How exactly far would a parent go to keep their children safe and protect them from the bad in the outside world? In the novel A Time to Kill, by John Grisham, an african american man, Carl Lee, takes matters into his own hands in order to protect his very young daughter, Tonya. Carl Lee has murdered the men that had messed with his daughter and is now on trial due to livid actions. For parents in a situation like this, they will never feel the full justice needed. Can matters take a wrong turn or will they look up for the justice needed for the family? Carl Lee did what he had to do to protect his daughter and even the rest of his family, I believe that he deserves justice for his actions even though he could have handled it a whole lot better. The two men, Billy Ray Cobb and Willard raped and tortured Carl Lee’s daughter, Tonya, and left her to die. Carl Lee didn’t think that justice would be served to the two men that hurt his little girl because they were white and he and his family were black so he put justice in his own hands. Fear and anger rose above him and he took a military grade weapon from the Vietnam War and Carl Lee Hailey gunned down those two men. As written on page 91, “When Cobb reached the second step from the floor, and willard was three steps behind, and Looney was …show more content…
one step off the landing, the small, dirty, neglected, unnoticed door to the janitor’s closet burst open and Mr.
Carl Lee Hailey sprang from the darkness with an M-16. At point-blank range he opened fire.” His
family and the rest of his community were proud of him for taking action and protecting his family. Written on page 94, “The front door opened slowly and the Hailey family emerged. Carl Lee walked to the edge of the porch with Tonya in his arms, The children had tried to understand. Their daddy had tried to explain to them what he had just done, and why. They could not comprehend why he had to be arrested and taken to jail.” Carl Lee’s family, sad and agitated at the actions of their father, was proud of him for handling business the way it should have been handled. Carl Lee got revenge on the men who hurt his his daughter. He took serious measures so that the men could not hurt anyone else ever again. Even though some may say that the way Carl Lee handled business may have been too drastic but he did what he had to in order to keep his family safe. No one deserves to be raped and tortured like she was, and they sure enough don’t deserve to see them out and about, free as ever. Carl Lee did what he had to do to keep his family safe and he got the justice that he deserved.
The hypocrisy and double standard that allowed whites to bring harm to blacks without fear of any repercussions had existed for years before the murder Tyson wrote about occurred in May of 1970 (Tyson 2004, 1). Lynching of black men was common place in the south as Billie Holiday sang her song “Strange Fruit” and the eyes of justice looked the other way. On the other side of the coin, justice was brought swiftly to those blacks who stepped out of line and brought harm to the white race. Take for instance Nate Turner, the slave who led a rebellion against whites. Even the Teel’s brought their own form of justice to Henry Marrow because he “said something” to one of their white wives (1).

... the defendants had to deal with a higher human authority, the judge and jury of their area. In To Kill A Mockingbird Tom Robinson had to deal with an alleged rape, and no matter what the evidence said, or how hard his lawyer worked, he was convicted and later died. Tom was falsely accused, and his death was untimely and could have been avoided. But he accepted his fate calmly, as if he knew no matter what he would be convicted. The defendant in A Time To Kill, Carl Lee was accused of murder of the two men who raped his daughter. Carl was found not guilty, even though he did kill those men, and later on in life will have to deal with his actions. Both men had to deal with what the court brought against them, and they both did. Carl and Tom dealt with multiple issues, but the prejudices of their race, and the time they were tried ultimately determined their fates.
While the case listed above was an unfortunate event, imagine the children who do not exhibit such harsh behavior and still get overlooked? Many children who are exposed to violent behavior in the household tend to become numb and emotionally unavailable (Weithorn, Behrman, 1999). They do not have to show anger or be physically violent, some children seem to become silent, depress and possibly distance themselves from others. I had the privilege of interviewing a professional in the education field. Shayna Bennett- Givner is the director for Teenie’s Tot Daycare located in Pittsburgh. I wanted to get a first-hand insight on behavioral issues and how she has to deal with them with in her business.
During the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861-1865, over 620,000 accounted soldiers were killed. Known as the "the first modern war", historians generally agree that the reason for this was because this was a time of transition for the military. Armies and Navies were still using tactics where they would gather large forces of firepower to bear on the enemy. At the same time, weapons were being developed which were accurate and lethal well beyond any arms of the earlier conflicts. As a result of these two conditions many more casualties were sustained. Add to that the lack of medical knowledge of disease and infection and the numbers truly began to grow. This paper is an overview of the types of weaponry that was used during this time.
On February 18 the SCLC leader James Orange was arrested in Perry County. That evening hundreds of blacks gathered and marched on the jail. On the way they were attacked. Among the victims of the attacks were Jimmey Lee and his mother. Lee was beaten and then shot in the stomach, later dying in the hospital. At a large memorial service for Lee, a march from Selma to Montgomery was announced that would take place on March 7th. The marchers set off for Montgomery, but as they crossed the Pettus Bridge, they were attacked by troopers. As the New York Times reported the next day: "The first 10 or 20 Negroes were swept to the ground, screaming, arms and legs flying, and packs and bags went skittering across the grassy divider strip and onto the pavement on both sides.
I believe that Emmett Till’s death was not justified. However, the life that Emmett Till should have lived was lived by his mother Mrs. Till went on to live until the age of 81 and passed away in 2003, The story of Emmett Till remains alive for others to be touched and brings the awareness of his brutal and senseless murder. Emmett Till’s death changed the world and open people’s eyes to
Recently in the news paper in the York area an old distance friend of mine Travis Laughman is accused of beating his girlfriends baby Kellen Koller 2. Kellen Koller died at Hershey Medical Center. My first reaction was “I can’t believe this.” “It can’t be him!” I couldn’t come to terms to hear that an old friend of mine was a murder. Many young parents have a hard time with a crying baby. Not be able to get them to stop so frustration sets in. There are many cases where young parents are so overwhelmed and are exhausted and they just click and start to take there anger out of there babies.
Racial discrimination in this time period was a very crucial issue. This case should have never happened. Why were these men murdered for fighting for what they believed in? The civil rights act of 1964 was a prime example of what should have been done before these men were murdered and all of these executions might have been prevented. To this day racial segregation, religion and other forms of discrimination still go on but something is being done about it. Innocent people are not being murdered because of three men who lost their lives due to discrimination. Even though these men are gone it is because of their death that people are still fighting for equality.

Over the past half century, violence in the United States has increased dramatically. Children who were raised in a tough, low-income neighborhood often fail to escape exposure to violence. They may witness homicides, assaults, and some may even have had a friend who had been killed. According to recent research, these children have higher violence rates than those kids who grew up in a non-violent neighborhood.
...ly thing a parent can do is teaching their child right from wrong and pray for the best. What do you think will happen to your child when all his or hers life they have been protected and sheltered from the world? What will happen when this child becomes an adult and has been so sheltered they become venerable to society? Yes, there are many dangers in the world but you cannot always protect your child.
A Time to Kill directed by Joel Schumacher took place in Mississippi in 1996. The movie is related to the tension between the white and black communities during that era. It talks about the rape of a ten-year-old black girl, Tonya, by two white men. Tonya was beaten, tortured, and mutilated. Hailey met with lawyer, Jake Brigance, in the store and he told him that he is going to do something to the rapists. While the rapists were heading to the judge's chambers, Hailey came up with a rifle and shot and killed the two rapists and shot the officer in the leg. Hailey ran to his home to say goodbye to his wife and kids before he was arrested. Hailey knew what would happen to a black man who killed white men and did not believe he would have an opportunity
We as parents always have hopes and dreams that our children will grow up to be doctors, lawyers or someone successful and a law abiding citizen. Not until life throws a curve ball and we get that dreaded call that your child has been involved in something so unimaginable you never thought he or she was capable of and that crime is murder. We as parents always want to believe that our children are not capable of doing such a deed, but often timer we tend to see the things we want to see and not what is really in front of us. Most people like to call it “turning a blind eye” meaning sight unseen. When tragedy as this happens and its either someone we know or our own children, find ourselves not wanting to deal with the problem or the issue.
