The television and music industry is one of the main industries of today. I chose to research the company BET (Black Entertainment Television). BET is the number one black television network on television today and it is the only television show that does not have any white announcers or white based shows, everything is based on blacks and what is going on today in the lives of Black people.
BET is a show for the ages and what I mean by that is that you will only ever hear about teenagers and young adults watching it, it is not a show that is centered around all age groups like MTV (Music Television). The people that BET is targeted towards are the group that is what makes the world go round.
But the problem with BET is that even though it targets the main age groups of the world, it only is targeted towards the black race and isn’t meant for whites. BET is not a very diverse company and they need to become one, but if they become more diverse they could actually loose the business they have now. It is the only show in the world that has no white television announcers and will not have any television shows that are white based and that would encourage white living.
BET is one of those shows that plays all rap videos and goes around to the ghetto’s of the US and shows what life is really like outside of the yuppie lifestyle so many people think this world is like. It shows how things are and they shouldn’t change anything. If they changed the races they attracted then I believe they would loose money. BET is probably the only company that can get away with not being very diverse and still be successful. They will never be a diverse company and will never show diverse shows.
Delacroix’s boss, Thomas Dunwitty, feels entitled to be and “act black and no matter how hard he tries to be black, he will always be white. Dunwitty is a typical racist that loves and appreciates Black culture, but doesn’t love and appreciate Black people. In the movie, he only wants to use Black people for entertainment and only wants to see them portrayed as their stereotype, which is being ignorant idiots. He doesn’t want educated Black people on his network. No, he wants the obedient, compliant “nigger” who is willing to do anything for “massa”. Dunwitty wants a “nigga” show. He wanted to use “being a nigga” as entertainment. He loved the fact that the show makes an absolute mockery of slavery and Black people because he thinks it’s not racist or wrong because it was made by a Black person. This movie showed me that no matter how hard we try to destroy stereotypes, they will always be in effect. People don’t want a show that shows black empowerment, truth, positivity, or Black intelligence. They only want the ignorant Black people, the stupidity, disrespect, and negativity. People want Black people to be portrayed this way on television just to say “see this is really how they act”. Intelligent Black people with dignity
Many people say they want to avoid drama, and this is due to the fact that drama emits certain dark emotions, like sadness and fear. These emotions are prevalent in everyone’s reality. In reality, the issue of race is drama filled and serious, and this is how these issue should be portrayed on TV shows. People need to realize that racial conflict is not a joking matter, because it causes pain for many people in society. One drama TV show that accurately portrays the struggle of race is Luke Cage. The setting of this TV show is dark, mainly due to what the show wants to accomplish. The show is trying to put its audience in the situation of a struggling black male, and this informs the audience of the severity of his issues. This show inspires people to speak out against race, because on the powerful words the show displays. For example, the shows use of the word ni**er brings up a certain nuance not between white people and black people, but within the black community. The use of this word is exactly the power drama shows have over comedy shows, because drama shows can portray these nuances, while comedy show portray a general
Only 4% of Hispanics make up the cast of prime-time television shows, a miniscule amount considering that Hispanic-Americans are the largest minority group in the US. The ways in which minorities are portrayed in the show have their good aspects as well as bad aspects. This is to be expected since showing all good points or all the bad points isn't a fair perspective of the Latino population. As a show that points out a minority, its necessary to look as the good as well as the bad to find if it is actually a optimistic view of the race or a pessimistic one.
Marlon T. Riggs’ video, Color Adjustment, offers the viewer an exciting trip though the history of television, focusing on the representation, or lack thereof, of African-Americans. A perfectly chosen combination of television producers, actors, sociologists, and cultural critics join forces to offer insight and professional opinion about the status of African-Americans in television since the inception of television itself. As Color Adjustment traces the history of television shows from Amos n’ Andy and Julia to "ghetto sitcoms" and The Cosby Show, the cast of television professionals and cultural critics discuss the impacts those representations have on both the African-American community and our society as a whole. Color Adjustment continually asks the question: "Are these images positive?" This video raises the viewer’s awareness about issues of positive images for African-Americans on television.
... model for how the entertainment and media industries depict black people must change. Despite the progress that blacks have worked toward since the days of slavery, society continues to give in to the monetary benefits of producing self-disparaging entertainment and media. It is not only up to the directors, editors, producers and writers to establish this change, but it should also be the demand of the people, or the consumer. If the images of black people in the media are improved the outlook within the community will improve as well. Not only will positive goals and achievements become more realistic for black people if the media outlets discontinue their practice of equating blacks with aggression, lawlessness and violence, but a greater good will also result for whites, which would be represented by a true autonomy and equality in American society.
Sappho, as seen in poem 16 when she states that Helen went sailing for Troy not for her children or parents, but for love, implies that love is of utmost importance, more so even than one’s family. Sappho attempts to portray love realistically; with both the joy and pain that love brings to one’s life. In poem 31, Sappho focuses on the sharp pain love is capable of bestowing on someone. Sappho first speaks bitterly about the man talking to the women she loves. After recounting the passion she feels for this women, Sappho then discusses how she feels as if her despair might kill her. The jealousy expressed in this poem is one of the many woeful consequences of
Global warming has been going on for one to two centuries now. It has affected the earth a lot and not only that , it has also affected the air. Global warming has consequences as stated before , and it usually happens with solar and terrestrial radiation. Even though people believe that all of this is caused by humans. Scientists believe that global warming was going to be caused by sickness or in other words by diseases but it turns out that they were wrong. Not everyone believes that global weather is a bad thing but they just haven’t realized how bad it has affected us. As long as global warming is around the temperatures will keep on rising, animals will keep on decreasing, and the atmosphere will keep on trapping heat. That’s what global warming is all about. It’s all about warming up the atmosphere and affecting those around them.
(http://www.engl.virgina.edu/~enwr1016/amc2d.html) Then in the late 90’s the TV World came out with a whole new channel BET. Black Entertainment Television, this was to make African Americans more noticed around the world.By the late 1990s more African Americans than ever were involved in the television industry, some in executive and production roles.
Television has changed dramatically since its release. Television, over the years, has also affected society. Television in the 1960s almost only included Caucasian actors. The minorities that did appear in a television show were often played stereotypes. For instance, an African American would play the role as a household servant. The creators of a television show would always assume that their viewers were all white. Most creators felt that people would not want to watch a show about minorities. Television did not start developing television shows about minorities until the 1980s. In 1950s the NAACP often filed lawsuits on television shows that discriminated their actors. The NAACP did not like that minorities could not play lead roles in
The Hurst book discusses in Chapter 8, that “whiteness is invisible to most whites,” this could be a reason that there is not a lot of diversity in Hollywood, but it could also be racism, and discrimination toward people of different ethnicities as well (Hurst, 183). According, to Hurst racism is “embedded in the structure and institutions, and defining racism individualistically rather than in structural terms, has allowed our attention to be defected from White privilege” (Hurst, 184). White privilege is present in Hollywood, everything is ran by white people, and it is the white writers and directors, they decided who they will cast in the show or movie. Racial and ethnic diversity in TV programming should not be a problem in the 21st century, this is a problem of the past and should not still be going on. The NPR article discusses the shift of more series with “non-white actors, and a more non-white cast, but that still is on 30% of all TV shows” that is a major improvement but there still needs to be more
One way that our health can be affected is due to the droughts that global warming can cause. With droughts our water supply becomes scarce. As a result, civilians can suffer from dehydration. Disasters such as: severe storms, wildfires, and flooding can cause health risks as well. These disasters cause by climate change can cause burns, drowning, broken bones, and other physical injuries. Pollution will add on more health risks. By polluting, we are “dirtying” the air that we breath. Although we do not know all of the long term effects of climate change, it is almost guaranteed that there will be even more health issues. Eventually the spread of diseases will also be more prevalent. Insects that can carry diseases such as mosquitos will not be dying off every winter if something is not done about emission of greenhouse
It is within the hands of producers to represent minorities in the news and film, because the source of the under-representation lies at the root with them, the ones casting and producing the product being screened and printed. The people producing and creating these shows and films are the ones who are not casting or misrepresenting minorities, causing the amount of female protagonists globally to be as low as 23% (stated by the New York Film Academy). So if the solution is for parents to show films that broadcast diversity, the question is: where can that content be found? With little to no representation of minorities in the media, there is nearly no content to show. In order to give a voice to smaller groups, eliminate harmful stereotypes, and give everybody an equal chance in professions, media containing correct representation needs to be created first, in all
...ity to predict consequences, manipulating different symbols in the world they represent, making successful transfers and performances in real life situations. However, the negative aspects and effects of technology often lead to problems that affect children’s learning and growing process, including short attention spans, poor academic performances and social skills, and health risks. These negative effects lead to greater chances for children to suffer from psychological disorders and possible illnesses. In order to solve these problems, parents and teacher need to set up guidelines and make necessary adjustments to minimize the negative effects of technology. As children learn to manage and balance their time between technology and other activities, they will become more successful in the future and more prepared the children to thrive in this world of technology.
This article addresses how the internet and use of computers is in all aspects of our life directly or indirectly. The many ways technology can be used can help enhance the creativity in our children’s lives. As children participate more and more on technology, which now includes
Global warming is caused by pollution eating away at the ozone layer of the atmosphere, as well as greenhouse gases trapping heat. The global average surface temperature rose 0.6 to 0.9 degrees Celsius (1.1 to 1.6° F) between 1906 and 2005, and the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years. (Riebeek 2) Many scientists believe that the effects of global warming will greatly impact the planet. Direct effect of Global Warming is increased heat on Earth then it will cause ice on poles to melt, leading to rising sea levels and land loss, because many areas will be under water. Besides that, many events of catastrophic weather will occur, such as droughts, floods, volcanic, tsunamis and earthquake. Although some areas of Earth will become wetter and flood due to global warming, other areas will suffer serious droughts and heat waves. Obviously, Africa will receive the worst of it, with more severe droughts also expected in Europe. After all, these effects spell one thing for the countries of the world: economic consequences. The chaos of weather patterns brought hurricanes, tsunamis, or earthquakes that cause billions of dollars in damage, diseases cost money to treat and control and conflicts exacerbate a...
