How Did The Printing Press Impact The Renaissance

When one thinks of the Dark Ages, several images may come to mind, most of which probably share some common themes: lack of culture and education, disease, turmoil and oppression. In contrast, there was a great deal of advancement in science, mathematics, technology, religion, literature, and the arts during the Renaissance, leaving it open to question how such abrupt changes in society could come about. This can be explained by one invention, which would lay the groundwork for all of these advancements. The invention of the movable type printing press had a large impact on society in that it led to the Renaissance and many important aspects of the time period by increasing the availability of books to the general public. With books being much less burdensome to make, they became much less costly. Rather than being available to only a select few, they were now available to almost everyone, increasing literacy and education. By doing so, as well as making it easier to spread ideas, new innovations and improvements were visible in all aspects of society. With science, it helped to start a revolution in astronomy, as well as other sciences. With religion, it helped to start a revolution in the Church. With literature and the arts, books were much more readily available to the general public, as were plays and other works of art. In general, it increased knowledge, and even helped areas such as philosophy, mathematics, and architecture to thrive. In this, the printing press had a colossal impact on society, and will continue to for decades to come from all of the developments and advancements it created in society.
