Corruption in The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel based on Nick Carraway’s subjective memory of Jay Gatsby and the people living in New York. The novel describes how different people are affected by their setting. Characters living in the East lived lives that lead to destruction and corruption, while those raised in the Midwest lived more innocent lives. Corruption is present around every corner in the East. Tom and Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker, Myrtle Wilson, and Meyers Wolfsheim all lead corrupt, dishonest lives while they manage to convince those around them that they live perfect and successful lives. Tom and Daisy Buchanan appear to be a very happy family with their daughter, but unbeknownst to most, Tom Buchanan is seeing Myrtle Wilson behind Daisy’s back. Nick is …show more content…
one of the few people aware of the scandal.
He believes “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy -- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made” (Fitzgerald 188). Tom makes himself out to be very masculine, arrogant, aggressive, and ostentatious. He wants everyone to know how strong and well-off he is. Daisy is very careless and always seems to want something that is out of reach. She believes naivety is a blessing. When she speaks to Nick about her daughter, she explains, “...I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool -- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (Fitzgerald 21). Their desperate pursuit of happiness led to their imminent downfall. Jordan Baker is seen as an incredible athlete by the public. Her desperate
need to be successful brought her to cheat and be caught in an amateur golf tournament. Jay Gatsby was born in the Midwest, but his time spent in the East led him to corruption as he sought wealth in order to gain Daisy’s love. He became an “innocent bootlegger” (Hays). His work in the drugstore business allowed him to become wealthy and famous, but his glamorous lifestyle never helped him to grab Daisy’s attention. The Midwest developed more innocent and honest characters such as Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. Nick is the only character that portrays himself as an honest man with strong morals. “Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known” (Fitzgerald 64). He is aware of the dishonesty in Tom and Daisy’s relationship and Jordan’s athletic career, but sits idly by, not fully participating in their endeavors. Jay Gatsby is a simple man from North Dakota who embodies the American Dream. He went from rags to riches after following his mentor, Dan Cody. Gatsby fell for a sweet Louisiana girl named Daisy when he was fighting in the war, but time separated them. Gatsby becomes a naive idealist as he believes Daisy will leave Tom for him and the two of them can go back to living like they did before they went their separate ways. Nick attempts to remind him that one can’t repeat the past to which Gatsby replies, “Can’t repeat the past?... Why of course you can” (Fitzgerald 116). The East leads people down a path of destruction harming themselves and the people around them. Everyone is so obsessed with having the “perfect” life, that they will do anything to obtain it even if they aren’t truly happy. Nick and Gatsby came from the Midwest to the East and experience the corruption first-hand, but Nick reminds the reader that “Gatsby turned out alright in the end” (Fitzgerald 6).
Daisy's greed can best be seen in her choice of a husband, and in the circumstances
The message of numerous literature novels are connected to the context of the time and can enlighten readers to understand the meaning. This is true of the novel, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and first published in 1926. It highlights a materialistic and consumerist society where social and moral values were slowly decaying. Portrayed through the eyes of the narrator, Nick Carraway, itillustrated the world , the people surrounding him and their values; starting with Daisy and Tom Buchanan and the infamous Jay Gatsby, a man chasing after his first love.
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and is based throughout the ‘roaring 20’s’. Throughout the novel there are affairs and corruption, proving life lessons that the past cannot be repeated. Fitzgerald uses many forms of symbolism throughout the text some of these include; colours, the eyes of T.J Eckleburg, clocks and the East and West Eggs. The Great Gatsby is a story of love, dreams and choices witnessed by a narrator against the ridiculous wealth of the 1920’s.
The Great Gatsby is a well written and exemplary novel of the Jazz age, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald desired writing his books about the roaring twenties and would explain what happened during that time frame. The majority of the characters in The Great Gatsby cared more about money, power, and having a good time then the people in their lives. This lack of caring for others resulted in the hardships the characters faced. Especially, Jay Gatsby was one of these cruel characters.
F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby, introduces one of the main characters Jay Gatsby. The setting of this novel is the big picture of the roaring twenties. Gatsby surrounds himself with expensive belongings and wealthy people. He considers himself as new money, which is the West Egg, and lives his life this way for one desire Daisy Buchanan, whom is the love he lost five years earlier. Jay Gatsby is unique from others due to his childhood and growing up poor, his hopeless love for Daisy, and his kindness towards others.
F. Scott Fitzgerald is well known for being an excellent writer, for expertly describing the Jazz Age, and for having a drinking problem. However, he is not so well known for creating deep and intriguing characters. In The Great Gatsby, the majority of the characters remain one-dimensional and unchanging throughout the novel. They are simply known from the viewpoint of Nick Carraway, the participating narrator. Some insight is given into characters in the form of their dialogue with Nick, however, they never really become deep characters that are 'known' and can be identified with. While all of the participants in the novel aren't completely flat, most of the main characters are simply stereotypes of 1920's people from the southern, western, and eastern parts of America.
“The great Gatsby” is an inspiring novel written by the famous American author Scott Fitzgerald. The novel was published in 1925. It is regarded as Scott’s supreme achievement and also as a masterwork in American literature, and it’s entirely justified.
The Great Gatsby a, novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, follows a cast of characters abiding in the town of East and West Egg on affluent Long Island in the summer of 1922. Each of the characters, while part of the same story line, have different priorities and agendas, each character working towards achieving what they think would benefit them the most. As The Great Gatsby’s plot thickens the characters constantly show their discontent of the American Dream that they are living, always expressing their greed for more, three particular offenders of this deadly sin are Tom, Daisy and Gatsby himself. The characters motives stem from a mixture of boredom, a need and longing for the american dream, and simple selfish human desire.
Undoubtedly, Tom and Daisy Buchanan exceedingly demonstrate the wealthy class's lack of integrity. Their lives are filled with material comforts and luxuries and completely empty of true purpose. Daisy's lament is especially indicative of this:
The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald relates the story of the mysterious Jay Gatsby through the eyes of an idealistic man that moves in next door to the eccentric millionaire. Nick Carraway comes to the East Coast with dreams of wealth, high society, and success on his mind. It is not long before Gatsby becomes one of his closest friends, who offers him the very lifestyle and status that Nick came looking for. As the story unfolds, it is easy to see that the focus on Jay Gatsby creates a false sense of what the story truly is. The Great Gatsby is not the tragic tale of James Gatz (Jay Gatsby), but rather the coming of age story of Nick Carraway.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, “The Great Gatsby”, is one of the few novels he wrote in 1925. The novel takes place during the 1920’s following the 1st World War. It is written about a young man named Nick, from the east he moved to the west to learn about the bond business. He ends up moving next to a mysterious man named Gatsby who ends up giving him the lesion of his life.
When Nick visits Daisy she tells him the story of how her daughter was born, “It’ll show you how I’ve gotten to feel about––things. Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling.” By leaving Daisy behind at a time when she most needs him, Tom loses his value of companionship with Daisy. He no longer fits the three criteria that Daisy feels she needs in a man. Daisy knows that Tom no longer loves her and is having an affair with another woman, but despite all of this, Daisy has no intention of leaving him (20). This is because Tom, despite no longer fulfilling her emotionally, is still better for her financially and socially than if she left him to live alone. If Daisy wants to stay in her class, she has no option other than to stay with Tom. When Daisy finally sees Gatsby again, she suddenly has another option besides staying with Tom. Daisy knows that Gatsby has true feelings of love towards her, but leaving Tom would prove to be risky as it could tarnish her reputation and by extension her social stability. Daisy is now struggling between taking a risk for love and maintaining a safe, stable life she is ultimately unhappy

In its time, The Great Gatsby is considered to be a literary classic, and has been a contender for the title “ Great American Novel.” Fitzgerald died at
Nick is astonished at this information. He finds it hard to believe that Tom, with a beautiful wife and child, would be having an affair with some woman in the city. Miss Baker thinks “everybody knew” about the affair, yet Daisy is still with Tom. Being too ignorant to make herself believe it’s true, Daisy is willing to stay in the marriage, even when she is presented with an opportunity from Gatsby to escape. Daisy is willing to stay with Tom just because he has “old money,” and that shows how important it is to her. Everyone else’s morals are just as bad as Tom’s because they know about what’s going on and know that it’s wrong, but they don’t say anything about it. Later in the story, when Wilson is looking for the driver of the yellow car that killed Myrtle, he also suspects that person of having an affair with...
