The great depression influenced and scarred many lives, but it also improved the country.I think that the great depression taught many people to be grateful ,and realize that many people in the world are, and have been basically living in poverty their whole lives. For example, in the book ,No Promises In The Wind Josh and Joey had to realize and accept the fact that they don't have food and that they don`t have money. Sometimes we think of the Great depression as a horrible time, but it helped bring out the best in people. During the great depression it did help bring out the best in people, but it also brought out the worst. The stock market crash was not a party you would want to be invited to,and
because of the crash people lost their jobs, homes, and, their good lives. When Stefan lost his job because of the crash he let out all of his anger out on Joey. To sum it up the great depression brought out the worst in the best people. In the book No Promises In The Wind, a “good meal” would mean two things. A poor mans meal which consists of chopped up hot dogs, poor man's bread, and noodles. Or another “good meal” would be a potato and a piece of bread. Today people expect a five course meal at a five star restaurant. However during the depression time they didn`t expect much. For example Josh and Joey found a rooster in someone`s backyard and they boiled it, or they would have a potato. What i'm trying to say is that people today are greedy and people need to realize that they are so very lucky to have what they have. During the great depression I definitely think people were changed in ways we would never imagine. All in all i loved reading this book and learning how people's lives changed and how they became better people in general.
The Great Depression is a sad era in United States History. The Great Depression was a massive economic depression. It affected many people’s lives across the United States. The Great Depression is a an era when the US economy was at its lowest. It is after the Roaring 20s. The depression was caused mainly because of the crash of the stock market in 1929 and the government’s failed attempts to help the people. Many people’s belongings are bought with credit so they lost all their money and most of their things when the bank system failed. Others lost their jobs and many men left their families because they felt ashamed that they can’t support their family. The social fabric of the Great Depression changed greatly from the previous era. The changes in the social, the political, and the economic part of the US are part of the change in the social fabric.
The Great Depression is a time in the history of the United States that people have learned and gained knowledge from. Its harsh times and conflicts have been written about in books, seen in movies, talked about on radios, and told to families throughout the generations. Seeing how life was during the 1930s in the movie, The Cinderella Man, was a great eye opener to how the people of this time truly survived and kept their true humanity in times of havoc. The time of the 1930s should be an inspiration to the nation and cause many to do well and live life smart and prosperous.
The great depression was a very sad and hard time. This was a time where people had little money, no available jobs and just had a hard time with everything. Many people had nd any way to make money whether it was cutting kid’s hair in neighborhood, picking fruit, selling iron cords house to house or even painting a house for 5 dollars. Even though this was a very hard time some people still had hope that things would get better. This was a really bad time until Franklin Roosevelt who was for the government supporting the Americans and not the other way around became president.
The Great Depression was one of the greatest challenges that the United States faced during the twentieth century. It sidelined not only the economy of America, but also that of the entire world. The Depression was unlike anything that had been seen before. It was more prolonged and influential than any economic downturn in the history of the United States. The Depression struck fear in the government and the American people because it was so different.
Following the decade of economic prosperity and peace of the Roaring 20’s was the 1930’s which is commonly known as the Great Depression, an era of distress and instability that played an effect on altering the social, political, and economical infrastructure of the United States. Before the Great Depression, the United States was a representation of a consumer-driven society, with people loaning money from banks, in order to pay for luxurious items, they could not afford. However, in 1929, the stock market crashed, resulting in the nationwide closures of multiple banks and marked as the begin of turmoil for Americans. With the burden of the nation on the backs of all Americans, the meaning of life was changed and people waited day by day for the government to act and steer the nation back on the track for economic and political stability and progress, to be a
The Great Depression was just that, great. It was a unique experience that America has only gone through once… or perhaps twice? Maybe the 2008 American economic crisis did not lead to a recession at all; maybe it led to a second Great Depression. Of course that’s utter insanity, because everything from the numbers to the feelings show that 2000-2010 was nothing like the twenties and thirties. Realistically the most recent American recession was a barnacle on the whale of the Great Depression. Children of the recession can confirm to you that very little was similar to their twenties brethren. There was no widespread disgrace and debilitating state off living, there was only mild annoyance.
The Varied Impact of the Great Depression on American People The experiences of Americans during the Great Depression varied greatly. For most, the Great Depression was a time of hardships and trials. The way that people were tried were different though, some languished in a collapsed economy, while others had to struggle to make a living in the remote regions of the country. The years berween 1929 and 1933 were trying years for people throughout the world.
Great Depression “No one can possibly have lived through the Great Depression without being scarred by it. No amount of experience since the depression can convince someone who has lived through it that the world is safe economically.” was once stated by Isaac Asimov. The Great Depression was one of the most horrific and troubling times in American history. Many homes were affected by this tragedy and many families were injured as a result of it. Man had the opportunity to prove himself by both continuing and struggling with his family leaving them.
The Great Depression was in no way the only depression the country has ever seen, but it was one of the worst economic downfalls in the United States. As for North America and the United States, the Great Depression was the worst it had ever seen. In addition to North America, the Depression greatly affected Europe and other various countries throughout the world significantly during the 1920’s and 1930’s. The Great Depression was caused by the collapse of the Stock Market, which happened in October of 1929. The crash exhausted about forty percent of the paper values of common stocks. It was the worst depression due to the fact that at the time of the Great Depression the government involvement in the economy was higher than it had ever been. A unique government agency had been set up exclusively to prevent depressions and their related troubles for instance bank panics. All of ...
The Great Depression was a monumental event in the turbulent timeline of American history. Perhaps it could have been avoided, or at least have inflicted less damage into the heart of the American people and economy, if a few key items had been changed or reversed. The American tariff policy could have been changed and the banking practices and Hoover administration philosophies and policies should have been completely reversed. However, even if the practices had been different the depression still could have occurred because of other problems the world faced such as the world economy influences, automation and World War I.
Beginning on Black Tuesday, October 29th, 1929, a total of 14 billion dollars was lost in America’s economy. Near the end of the week the 14 billion turned into a total of 30 billion dollars (The Great Depression Facts). Many events during the Stock Market Crash caused damage to the economy and lifestyle of the country, ending with recuperations from The Depression.
The Great Depression strongly affected people all over the United States for a period of time. People were losing their jobs everyday. Unemployment was the highest it had ever been. Although the government was trying to make jobs for people, the arts, like theater, were still struggling immensely. In New York alone, there were only six theaters open between January until June. The Federal Theater Project (FTP) was the biggest controversial issue of all. There was not much being done to help save the FTP. Everything being tried, failed. They were using important money for wasteful projects. For instance a radio show helped the community, however it wasted money that could be used for more important problems.
I interviewed my grandmother, Faye Gledhill, about her life during and after the Great Depression. She was born in 1930 in Alabama. She lived with her parents and three siblings, two sisters and one brother, in a very small house in a mill town.
The great depression led us to have a better economic system and changed economic thinking. Laws were passed in order to prevent another depression from happening. Although many years have passed since the great Depression, things that were seen back then are still being seen today in 2014. High unemployment rates and low income among families forced to need the help of welfare are seen today as they were seen during the time of the Great Depression. The contrast between now and then however, is that the economy is under more control due to the laws that were passed to prevent another depression.
