In order to explore that with the same scrutiny as Dark Romanticism did to society, a look into the life and works of its two most prolific writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and how their contributions affected society is necessary. An auspicious start would be Edgar Allan Poe, whose writings and person being as much gothic as they are misunderstood There is a certain romantic quality to loss such as Poe experienced. By the time Poe was twenty-six, he had lost both parents, was estranged from his foster father, and without a career until his employment at The Southern Literary Messenger (Paddock et al., “Poe, Edgar Allan”; Kennedy 68). However, despite these circumstances, Poe was very much a product of his time. Andrew Jackson’s presidency provided the basis on how to “appeal to the masses”, and the “communication revolution” saw the rise of the publishing industry and a hunger for information (Kennedy 65-66). Poe’s awareness of this exists in a letter to Thomas W. White, proprietor of The Southern Literary Messenger, after complaints were made about Poe’s Berenice (Kennedy 68-69). Essentially, this movement was based upon the ideals of the “sixth sense,” nature, and non-conformity, as well as individualism, intuition, idealism, imagination, and inspiration. A few of the works and writings featured in the transcendental unit include Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, The Beatification of Chris McCandless: From Thieving Poacher into Saint by Craig Medred, and Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson. During the American Renaissance, writers were put into one of two categories. The categories were the Dark Romantics and the Transcendentalists. Developed in the late 1820s, Transcendentalism was a philosophical, literary, and intellectual movement that emphasized the individual and living a simple life. It invited people to transcend knowledge that merely existed in reason and logic into knowledge that truly lies within imagination, freedom, intuition, and self-reliance. Interestingly enough, Transcendentalism itself was able to transcend time, as transcendentalist ideas still live in our culture in the works of the 20th century poets Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, and Wallace Stevens. This philosophy is not only communicated through literature itself, but it’s also manifested and celebrated in contemporary films such as “Cast Away” and “Pursuit of Happyness”. In this essay, we shall examine two of the most eminent tenets of this philosophy in “Cast Away”: stressing a closer relationship to nature as one, and celebrating emotions and imagination as another.
Romantic literature, as Kathy Prendergast further claims, highlighted things like splendor, greatness, vividness, expressiveness, intense feelings of passion, and stunning beauty. The Romantic literary genre favored “parts” over “whole” and “content” over “form”. The writer argues that though both the Romantic literary genre and the Gothic art mode were medieval in nature, they came to clash with what was called classical conventions. That’s why, preoccupations with such things as the supernatural, the awful, the dreadful, the repulsive and the grotesque were the exclusive focus of the nineteenth century Gothic novel. While some critics perceived the Gothic as a sub-genre of Romanticism, some others saw it as a genre in its own right (Prendergast).
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writings have been read for many years, and many of his books have been on the required reading lists in the school curricula. His works convey themes of psychology and human nature through his crafty use of allegory and symbolism. These were essential tools in addressing topics that were too radical to be publicly addressed in the nineteenth century (Magill 1). He used these techniques to criticize some part of society, which is evident in his use of satire in the religious world (Hilton 1). Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writings impacted his contemporary society, despite the fact that his criticism and ideas weren’t widely popular and accepted.
During the nineteenth century, literary writers were encouraged in transcendentalism. Their main focus was on capturing the spirituality in nature. For example, authors such as Henry Thoreau and Ralph Emerson were dominating the world of poetry and prose with their tales of nature. From Thoreau's' journey through the Maine Woods to Emerson's Nature, the transcendental ere, was in the main stream. Yet, not all of the nineteenth century writers shared this same viewpoint. As a matter of fact, one writer emerging, who proved to be just as prominent, had a viewpoint in direct opposition of his contemporaries. The great Edgar Allen Poe, though born during the same period and encountered the same influences, would emerge as a different writer. "Those others", Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, Whittier and Holmes, "turned toward Wordsworth while Poe, took Coleridge as his loadstar in his search for a consistent theory of art" (Perkins 1236).
Throughout the years, Gothic literature has developed to be a mirror representation of what the beliefs and thoughts of the time were. The Gothic has a tendency to express beliefs towards the socioeconomic, political and religious situations and grievances of the time. The timeless relevance of his work, and its merciless scrutiny of the human condition, solidifies its place in history and its position of high admiration. In conclusion, the extraordinary-fleeting-tragic life of Edgar Allan Poe will forever remain on record as the tale of an orphan, a gentleman, a soldier, and one of the most prominent literary figures in American history.

Through thematic conventions of the Gothic genre, literary devices and his own auteur, Edgar Allan Poe’s texts are considered sublime examples of Gothic fiction. The Gothic genre within Poe’s work such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, and The Raven, arouse the pervasive nature of the dark side of individualism and the resulting encroachment of insanity. Gothic tales are dominated by fear and terror and explore the themes of death and decay. The Gothic crosses boundaries into the realm of the unknown, arousing extremes of emotion through the catalyst of disassociation and subversion of presence. He uses intrigue vocabulary, repetition, and imagery to better capture the reader’s attention and place them in the story. Edgar Allan Poe’s style is dark, and his is mysterious style of writing appeals to emotion and drama. What might be Poe’s greatest fictitious stories are gothic tend to have the same recurring theme of either death, lost love, or both. His choice of word draws the reader in to engage them to understand the author’s message more clearly. Authors who have a vague short lexicon tend to not engage the reader as much.

In the 1840’s, Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of several founding members at Brook Farm, a community of transcendentalists that sought to live connected with nature and God.
