From the time when they were born in this world until they dies, many people struggle with the question of who are they. Some considers the identity of one person will not change in his or her life, but actually everyone changes himself or herself during different time and in various situations. In The Great Gatsby, this is not only a love story, but also a tragedy. Jay Gatsby tries to convince Daisy, who is the women he still loves, to leave with him, but she already married Thomas Buchanan. Also, Daisy refused to leave her husband, and leave this city with Jay Gatsby because she did not want to give up her wealthy life. himself. In the book, The Great Gatsby and the movie, Forrest Gump, they think themselves in similar but different ways. Although both Jay Gatsby and Forrest Gump trust their relationship with lover and friends, Forest Gump thinks that he is a very straightforward person, while Jay Gatsby defines himself as a person, who always considers others’ feelings. Jay Gatsby likes to use an unobjectionable way to get closer to Daisy. They employed diverse ways to show their emotions as a result of their different identity. Jay Gatsby chases Daisy by employing an indirect way because he thought love is silent to pay.
After he met Daisy and own her again, he told her why he bought a huge house just because he said that he could see “a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock ” (Fitzgerald, 111). He felt happy when he sees the green light on the other side. Even though he has done hard work like holding extravagant parties, and he hoped that it would be really attractive to Daisy, Daisy was not aware of these. He was not direct, and he wanted Daisy to feel his love, and understood him without telling her. In the book, the author describes the thoughts of Jay Gatsby: “He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say ‘I never loved you’ ” (Fitzgerald 109). Although he was anxious and worried, he still waited for Daisy to decide by herself. The way he uses is not only about love, but also about friendship. He lets Jordan ask “if you’ll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over” (Fitzgerald, 49). Nick is stocked because this is just a small demand. However, in the movie, Forrest Gump uses a direct way, which is using language and doing actions. When he began to think about the relationship between him and Jenny, he told to Jenny, “I don’t know why I love you. But I do” (Forrest). They all have strong feelings and emotions, which they want to express, but they use different method. Gatsby cares about others’ feelings because he is …show more content…
careful, but Forrest Gump just says what he wants to say and do what he wants to do because he is direct and dull. Jay Gatsby thinks showing his love is becoming what Daisy likes and give what she wants like parties and money.
One time, after parties, Jay Gatsby told Nick, “she did not like it.”(Fitzgerald, 68) Every time, when Jay Gatsby would like to reach his goal, he thought about how other people would feel about it. Moreover, he felt that her voice is full of money. When he deals with everything related to Daisy, he is careful and emotional. However, Jay Gatsby realized what Daisy wants when he guessed the reason why she decided to marry Thomas Buchanan although she received his letter. That is power of money, and she loves the grand house, money, and rich life. Jay Gatsby tried to get her attention by displaying what he has in his house. During the first time, he brought her to his luxuriant house, and showed off what he has. That is the way that Forrest Gump shows his love is never giving up. When Forrest Gump met Jenny after becoming a soldier, Jenny asked him, “why are you so good to me?” (Forrest). Forrest Gump answered, “you’re my girl!” (Forrest). When she left him over and over again, he did not complain, but he waited her. Also, he promised, “I would never hurt you.” This is what he thinks about love, which is protection and firm determination. He wants to trust Jenny, although she leaves him again and again. Therefore, we could analyze the identity of two characters. When they both have a lover, Jay Gatsby changes his identity, but Forrest Gump tries to be himself. They
both try to catch their girl although other people think that is not rational and question them. When Forrest Gump and Jay Gatsby are with their friends, they defined themselves different roles, so they hold different purpose and different opinions. Forrest Gump regards his friend as part of his life, and even more important than his own life. In the war, he tried to save Bubba, who is his best friend. Someone shot him, and bombs exploded everywhere. He was not afraid of these, but he was “afraid of losing Bubba” (Forrest), so he chose to return to battlefield. He went back again and again, and said, “I gotta find Bubba” (Forrest), when Lieutenant Dan told him that was too dangerous, do no return, and do not save him. However, for Jay Gatsby, he loves Daisy than anything else in this world, which is totally different from the attitude of Forrest Gump. He is dedicated person, who is willing to give everything to Daisy. When the first time he met Nick, he plans that it is just a way to get a little closer to Daisy. Although he wants to take advantages from Nick, he still said to Nick, “I don’t want to put you to any trouble”(Fitzgerald, 50). Persistence of Jay Gatsby eventually moved Nick, so Nick is delighted to help him and, finally, warn him. When Nick Carraway asked what kind of person Jay Gatsby is, his friend told Nick “there's the kind of man you'd like to take home and introduce to your mother and sister” (Fitzgerald 72). We could see Jay Gatsby was a sincere and polite friend, and he was not willing to make troubles. In this comparison, we can see they both put a high value on their friendship, but they treat friends differently and put them in different positions and levels in their hearts. Forrest Gump thought friendship and love are all precious, while Jay Gatsby thought love is prior. Though the analysis of both characters, they both treat their relationship with others very seriously, but there are slightly differences between the weigh of love and friendship in their heart. Forrest Gump treats love and friendship equally, and he directly shows his feelings and emotions to his lover and friends. However, clearly, Jay Gatsby thinks love is the most important emotion and an indispensible part of his life, and he could give up his money, and everything for it. In another view, we can describe that the identity of a person changes when he or she faces to different people and situations from various perspective of relationships. The way which Jay Gatsby uses will not make people feel upset or feel that is impolite, but Forrest Gump likes to tell what he is thinking without thinking about other people’s feeling. Those are the essential differences between Jay Gatsby and Forrest Gump.
Nothing is more important, to most people, than friendships and family, thus, by breaking those bonds, it draws an emotional response from the readers. Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan had a relationship before he went off to fight in the war. When he returned home, he finds her with Tom Buchanan, which seems to make him jealous since he still has feelings for Daisy. He wanted Daisy “to go to Tom and say: ‘I never loved you” (Fitzgerald 118) Gatsby eventually tells Tom that his “wife doesn’t love [him]” and that she only loves Gatsby (Fitzgerald 121). But the unpleasant truth is that Daisy never loved anyone, but she loved something: money. Daisy “wanted her life shaped and the decision made by some force of of money, of unquestionable practicality” (Fitzgerald 161). The Roaring Twenties were a time where economic growth swept the nation and Daisy was looking to capitalize on that opportunity. Her greed for material goods put her in a bind between two wealthy men, yet they are still foolish enough to believe that she loved them. Jay Gatsby is a man who has no relationships other than one with Nick Caraway, so he is trying to use his wealth to lure in a greedy individual to have love mend his
“’Did you see any trouble on the road?’ he asked after a minute. ‘Yes.’ He hesitated. ‘Was she killed?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘I thought so; I told Daisy I thought so. It’s better that the shock should all come at once. She stood it pretty well.’ He spoke as if Daisy’s reaction was the only thing that mattered.” Gatsby’s hesitation before asking “Was she killed” means he has bad memories from mentioning murder, especially since he was involved in one. The damage in reputation that this kill could possibly result in is enough to hurt Gatsby, and his achievements will have become worthless. During the part where Gatsby claims that he “thought so; I told Daisy I thought so. It’s better that the shock should all come at once. She stood it pretty well,” Gatsby
They were in love from the beginning. Unfortunately, Daisy believed that "rich girls don't marry poor boys." From that moment on, Jay Gatz wanted one thing; to get rich so he could show Daisy that a poor boy could get rich. This obsession ate up the real man inside. Jay Gatz became Jay Gatsby. This new man wanted to become the American Dream at an early age.
In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy Buchanan is unthinking and self-centered. Daisy is unthinking because when she meets Nick for the first time after the war; the first thing she says is “I’m p-paralyzed with happiness” (8) which is really unbecoming for a social butterfly like her. Moreover, she stutters while saying the word “paralyzed” which could imply that she says this without really thinking, because this is not the typical greeting one would say to their cousin, even after a long time. Also, since Daisy is pretty high on the social ladder, she expects people to laugh at her terrible jokes because she laughs after saying she is “paralyzed with happiness” even though Nick does not, illustrating her inconsiderate
The Great Gatsby is a novel about a love between a man and a woman who desire to be together, but have trouble along the way when trying to achieve the love they wish to share. The story takes place during the roaring twenties, in the summer of 1922. Although events happen over the course of just a course of a few months, the memories will forever resonate with those who experienced them, even after they are long gone.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald conveys how Jay Gatsby’s ambition is the root of his success and death. When Gatsby, a man of humble beginnings, meets Daisy, her wealth and high status allures him. They fall in love, but due to Gatsby’s low financial and social position, Daisy feels insecure and leaves him. Gatsby’s optimism and obsession to win Daisy prompts the ambition that ultimately drives him to his noble yet tragic ending.
In addition, Daisy shows her selfishness when she has an affair with Gatsby. Daisy rekindles her romance with Gatsby, and does not seem to care who it might affect. The affair will hurt Tom, her daughter, Gatsby, and Nick when it ends badly. Daisy only thinks about herself, and what will make her the most happy in that moment. Daisy’s money allows her to have anything she wants, and at the moment she wants Gatsby. She does not think that the affair will leave Tom angry and hurt when he finds out. Daisy does not think what negative effect this affair may have on her daughter because it puts stress on their family. The affair leads to Gatsby getting his heart broken, and eventually dying. The affair also leaves Nick emotionally damaged, and angry.
People will always be attached to something or someone from their past. The saying of “time will heal” is true, however; there will always be a certain reminder haunting your present. In the novel of “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author focuses mainly on the effects that the relationship between Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby caused on the rest of the characters. The main idea is how Gatsby is attached or obsessed with his past and does not learn how to let go. Moreover, the past can affect both negatively and positively- we can learn from our mistakes and Jay Gatsby is an example.
When people hear the words “romantic hero,” they imagine one of those fake characters from cheesy love stories, holding roses while kneeling below the heroine`s balcony. Gatsby is no better than those fake and desperate heroes because his love is untrue and obsessive. James Gatz, who is also known as Jay Gatsby, is a poor young man who acquires wealth for the purpose of gaining the love of a rich girl named Daisy. Gatsby lives and breathes for Daisy, the “nice” girl he loves, even though she is married to Tom Buchanan. Gatsby`s love may sound dedicated, but it is more obsessive because he lives in his dreams and will literally do anything to win Daisy`s heart. In Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby is not portrayed as being a romantic hero due to his attempts in trying to be someone he is not by faking his identity, by his selfish acts in desperation for Daisy`s love, and his fixation with wealth, proving that love is not the same as obsession.
During Gatsby’s early adulthood, he joined the army (where he first met Daisy). He initially loved her because of her extraordinary house and because many other men had already loved her. One evening in October, Gatsby fell in love with Daisy Fay, and in turn she fell in love with Gatsby. “[Daisy] was the first ‘nice’ girl that he had ever known” (155). Their love was uneasy at first but this uneasiness was lifted when he and Daisy fell in love, and he found that “she thought [he] knew a lot because [he] knew different things from her” (157). While their month of love was physically ended when Gatsby went abroad, their emotional love was not and Daisy, in her artificial world, could not understand why Gatsby could not come home; she wanted her love to be with her, she needed some assurance that she was doing the right thing. It was not long however, before Daisy fell in love with a wealthy, former All-American college football player named Tom Buchanan. Gatsby’s heart was br...
Jay Gatsby believes that wealth and power can lead to love and happiness. He spends his entire life trying to create himself and change his past so that he can rekindle his love affair with the love of his life Daisy Buchanan. The two were young lovers, unable to be together because of very different social statuses. After Gatsby learns that he cannot be with Daisy because of this, he spends the rest of his life attempting to acquire wealth and power.
Her identity was pure, innocent, young and beautiful. At first, she just wanted to have a pure feeling with Gatsby, but when Gatsby went to the front, she could not stand the loneliness and the family persuasion, and she chose to marry Tom. When she chose to marry Tom and abandon Gatsby, her new identity increased material and selfishness. Her identity as a wealthy lady remains, but her purity is long gone. However, Gatsby was not aware of it. Another identity of daisy is a vain woman. In a society badly affected by consumerism, she chose to drift with the tide. She loves all luxuries, but all of this is entirely dependent on Tom. So although Tom had all kinds of romantic affairs,
The Great Gatsby presents the main character Jay Gatsby, as a poor man who is in love with his best friends cousin, Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby was in love with Daisy, his first real love. He was impressed with what she represented, great comfort with extravagant living. Gatsby knew he was not good enough for her, but he was deeply in love. “For a moment a phrase tried to take shape in my mouth and my lips parted like a dumb man’s”(Fitzgerald 107). Gatsby could not think of the right words to say. Daisy was too perfect beyond anything he was able to think of. Soon Gatsby and Daisy went their separate ways. Jay Gatsby went into the war while telling Daisy to find someone better for her, someone that will be able to keep her happy and provide for her. Gatsby and Daisy loved one another, but he had to do what was best for her. Gatsby knew the two might not meet again, but if they did, he wanted things to be the same. “I 'm going to fix everything just the way it was before”(Fitzgerald 106). He wanted Daisy to fall in love with him all over again. Unsure if Daisy would ever see Gatsby again, she got married while he was away. The two were still hugely in love with one another, but had to go separate ways in their
In “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy struggles between her desire to be with someone she truly loves and her rational to be with someone who will give her social and financial stability. Ultimately, Daisy chooses Tom over Gatsby as he is the safer option once Gatsby is revealed to be untruthful, showing that she is predominately interested in a steady life.
In the beginning, Gatsby was a poor army boy who fell in love with a rich girl named Daisy. Knowing from their different circumstances, he could not marry her. So Gatsby left to accumulate a lot of money. Daisy, not being able to wait for Gatsby, marries a rich man named Tom. Tom believes that it is okay for a man to be unfaithful but it is not okay for the woman to be. This caused a lot of conflict in their marriage and caused Daisy to be very unhappy. Gatsby’s dream is to be with Daisy, and since he has accumulated a lot of money, he had his mind set on getting her back. Throughout the novel, Gatsby shows his need to attain The American Dream of love and shows his determination to achieve it. You can tell that Gatsby has a clear vision of what he wants when Nick says, “..he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I gla...
