In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the author used juxtaposition and imagery to draw a parallel between the two characters, Montag and Clarisse. He discusses them by placing their traits in comparison with one another to highlight their differences. One of the most obvious ways Bradbury applied imagery in the first chapter is by the constant comparison of those in the fireman’s world to serpant or bug-like creatures. In fact, the novel starts off with a vivid image of the fireman burning down a book filled house with “the great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world…” (Bradbury 1). Ray Bradbury’s use of diction creates tones that are critical, impulsive, and benevolent in Fahrenheit 451 when the firemen “fix” the old woman’s library. First, Bradbury’s tone is critical when he writes, “Beatty, Stoneman, and Black ran up the sidewalk, suddenly odious and fat in their plump fireproof slickers” (Bradbury 33). Montag is observing his coworkers as they are walking up to the suspected woman’s house. Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 opens with Guy Montag, a fireman, reminiscing of the pleasures of burning. As the story unfolds, we learn that Montag is a fireman who rids the world of books by burning all that are found. Walking home one night Montag meets Clarisse, his strong minded neighbor. She begins peppering him with questions. Clarisse doesn’t go along with societal norms and Montag realizes that immediately. “I rarely watch the 'parlor walls ' or go to races or Fun Parks. So I 've lots of time for crazy thoughts, I guess.” (Bradbury 3) Clarisse uses her imagination brought by stories from books and family instead of watching television. Clarisse helps Montag realize that the government induced censorship and conformation is stifling society’s education and imagination. This relation is being compared to the dictator relationship of sheep and their shepherds. In this case, Montag is the sheep and the controlling government is the shepherd. Beatty explains it as straying because similar to how sheep get out from under the strict conditions of their shepherds, occasionally people in this society try to think against and rebel the rules. Montag has gone astray and in this part of the book he is not willing to go back to work after the incident with the old woman. He realises how she provided insight towards his inner self and that she had to have died for something important. Further, this example of oppression from the book shows that the government thinks they have been successful in controlling what knowledge the people can gain, so that if no one has more sensibility than them, who will be able to oppose their decisions? Additionally, another reference to the novel that illustrates the metaphor device as a way to show oppression is when Montag talks to Faber about the rebellion. However, Faber thinks it is too late and is not willing to take the risk at first. Faber quotes: “Why waste your final hours racing about your cage denying you’re a squirrel” (68). This example of a metaphor compares the people of 451 to squirrels locked in a cage. The people have been censored from everything outside of this cage they have been pressed into, everyone the same. Ray Bradbury wrote a short story that appeared in Galaxy science fiction in 1950, which later became the novel Fahrenheit 451 in 1953. This novel takes place in a dystopian society where books are illegal and firemen start fires.
Fire is very common in basic human life and has many purposes. With its many uses, fire’s symbolic meaning is open to various interpretations. In regards to Fahrenheit 451 fire can symbolize knowledge, destruction, and also rebirth. Ray Bradbury illustrates correctly the ambiguity of fire’s metaphors through Montag. As Montag gains new perspectives on fire readers are shown that fire is a very prominent symbol with multiple meanings.
In Fahrenheit 451 the main characters are Montag, Faber, Clarisse, and Beatty. Montag is someone who knows what he wants and what he wants is change. He is a fireman who suddenly realizes the emptiness of his life and starts to search for meaning in the books he is supposed to be burning. Though he is sometimes rash and has a hard time thinking for himself, he is determined to break free from the oppression of ignorance. He quickly forms unusually strong attachments with anyone who seems receptive to true friendship. At first, Montag believes that he is happy. He thinks this because of the question that Clarisse asks him. When he views himself in the firehouse mirror after a night of burning, he grins "the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame." His biggest regret in life is not having a better relationship with his wife. Faber is a very wise and intellectual man. He readily admits that the current state of society is due to the cowardice of people like himself, who would not speak out against book burning when they still could have stopped it. He berates himself for being a coward, but he shows himself capable of acts that require great courage and place him in considerable danger. Clarisse seems to always be of in her own world. She was a beautiful seventeen-year-old who introduces Montag to the world's potential for beauty and meaning with her gentle innocence and curiosity. She is an outcast from society because of her odd habits, which include hiking, playing with flowers, and asking questions. She asks questions such as, "Are you happy?
As the novel begins to unfold, Bradbury displays an act of rebellion starting to rise, shown throughout some of the characters feelings. Clarisse, a young and free spirited teenager is an example of the new kind of spontaneous personality not ordinary but is becoming more popular. Light, especially fire, and darkness are significantly reoccurring themes in Fahrenheit 451. Guy Montag, the main character, is a fireman, but in this futuristic world the job description of a fireman is to start fires wherever books are found; instead of putting them out. Montag takes a journey from a literary darkness to a knowledgeable light. This journey can be compared to the short story Allegory of the Cave by Plato, in which a prisoner experiences a similar journey. An example of light, in reference to knowledge, occurs just after Montag meets Clarisse for the first time. "When they reached her house all its lights were blazing" (9). Since Montag had rarely seen that many house lights on, I interpreted those lines as saying "that house is full of knowledge and enlightenment; not like the rest of the houses around here which are always dark." Clarisse went on to explain to Montag that her mother, father, and uncle were just sitting around and talking. This was also something that wasn't very commonplace in the city. Fire is an important element of symbolism in Fahrenheit 451. Fire consumes minds, spirits, men, ideas, and books. Fire plays two very different roles in this book. The book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury illustrates a dystopia of what Bradbury believes might eventually happen to society. This is extensively referenced to in Captain Beatty’s monologue lecture to Guy Montag explaining how Bradbury’s dystopia came to be, and why books are no longer necessary to that society and therefore were completely removed and made illegal. Ray Bradbury’s main fears in the evolution of society can be broken down into three ideas; loss of individuality, overuse of technology, and the quickening of daily life. If society goes on as it is, Bradbury is afraid that media will be more brief, people will become less individual, life will be more fast paced, minorities will have too much voice, and technology will become unnaturally prominent everyday life.
After reading and analyzing the passage from the novel Fahrenheit 451 we were able to figure out how Bradbury's use of diction not only creates a specific tone, but also uncovers the main character, Montag. Montag is a the opposite of a firefighter, in which he creates fires rather than putting them out, and when Bradbury describes his job by saying that the “house jumped up in a gorging fire”, reveals Montag's malicious nature. Clarisse, a seventeen-year-old high school student, is asking questions about what Montag, thirty-year-old fireman does for a living. He goes onto reply with their unofficial slogan, “‘It’s fine work. Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whitman, Friday Faulkner, burn ‘em to ashes. That’s our official slogan.’” (Bradbury 6). In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, there are many themes, symbols, and motifs that are found throughout the novel. For my journal response, I have chosen to discuss nature as a prevalent symbol in the book. The main character, Montag, lives in a society where technology is overwhelmingly popular, and nature is regarded as an unpredictable variable that should be avoided. Technology is used to repress the citizens, but the oppression is disguised as entertainment, like the TV parlour. On the opposite end of the spectrum, nature is viewed as boring and dull, but it is a way to escape the brainwashing that technology brings. People who enjoy nature are deemed insane and are forced to go into therapy. Clarisse says “My psychiatrist wants to know why I go out and hike around in the forests and watch the birds and collect butterflies,” (Bradbury 23) which shows she is a threat to the control that the government has put upon the people by enjoying nature.
