In America the process of aging is generally viewed negatively. It is associated with physical and mental deterioration. A bias toward individuals in late adulthood, known as “ageism,” negatively affects the elderly in areas such as the workplace, healthcare, and advertising among others. These negative stereotypes are thought to begin in childhood, and if left unchallenged, follow an individual into late adulthood(The Associated Press, 2004). The perceptions of aging can affect an individuals wellbeing, especially when they reach late adulthood. Research shows that adults with a positive view towards aging live longer than those who view aging negatively(Levy, 2002).

The condition of old age in primitive and prehistoric societies has been described by the folk tales and cave drawings of that have survived to the present (Fisher, 1978). Likewise, it is possible that current societal views of aging may be illuminated through the impressions created by contemporary agents of socialization. And while it is difficult to determine whether stereotypical images are derived from reality or if, if fact, such images create reality (Clark, 1980), it is possible to investigate how and to what extent certain institutions reflect various images of the aging process.
As the decades have passed, the life expectancy has increased rapidly. This means people are living longer lives and becoming much older than the average life expectancy. Along with living a longer life, ageism may start to appear in older adult’s everyday routines. Ageism can be seen in many places, for instance,: the grocery store, on billboards, in doctor’s offices, on commercials, etc. This seems to be a growing complication and may even hurt the feelings of some people reaching retirement age. It is difficult at best to think positively when older people are viewed as “incompetent, boring, inactive, dependent, unproductive, weak, unhealthy, passive, ugly, dull, and sad” (Gething, 1999, p. 2). Among health care professionals, discrimination and stereotypical behaviors are very prevalent, even though more often than not these individuals do not realize their actions are ageist. “Ageism hinders people from seeing the potential of aging, anticipation their own aging, and being responsive to the needs of older people” (McGuire, Klein & Shu-Li, 2008, p. 12). All too often, health care providers rely on a patient’s chronological age rather than their functional age when determining their needs and what interventions are prescribed.
