There is a constant battle, between personal ambition and group cooperation, within the United States. Many people have formed unique opinions on this topic. One of these opinions include the idea that our actions are motivated solely by our needs and wants. Another common belief is individual success has fractured our society and leads to the devaluing of those who struggle. The last belief I will discuss today is that personal ambition serves the common good. I agree that personal ambition helps our American society strive. Success is a common goal of Americans. The motivated people who do become successful become role models for all other Americans who either struggle or have not yet succeeded in their life. In other perspectives, personal success is frowned upon as they believe it takes away from those who struggle. I disagree with this statement because seeing other fellow Americans succeed gives others hope that they too can reach success. I also don't agree with the idea that personal success devalues the ones who struggle because most people who are successful give back to the lesser with Social Security and Medicaid. His personal ambition, to create the lightbulb, not only served the common people in day to day life, but also helped sparked hope into others. This lead them to believe that they could also help benefit society. Thomas Edison’s light bulb continues to serve the common good by making day to day life easier and allowing people to follow the strong example set by him. After seeing what strugglers, like Thomas Edison, could do, people went on to create more innovative instruments like the television, the telephone and even the car. As showed by Thomas Edison, personal ambition did not take away from those who struggled, but instead it provided hope for them to reach their own success, and eventually lead to nation-wide
