I believe that someone who exemplifies the same type of courage as Gerald R. Ford is another president, John Q. Adams, following my own definition that courage means remaining strong in the face of adversity and opposition. During Adams’ presidency, as a reaction to the defeat of Jackson in the House of Representatives and Adams’ “corrupt bargain” with Henry Clay, he faced opposition on every single issue he put through Congress and passed almost no significant policy measures while he was president. However, he continued his political career past the presidency, unlike any other president and served in the House of Representatives, which is what I believe demonstrates his courage. His mother was especially hard on him, writing that she would prefer that he die than fail so that she would not have to grieve as much. He was raised with the expectation that he would become president. Although during his presidency he accomplished the least compared to the other political offices he held during that time he demonstrated his courage the most, continually striving to advance his ideas. However, these policies came too late for the Hamiltonian programs and too early expansive government programs for New Deal in the 1930’s. During his presidency, Adams tried to put in place progressive domestic policies such as the building of roads and canals financed by the sale of public lands, he sought to put the United States in a position to lead the world in the arts and sciences by building a national university, financing scientific expeditions, and the building of an observatory. He also sought to designate lands in the west for Native Americans. Due to the massive Jacksonian opposition to Adams all of his efforts ended up being shot down and vilified as beyond constitutional
