Imagine being a part of a huge crowd, with countless other fans clustered against you. All of the people in the stadium are screaming, making it hard to hear the band playing. All you can feel is the sheer energy, excitement, and emotion contained in the band and the audience. This band is the Beatles. Even today, we call the Beatles one of the pioneers and the symbols of the ‘60s. Fifty years ago, “The Beatles took America by storm” (Aronwitz), and they are still one of the most beloved groups of all time. This legendary band explored many different areas of recording songs and albums, were the culture and style icons of people in that era, and inspired people with meaningful and significant lyrics in their songs. The Beatles, the most popular One of the main things that was extremely controversial was their hairstyle: the moptop. In the ‘60s, “Long hair was seen as part and parcel of an eccentric artistic temperament, perhaps with a special exemption for religious men from exotic climes who grew their hair and beards devotionally” (McGasko). By becoming one of the nation’s biggest pop sensations, the Beatles influenced many people of the younger generation to grow out their hair— the trend grew so much that there was even a manufactured Beatle wig. Although it now seems like another simple choice one makes, it once was very controversial and showed an opposition to the old generation. By growing out their hair, the Beatles encouraged the young generation of baby boomers to express themselves and differentiate from the old generation. The Beatles also had a great impact on fashion in the ‘60s. They popularized many different patterns, styles of suits, Beatles boots, and John Lennon’s signature glasses (Gibson). Some new trends they promoted were collarless suits and shirts, paisley and floral patterns, and sandals, which was very new and different from the old generation. Their fashion not only impacted America and Europe, but it spread their youthfulness and the voice of the young generation all around the world, which had never been achieved by any other pop star. Clothing was not The majority their songs were about love. The Beatles believed that love makes the world go around, and that love is the basis of everything, including respect, equality, peace, and more: “There’s nothing you can make that can’t be made/No one you can save that can't be saved/ Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time /It's easy /All you need is love/All you need is love” (Minnick). This song in particular shows that one cannot change oneself, but instead needs to learn how to love oneself and others for who they are. The popularity of the Beatles made this message spread everywhere, thus influencing many people all around the world. Another song that carried a hidden message was the song “Blackbird”: “Blackbird singing in the dead of night/Take these broken wings and learn to fly/All your life/You were only waiting for this moment to arrive” (Wawzenek). The lyrics of this song, penned by Paul McCartney, were inspired by the civil rights movement. This song expressed support for many African Americans at that time, particularly women (“bird” is British slang for women). The song “Blackbird” helped raise awareness about the importance of the civil rights movement and made it clear that the Beatles supported equality for all people. As well as raising their voice for equality, the
Although the era during which Blackbird came out most likely suggests it was written for the African American race to associate with, it very much correlates to Shelley’s being in Frankenstein. Symbolically speaking, the blackbird in the song represents the creation and his life, as he knows it. Victor simply created this being, but never took his responsibility beyond that point in regards to guiding this new life form toward happiness. Thus, the creature’s wings, that took him on his flight of life, were futile until he decided to learn and experience existence by himself. His sunken eyes, from the beginning of time, were empty forever longing for that guidance that he never received from Victor. The creature came into the world basically a newborn, pertaining to his lack of knowledge or any unfeigned emotion. And, it was the obligation of Victor to instill upon him normal morals and knowledge about the world to provide a structural and principled foundation. Needless to say, Victor failed to do so and the so the creature inevitably became the blackbird.
One of my favorite songs they produced was Free bird. I have two ideas of what I think this song means. The first one is that I think it is about a guy who is leaving his girlfriend. He says, I must be traveling on now because there’s too many places I’ve got to see. It seems to me that he wants to go because there is other things he wants to do. He wants to be a free man and get away. He also says, that if I stay with you girl things just couldn’t be the same. He states that he is free as a bird now and this bird you can not change. The way I kind of understand it is that maybe he has a problem and she don’t like it and wants him to change, but he knows he cant. I think he comes to believe that the only way to solve the problem is if he just leaves and lives his own life as he wants to. I believe that goes to show why he says he is a free bird that she can not change. Another way I interpreted it, was as a one-night stand and he was talking about what would happen the next day when he has to leave. I think he might like her, but cant change. By changing I think he cant just settle down and be with someone he loves. I think he is too into the one-night stand thing and cant change his lifestyle be dedicated to having a girl friend.
The Beatles were formed in London and consisted of four prime members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. When they first came out from Liverpool to America, they gave a clean look toward people by wearing suits and trimmed haircuts. The Rolling Stones, also formed in London later on, also consisted of four prime members in the beginning: Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, and Charlie Watts. Throughout their career, they let they hair grow long and wear whatever they wanted including concerts, giving off the “I don’t care” look. The Beatles gave a clean impression, perceived as perfect school boys while The Rolling Stones gave a dirty image to the public and didn’t care about other’s opinion and rebelled against “the man”. The Beatles are known, respectively, as the fathers of modern pop music. After their first #1 hit “Please Please Me” was released in 1963 the Beatles were set in motion to become one of the most influential groups of musicians to ever rock our world. With over forty-nine records, 37 #1’s, and thirty- four number one albums (the highest amount of any band in history), there is no denying that they made a monumental ripple in the musical world. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr surprisingly all come from humble beginnings in a town that, until their superstardom, was barely noticed on the map. Liverpool, being kn...
The Beatles are an iconic English rock band and are widely regarded as the “foremost and most influential act of the rock era” (Unterberg). Formed in Liverpool in 1960, the Beatles were comprised of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, with Stuart Sutcliffe on bass guitar in January and Pete
In addition to the 23 albums (counting soundtracks and separate US and UK releases) released during the band's life (1960-1970) there have been more than 150 compilations, recorded interviews and videos issued. Hundreds of books have been written about their personal lives, their music, and their influence on pop culture and rock
To understand Lennon’s attempt at displaying his raw emotions through this song, one must also understand the influence behind Lennon’s decision. Bob Dylan influenced all of the Beatles in a significant way in their early Beatlemania years: Dylan introduced the Beatles to marijuana, mistaking “I can’t hide” for “I get high” in “She Loves You”. While the Beatles experimented with several energy drugs, they had not yet used marijuana, and they soon discovered that it bestowed the group with the ability to relax and escape from the stress of dealing with Beatlemania. After ...
Towards the end of the decade the Hippie movement had a huge impact on the way people started to view clothing. This group rebelled against war, encouraged peace and love. Their presence had a major influence on fashion. They opted for clothing that was natural and comfortable. Accessories w...
The Beatles were best known for there 1950’s Rock and Roll. Later on, they experimented in several music styles; ranging from pop ballads, Indian music, psychedelia, and finally hard rock. The Beatles consisted of four men, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The hippie movement and the use of drugs heavily influenced The Beatles, creating a deeper meaning to their songs. McCartney and Lennon found inspiration for the song “Blackbird” when they were exploring India in 1968. An accusation about the song “Blackbird” was simply that they had heard a blackbird singing; however, while being on LSD, a psychedelic drug, they borrowed the music of a blackbird and turned it into a symbol of the hardships African American women faced during the Civil Rights Movement. Other influences such as classical components helped further The Beatles’ music career to new heights. The Beatles were known to write complex songs with deep meanings. Songs off the White Album could be interpreted to have a surface level or metaphorical meaning. “Blackbird” was about discrimination and misfortune the African American women faced during the Civil Rights Movement.
It all started in Liverpool, England where four members brought their dynamic lyrics and amazing musical beats to the world. As soon as you say the word “Beatles,” everyone knows that they were an extremely popular band who paved the way for modern day Rock n Roll. People either grew up listening to their songs, know of the band, or they are still riding on the “Beatlemania bus.” Before taking this class, I knew a moderate amount of information on the Beatles. It was known that band was made up of four members; John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. However, I never looked at the way the music was produced. The different melodies, tempos, keys, and other music essentials were foreign to me, but throughout the spring semester, we, the students, have gained musical knowledge based off the music of the
A major person that the Beatles has influenced was an artist named Kurt Cobain (widely known as the singer of Nirvana). Another short example of someone that was influenced by the Beatles was Gene Simmons (singer and bassist of KISS). Not only Artists but people were influenced by the words in the Beatles music to start fighting for rights of people. During the Vietnam war John Lennon would talk about how the world should come together and fight for peace. This came up to the song (Imagine) sung by John Lennon. The Beatles had a popular hairstyle that young teen boys got called “Mop-top”. Usually young teens wore this style of hair and it was highly mocked by adults. Clothing they wore eventually became popular to both male and female listeners. An example where the highly known glasses that John Lennon would wear called teashade glasses but are known now from people as “John Lennon glasses”, these glasses were round shaped shades. The influence of The Beatles on the people may seem small but it created a huge effect on fashion now, and on how people view the
In the White album, formally known as The Beatles album, Blackbird is deemed as an underrated song. Why do I say this? YouTube’s commentators told me, repeatedly. I personally discovered the song after reading the book The Perks of being a Wall flower during middle school. It was one of the songs that Charlie , the protagonist , had on his mix tape, and I, being the curious soul that I am, looked the songs up. Blackbird completely outshone all of the other songs. Back then, I felt like it was written for me. Thus, when I picking the songs, Blackbird was naturally one of my top 5 songs. Although, I have to admit that I did not realize that it was so popular, until I noticed that a lot of my peers are going to be writing about it as well. Back on track, Blackbird is two minutes and eighteen seconds long. It is listed as number three on the second side of the White album, and it is beautiful. In context of The White Album, the song Blackbird creates an uplifting and hopeful experience through the use of raw instrumentation and vocalized repetitive lyrics that ultimately enchant the listener.
Pop music began to take on a serious art form. Rock stars influenced fashion in a way like never before. The Beatles began the British invasion with pop culture. They were fashion icons and many copied their long hair. Others copied the rebellious look of Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones). Rock stars began speaking on behalf of the younger generation and the media was all over them. By the end of the sixties, pop music was the main force in fashion. In Europe and America, "underground" music played a big part, with underground magazines, festivals, and groups during 1966-67. Drugs such as marijuana and hallucinogens like LSD were more widely used outside of a small circle of musicians and artists. Sounds of blues, jazz, rock, electronic, Indian, and classical had inspiration in psychedelic music. Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix were leaders of this long hair, drugs, and music scene. Other music such as be-bop jazz with the beatniks, the sounds of soul that flowed from the record company Motown, and folk for hippies also inspired the way of fashion.
The Beatles wrote hundreds of songs throughout their long career and many of which had the same main ideas in them. Those two ideas seem to standout in most of their songs, and they are the ideas of peace and love. They were so passionate about these two ideas especially world peace, that they became avid participants and leaders in the anti-war movement, against the War in Vietnam. It seemed strange ...
The Beatles started their careers in England. They were a huge success there, playing in clubs and eventually for the queen herself. After the appearance before the queen, The Beatles came to the USA. The Beatles came to New York City for the first time in 1964 and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. They performed the song “I want to hold your hand” to millions of people anxious to hear their new kind of rock. They were an instant success. A couple of weeks after their New York appearance, the five best selling records were by the Beatles. They became world famous by the end of 1964. The Beatles were unusual because most rock was strong beat with no melody. The Beatles added melody to rock. The Beatles also added strong and meaningful lyrics. Many of these lyrics were derived from pop culture, and had real life meaning to the group. Most of the songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Although, every song was always credited with being written together, rarely did they write the songs this way. Usually, John and Paul would write songs separately, and then take the songs to the group and work out the kinks. Early in their careers, most of the songs written by The Beatles were about love. This changed in about 1965 when the songs became about more practical things, and about things that were going on in the world.
