” (Hosseini 181) When Idris read what Roshi wrote in his book to himself, he was appalled. Roshi did not miss Idris at all, not one single bit. Roshi doesn’t care about Idris anymore, the only people whom she cares about now is Timur and Amra. Therefore, Roshi’s life was greatly affected by the decision Idris made to forget about
He had dedicated so much of himself to the organization, but he wasn’t seeing anything come of it. When the image of himself sold at the auction for a large sum of money, Tiaò broke into tears (Wasteland). Someone spent good money on his portrait, and that alone is enough to increase anyone’s self-worth.
Throughout life, individuals are faced with decisions and obstacles that must be overcome. These decisions and actions are easily influenced by outside forces and motivations and the outcomes of our actions can have a drastic effect on one's destiny. The act of deciding a course of action is not always simple, but it is made even more difficult when we are faced with a time period and a negative outcome if we chose not to continue on our journey. In the short story “Winter’s Bone,” written by Daniel Woodrell, we are taught that throughout life people make choices between what they want to do and what they need to do. Sometimes those choices lead to unfavourable outcomes,
One betrayal that was shown was the betrayal of emotion when Amir was talking to Rahim Khan and finding out that Ali was not Hassan's father. Amir was confused by what he said so Rahim Khan explained by saying ”I think you know who it is”(236) . It was a betrayal of emotion because the connection and bond that they had for each other was gone. Baba told amir that the greatest sin was to

Loyalty allows people to make sacrifices in order to protect the ones that are deat to them. In the book The Chrysalids written by John Wyndham, there are individuals willing to die for one another just to keep each other safe from the society trying to hunt them down.
Maybe she was lectured by her priest or by her parents but she didn’t regret it. Idgie was concerned with the present, not the past or the future. Of course she had her hardship that
Loyalty can be perceived in many different ways. Loyalty may be shown by an individual as repayment, sympathy, or it may just be a part of one’s character and personality. Ultimately, loyalty is an act of faithfulness, reliability, and commitment. The opposite, disloyalty, is an act of dishonesty. In the novel: “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen, the main character, Jacob Jankowski, portrays elements of, both, loyalty and disloyalty. Jacob is deceiving and disloyal in many aspects of this novel; however, once he learns lessons of loyalty from other characters, he embraces loyalty in return – it becomes evident that Jacob’s actions were acts of repayment towards his peers.
I loved you not."(III, i, 118-120) All the promises he had made to her before
While war keeps on dividing the Meekers, it also starts to divide individuals such as Tim, making his inner self erode little bits at a time. He gets torn up inside when he is asked whose side he will take. (Pg.37) He isn't just being asked who he will support in the war, but who he will stick with, his brother who he looks up to, or his father who is the head of the household, and is the person who takes care of him. Throughout the book he still doesn't make this hard decision because after all, he loves both of these people with all his heart and doesn't want to hurt either one
Alis endeavored to keep the conversation light, even though guilt tugged at her conscience. She had not held up her end of the bargain, and even though Daniel had withheld pertinent information from her about Lionel’s apology, she was not angry with him, Daniel cared for Alis and his words and deeds made that clear. He had made a mistake and they would carry on as friends.
Not only to the body of those fighting, but also their minds. Boys struggle within themselves over their memories and following reactions. Battles ruin people's lives forever and some never live past childhood. Lives are lost endlessly with no hope of returning. Ishmael was one of those lucky ones to return from war. He fought with all his might to get what he lost. He lived because of hope expelled off of others. Though the process was hard, he learned that it is possible to be saved through only hope and love. “It was not easy being a soldier, but we just had to do it. I have been rehabilitated now, so don’t be afraid of me. I am not a soldier anymore; I am a child” (199). Ishmael won the fight with his own mind and is living once again. A real and true
Change causes people to make important decisions. In A Separate Peace, John Knowles describes a one-sided jealousy that exists between two best friends. Gene is envious of Finny’s innate athletic ability and decides that he is his rival. One day, as they were jumping off a tree for fun, Gene jounced the tree limb causing Finny to fall. This action that Gene took shows how he lost his purity. Often times when people grow up and experience change they make important decisions, and as a result, they lose their innocence.
Guilt can impact a person’s life and their choices in the future. Although Amir and his beloved wife Soraya have what seems to be a perfect life, there are many things that lack in their relationship. Amir is afraid to tell Soraya about his past, so he never told her; this causes him to begin his marriage with guilt and distrust, affecting his relationship with her. In the beginning of their relationship, Soraya told him everything about her past- lea...
In the novel, Snow Falling on Cedars, by David Guterson, Ishmael Chambers had been in love with Hatsue Imada but she did not feel the same way. When she moved to the Japanese internment camps and wrote a letter breaking up with him, it felt like a tragedy. Now Ishmael stood with evidence that could free Kabuo Miyamoto, a Japanese man on trial for murder, but did not know what to do with it. “He read her letter another time and understood that she once admired him, there was something in him she was grateful for even if she could not love him. … he reached into his pocket and unfolded the notes Philip Milholland had written on September 16, and Ishmael explained what the shorthand meant and why he had come at ten-thirty in the night to speak to her after all these years” (Guterson 442-444). After rereading Hatsue’s letter to him years later, he realized that although she did not love him, she respected him. He learned from this that he could not let his anger get in the way of an innocent man, even if he was Japanese, being freed for a murder he did not commit. That was why he came to Hatsue’s house at ten-thirty at night; to tell her that. Personal emotions often get in the way of one doing what is truly right. When one is frustrated or upset about something, she is unlikely to think as she normally would leading to quick decisions made with no thought. These decisions are typically regretted, but one learns from this mistake that
To conclude, Amir acts show that sometimes the easiest way of a situation is to betray someone even if it is someone close to you. Amir’s acts of betrayal that he had done are not helping Hassen and turning his back way during his time of need, blaming others for what he had done, and to betray his own father’s trust and respect by committing theft, which is his father’s worst sin. During times of needs betraying someone may be easiest way out of a situation, but it does not always have the effects you had hoped for.
