How Does Bilbo Change In The Hobbit

The main character in the book The Hobbit, by J.J.R. Tolkien is Bilbo Baggins. In the beginning of the book he is a calm, predictable hobbit. That starts to change when Gandalf and the dwarves ask him to go on an adventure. He leaves his hobbit hole in The Hill. On his adventure, he goes through many dangerous things. These things change who Bilbo is as a character and as a person. Throughout the book his conflicting family backgrounds, relations with the dwarves, and adaptability create an amazing story. At the beginning of the book, Bilbo lives a peaceful, simple life in his hobbit hole in The Hill. Bilbo’s mother is a Took, and his father is a Baggins, and the two families are very different. Tolkien explains that the Baggins “never had any adventures or did anything unexpected” (2). The Baggins are very predictable and calm. They are okay with being relaxed and not risking their safety. He does things that are courageous and dangerous. One of these things is bravely fighting off giant spiders in the forest. Tolkien writes, “Bilbo came at it [the Spider King] before it could disappear and struck it with his sword right in the eyes. Then it went mad and leaped and danced and flung out its legs in horrible jerks...” (156). Bilbo kills the Spider King fearlessly. The dwarves are impressed by this and begin to respect him more. Later in the book when the dwarves have been captured, he devises a plan to save them. Tolkien writes that Bilbo, “wondered if it [the water-gate] could be used for the escape of his friends and at last he had the desperate beginnings of a plan” (177). His plan was made quickly and was risky, but it is well executed and worked very well. The dwarves are impressed by this.
