Nearly everyone believes that electronics has made life easier and more comfortable and that it has enabled us to do tasks that we could not do. Electronics are very advanced technology in the world, while these advancements have brought new aspects of health, freedom and gratification. However, as with almost everything we human beings have created, it has also become a serious problem when concerning eyesight, health, stress, and causes children to become recluse and violent. The overuse of technology may interfere with a students’ ability to learn and attend lessons. Electronic devices are designed to save time and help people to be more efficient. However, it causes addiction, health, and behavior problems. First, people are distracted and addicted to digital devices mainly because it saves time and it is more convenient. According to the NYU Child Study Center, playing too much video game may give children a difficult time on how to differentiate between reality and fantasy. (Roth)With the advanced technology, simple questions, and calculations are done for most people. Consequently, this saves time and effort, but it causes many people to become dependent on using electronics. Which can decrease their writing and reading skills, and to become isolated from society. Students who play with digital devices in school pay less attention to assignments and often ignore it. (Coen)The overuse of electronics has become a serious factor in suffering from grades. Second, electronics are the main reason of causing health problems. In recent years, the widespread use of cell phones has led to increase concerns about possible health hazards, particularly brain cancer. Brain cancer is a disease in which cancer cells arise in the brain tis... ... middle of paper ... ...cing the Pros and Cons of the Effects of Technology on Kids is to Practice Moderation” inside technology (February 21, 2010) (12/24/2013) Roberts, Holly L. “The Negative Effects Electronics Have on Teens” livestrong.com(Oct 21, 2013) (12/24/2013) Roth, Erica “The Pros and Cons of Exposing Children to Electronic Games” livestrong.com (Dec 11, 2009) (2013/12/29) Thompson, Sarah “Pros and Cons of Kids Using Computers”livestrong.com (Oct 21, 2013) (2013/12/30)
While admitting the power of technology, he also points out the adverse effects of excessive use of technology in the education system. He states, “Computers make our worst educational nightmare come true” (279). According to him, improper or overuse of computers hinders learning ability. He reports that over the past few years, computers have been assumed to be a necessity in America’s classrooms and introduced to children from elementary levels. However, technology can be addictive, and students may overuse it, leading to a drop in educational standards.
Video games do not make us more intelligent. They may however, make us more prone to violence and sex. Video games are preventing us from screening out distractions and making thinking deeply a difficult task. Our brains become overwhelmed when multitasking. Moreover, Johnson states “... a modern video game can take forty hours to complete”. Forty hours keep kids from homework and as Rachael Rettner states in livescience, “The results show that boys given a PlayStation II are slower to progress in their reading and writing skills and have more learning problems reported by their teachers than those not given a system”. The sole reason studies come back positive for video games being productive is due to the fact that they test a regular video gamer with a non-gamer. Regular video gamers will do better in the study because the more they play, the better they get. Not many realize the effect of these “fully realized imaginary worlds”, it is making it harder for people to differentiate their virtual life with their real
First of all, using electronics causes people to get distracted. According to Nicholas Carr, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” from The New York Times Upfront, “When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.”This sentence stated by Nicholas Carr contributes to my claim of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” For instance, when students are at home using their electronics they get distracted from doing their homework. This is a way technology is affecting many students. This article by Nicholas Carr supports my argument of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because many students do get distracted while using electronics causing them not to do their work.
In 1998 a Maryland neurologist, Dr. Christopher Newman, was diagnosed with brain cancer and he could no longer work as a result of his disease. He claimed that the Motorola cell phone he had in 1992 to keep in touch with his patients gave him cancer. Then in 2000, he filed an $800 million lawsuit against several wireless providers including Motorola Inc., Verizon Communications Corp., Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems, and others. Within a month, the U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake dismissed the case due to lack of evidence. This case happened during a time where people were confused about how electromagnetic radiation affects the human body. Fast-forward to today and there is still confusion. A lot of people today feel like they are at risk from developing cancer from electronic devices like cell phones, microwaves, and laptops. That is simply not true.
The Pew Research Center focuses on technology-related things and conducted a survey for 2,462 teachers. Ninety percent of those teachers believed that technology was causing their students to become more easily distracted with shorter attention spans. An article on Huffington Post mentioned a study that showed that students could not focus on their homework for more than two minutes before having to look at some kind of electronical device like their phone or television. The Kaiser Family Foundation found that about half of students from the ages of eight to eighteen do their homework while using some kind of electronical device. Technology has affected our focus so much that we can't even focus on the little things for too long. Studies have even shown that people who use the internet at work change tabs or check their email about thirty-seven times an hour! All this multitasking can cause us to become more distracted. Sometimes, we can even become distracted towards the people around us.
How many of you think technology is necessary in your life? Would you feel the same way if you knew, how often children get tortured because of it? I don 't think so! Technology based companies such as Apple and Samsung usually tell people having technology or anything electronic can change your life in a positive way. Ok, I admit that 's true. But it could also be a weapon of violence, it could cause millions of children to get hurt every single day. They are many way 's technology can create alifetime of pain for a lot of kids’. One way is that it creates digitally eyestrain, which includes burning, itchy or tired eyes. Also it could cause double visions, headache and loss of focus. They are many side
The past two decades have overwhelmed the human experience with technology, along with all its distractions. The direct relationship between the mind and the body’s ability to adjust from these distractions can be extremely difficult .Further research has shown that it has become an addiction for many. Technology has significantly improved our lives as a whole through experiences such as Global Positioning System (GPS), cell phones and social networking allowing us to communicate with different people around the world. These technologies make our daily lives easier and more efficient. However, this also discusses the effects of technology on various aspects of our everyday personal experiences both with each other and with the world around us. On the other hand technologies such as cell phones have become a problem in getting students to focus in class and distracting drivers and thus, resulting in vehicle accidents. Technology is beneficial, but can also become an inescapable distraction in our lives. It is important to view technology as having the ability to make our lives better or worse, yet also as having the ability to change our personal lives and behavioral patterns.
It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time. People are convinced that technology is an effective tool that will further learning. This can be true, but when you use tablets and different devices in class for an hour every day, the students will not be focused on schoolwork. In the article “Technology in the Classroom: Beginnings and Endings”, Mary Ann Matras suggests that, “The pencil is still the most efficient tool”.
Brain tumors and eye cancer are two health concerns of cell phones that are currently under investigation. Many people have heard rumors about whether or not cell phones are responsible for these health problems, but answers never seem to be found.
As the time passes, technology is expanding and developing many creative ideas. Unlike in the past, nowadays we have computers, TVs, internet, and many inventions that have bad and good effects on us. Children used to interact with society by hanging out and playing sports with each other, but now we can see a big percentage of children who play video games for many hours daily. Addiction controls the lives of people, there is addiction to drugs, cigarettes, alcohol or gambling, and there are some forms of addiction associated with modern life, such as the Internet and video games. Most people think that video games are harmful and a waste of time.
According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
Since the telephone’s invention in 1876, it has made human communication easier and added to the convenience of life. Being able to talk to a person that is hundreds, or even thousands of miles away has enhanced our forms of communication. However, when the invention of the first telephone came about, it was only for the elite and required enormous and heavy equipment in order for it to be operable, thus many did not own one. They eventually increased in popularity, which led to a new innovation, the cellular phone, which came about in 1973. However, still only a handful of people had them. The first cell phone was of considerable size and was not available for most until around 1992. Today, there are close to 6.8 billion cell phone subscriptions currently in the world, and the majority of phones are considered smart phones, cell phones that integrate email, internet, and apps on a touch screen handheld device. Currently 78% of all American teens, ages 12 through 17, own a cell phone (Mary Madden 2). Cellphones usage has been connected with extreme health issues. As a matter of fact, high usage of cell phones, defined as 2,000 hours of usage spread across many years, has been shown to be linked with brain tumors in a Swedish study (Christian Nordqvist). According to Christian Nordqvist, a researcher, “85 of the 905 people who had a malignant tumor were high users of cell phones - they started using mobile phones a long
There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. As the years move on, the negative effects have begun to outnumber the positive. The generations previous spent their childhood making forts, fishing, and using their imaginations, contrary to today’s generations who spend their free time texting, playing video games, and watching videos. Damaging effects such as decreases in school performances, addiction to electronics, and lack of brain development have all been linked to the electronic media stimulation. In order to prevent the future generation from following in the current generations footsteps, one must full comprehend just how much technology impacts
They are getting so wrapped up in the instantaneous entertainment at the palm of their hands that “the average American boy or girl spends as few as 30 minutes in unstructured outdoor play each day, and more than seven hours each day in front of an electronic screen.”. It’s no wonder why children today are so stress and overwhelmed. Our brains evolved in ‘real time’, the computers that we find ourselves in front of for hours on end process information so much faster than what we ourselves are capable of doing that it stressing our brain out; having to keep up is too taxing. The brain can only store so much information, if it has the choice to hold on to stimulating video games or something relevant such as information learned in school, the brain will choose the exciting stimulation. If children were to spend more time outside playing, reading, or doing anything in ‘real time’ it would allow their brains to slow down and process and retain
Cell phones are one of the greatest inventions in the world. We can imagine how life would be without cell phones. Cell phones are very handy; it can make our communication easier. Also cell phones can provide us with everything, like relaxing with music, browsing the internet, chatting on social networking sites or playing games. Unfortunately cell phones are not risk free. Using cell phones involve emission of EMR electromagnetic radiation, which is a dangerous sort of energy wave, is produce by modern appliances that surround us in everyday lives. The worst causes of EMR are cell phones. These days especially children are getting addicted to cell phones. When you are talking on your phone, there are microwaves going through your head. There has been a study on the development of brain tumors and the amount of time you take on the phone due to radio waves. However, people do not realize the consequences and negative effects cell phones cause. It causes diseases and disorders and other harmful damages to our body and health. Nevertheless, cell phones are also not dangerous.
