The American Civil War caused a dramatic shift in style, form, and thematic discourse in American literature because it affected the people in the way they saw morality and reality. There were many reasons that the Civil War broke out. There were differences in the politics, society, and economies of the North and South. Each side had their own reasons for fighting in the war and for not being willing to compromise. The North felt they needed to hold the Union together and end the institution of slavery, while the South felt their rights were being encroached upon and secession was the only way for them to be free. Through the book I was able to see a variety of viewpoints and examine the battle of Gettysburg from individual perspectives. The Civil War was a low point in American history but many valuable lessons came from the war as well. You can see the importance of compromise and gain an appreciation for those that held our country together.
James McPherson once of the best and best American Preeminent Civil War Historian. He wrote the book to talk about the differences of each side North and South of the war. The Civil War in America was so much more than just a war. This event brought along with it so many changes. Changes like abolition of slavery, voting rights for all men, Medical advances like improved surgical skills, hospital organization, anesthetic and many more. The Civil War is at the center of the abolition of slavery although that is not the only advancement that America made toward the future during that time. The Civil War was a major turning point for America. It pushed America into the future and it couldn’t have happened without influential leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S Grant, and William A. Hammond. Each one of these influential and strong leaders made others see their great ideas and their strong leadership skills helped them to gain followers to implement these ideas and actions. All of those factors helped to advance American into the future in different ways.
Americans suffered many economic, social, and political problems in the post-Civil War era. I have identified one of each of these types of problems that I believe were among the most important during the period of 1865-1900. The economic issue that I believe had one of the biggest impacts on Americans at the time is the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. The social issue that I feel greatly affected America after the Civil War is Chinese immigration. One of the biggest political issues, to me, is the Populist Party.
It was said that this novel “led to the civil war”, or “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. After one year, 300,000 copies were sold in the U.S., and over 1 million were sold in Britain. The Civil War determined what kind of nation the United States would become. It determined whether it would be a nation with equal rights for everyone or the biggest country that still abused of slaves. The war started because of the brutal conditions slaves were living in. Many had no education what so ever and were treated worse than animals. Back then part of this country found this acceptable and demanded to keep their slaves while the others demanded freedom. Today there are many movies about the civil war. For example the movie Glory which was made in December 15, 1989 it was directed by Edward Zwick. The movie depicts the lives of African American soldiers who had to endure tougher training than the American man, and American officials who had to make these men into real action fighting soldiers. The defining characters in this movie were. Major Cabot Forbes who was very tender towards the African American soldiers and he even stood up for them. Private Trip gave up his freedom in order to fight is true fighter. Corporal Thomas Searles who struggled a lot in the training camp but in the end pulled through. Glory is mainly about men with struggles that have to overcome their torments in order to end the Civil War. It took time and strength but the colored regiment became just as good as any white one. Corporal Thomas Searles, Major Cabot Forbes, and Private Trip all fought for what they believed in even at the time of their last breathes something they would have never done at the beginning of the movie.
One of the most dangerous wars in american history, was created over a small period of time, where tensions grew rapidly throughout the country. The Civil War lasted four years, when the popular majority of people believed it would last three months before one side would face defeat. The Civil War was caused by a majority of different events that caused tensions to rise throughout the country over various subjects, such as the economies and the political standpoint of both the North and the South.The stress caused by the politics increased the infuriation throughout the country. And as the pressure of a war occurred, economies of both the North and the South were huge influences to the impact of the separation between the nation.
After the war the United States grew in its manufacturing, because goods were made at home. America gains its confidence in its country’s ability to survive and prosper. America began to rely more on itself then on other countries. Also as a result of the war, Federalist power declined rapidly, and they ceased to exist on the National stage. Division between the North and South happened and this planted the seed for the Civil War.

A comparison between two essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne that appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in 1862 can provide an assessment of the role of literature during the war. These texts have been chosen not as a comprehensive representation of political, social or perhaps aesthetic attitudes regarding the Civil War and its meanings, but rather as an indication of the various, often contradictory, responses the war provoked. A close reading of the essays will enhance our understanding not only of public interpretations of the Northern war aims, but also the conflicting views on national promise and idealized hopes for the future along with the notion of national crisis – or a possible crisis in art and representation.
The American Civil War In 1860, arguably the world's greatest nation was locked in Civil War. The war divided the country between the North (Union) and South (Confederate). The war lasted five years and by 1865 the Confederate forces were truly beaten.
