Christianity began as a movement of people revolving around a man called Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus preached to the Jewish people and was reported to perform miracles in the name of God. From this, the religion of Christianity slowly developed, with four main factors to help influence its development: the life and message of Jesus, Saint Paul and his message to the Gentiles, Christian persecution and the martyrs, and Constantine’s imperial support for the religion. Jesus’s message centralized around love and God, and taught about the 10 Commandments. Saint Paul contributed to the spread of Christianity through missionary missions, traveling more than 10,000 miles throughout the Roman Empire to bring the message of Jesus to the Gentiles. Constantine had a vision when at war with another general, and had the vision interpreted by a local bishop; of a cross saying “By this sign, conquer.” (Cohen 1-3) Constantine won the war, and, saying that he owed the victory to God, became a patron of the Christian branch that had interpreted the vision for him, and began to support Christianity. It can be concluded Christianity became the dominant religion of the Roman Empire because Emperor Constantine legalized and enforced the religion, allowing it to function publicly and be open to everyone.
One of the biggest ways in which Constantine helped Christianity become the dominant religion was by legalizing and enforcing it. He announced the end of of Christian persecution in AD 313 (Beck 171), but before this, he began to target Christian sects across the empire, creating a sort of internal purge. In a way, this unified the Christian bishops into forming a more “unitary policy” (Cohen 3). In the Edict of Milan, he legalized Christianity so that it would no longer be a persecuted religion, leading up to Theodosius’s declaration in AD 380 to make Christianity the official religion of the empire. (Beck, 171) Legalization made way for the Gentiles that
Jesus’ teachings created the religion of Christianity. Though Christians were persecuted during the beginning of time in which they began to spread, many factors helped to shape Christianity into the popular religion it is today. Christianity was able rise from just a Jesus ministry to a popular religion with the help of martyrdom, missionaries, governmental support and Jesus himself.
When he won the throne, similar to Emperor Han Wudi’s conversion to Confucianism in Han Dynasty China, converted to Christianity. Because of this conversion, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. The Christian way became very involved in government in the Roman Empire. Even though Christianity’s message is a sense of universal love, because of it intolerance of other religions, there was persecutions of pagans that lead to death. It was not until 450 CE. that a small majority of the Roman Empire was Christian. There ultimately was a split in the empire between the east and the west. The Western Empire struggled on its survival unlike the eastern Empire. The Eastern Empire strived because it stayed involved in Roman politics, administration, and armies. Because the east stayed involved within the government, they were able to last longer. The east was able to spread Christianity more effectively than that of the
The Early Christians had numerous different practices. Some of them sacrificed animals, others held mass, and some even died in order to go with God. This helped with the spread of Christianity because it allowed people to attend mass and be forgiven of their sins. It also showed how cruel the Romans were and that religious freedom was being taken away from them.
Historians still question why Emperor Constantine decided to get baptized on his deathbed, converting him to a Christian just minutes before his passing- but his decision changed the fate of Christianity forever. In the Roman Empire, the only option was the belief in the Greek-Roman Gods, such as Apollo. Those who believed in Christianity were victimized for their beliefs, often killed, and were considered martyrs. However, after Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, it inspired more people to believe in Jesus Christ. Christianity became the foundation for Byzantine culture, and established order and control in the empire until its collapse in the 15th century.
The first clear instance where Christianity is seen in Constantine's life is during his campaign against Maxentius. In the spring of 311, when Constantine was marching to Rome to battle against Maxentius, he saw a vision in the sky, a bright cross along with the words "by this sign conquer." Later that night, he had a dream in which God told him to use that sign as a safeguard to use in all of his future battles. Constantine awoke and immediately ordered his troops to inscribe the chi-rho, the sign he saw a combination of the Greek letters chi and rho, onto their shields (Constantine Converts to Christianity 312). Some historians have deemed it more appropriate to consider Constantine a patron of Christianity at this point rather than a convert as it appears that he is using it as a means to conquer and attributes his success to it rather being convicted and committed to Jesus Christ as a true Christian should (Legitimization Under Constantine). Meanwhile, at the same time that Constantine is having holy visions and dreams, Maxentius sought guidance and confirmation from pagan oracles and found a prophecy declaring the "the enemy of the Romans would parish." Emboldened by this prophecy, he left the defensive position of Rome and met Constantine at Milvian Bridge. Constantine was victorious despite having an army about a third of the size of Maxentius'. It is said that Maxentius' army became confused and scattered during the battle. Maxentius was drive...
Constantine also sent letters around the Roman Empire to tell them about the empire’s conversion to Christianity. By 400 A.D., Christianity became the official religion practiced by almost all Romans. Clovis was not as dedicated as Constantine was to his conversion, and his actions did not show as much dedication as Constantine’s did. Though Constantine and Clovis’ effects were the same, their commitment to Christianity differed. Constantine went far beyond the Edict of Milan, which extended indulgence of Christians during the persecution.
He funded Christian leaders and the construction of churches, some of which he dedicated to his mother. Most Christian leaders admired Constantine for the hard work he did for the church and Christian cause for the people . When he finally became emperor, he took a large Roman army east with the goal of settling the score once and for all the rebel bands that were picking and taking Rome apart. On the eve of one of the great battles, in 330 CE, Constantine saw a vision in were his mother stood by right hand of Jesus. He Said him, “If you will give me victory in this battle, then I will officially become a Christian.”
Christianity was first brought about by Jesus, who preached he was the son of God. After Jesus was hung on the cross and then resurrected one of his apostles, Paul, started the church. It first became popular in Jerusalem, and then continued to spread throughout the rest of the Middle-East, eventually reaching ...
Constantine’s conversion made him more tolerant of Christianity in Rome, allowing the Church to spread to other parts of his empire and to preach in public society. Constantine is praised as the emperor who made Christianity no longer anti-Roman. Had Constantine not converted and reformed Rome, the Church would have never been able to gain as much of a foothold in Rome and the West. His conversion ended the widespread persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire and greatly increased Christian power and influence in Rome. Additionally, his conversion contributed Roman law to the Catholic Heritage of the West, forming a basis of Western thought on law and justice. The time frame significant to Constantine and the Church stretches back to as early as Nero’s persecution in AD 64 all the way to after the death of Constantine in ca. AD 400, when paganism in Rome finally fell.
The earliest recorded text teaching Christianity has its roots buried deep within Judaism. The birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, as the Messiah, created a new ideology of worship. The Messiah is the savior for all people and of all sins. Paul carried the message of the Messiah to the Gentiles. His missionary journeys and establishment of churches enabled the spreading of the message throughout the Roman Empire. Christianity grew in acceptance; those that believed in the Messiah separated and began to worship on their own. This marked the beginning of the split of Judaism and Christianity.
After the Edict of Milan was established, towns went under a slow transformation. Although it continued to focus of urban life, many temples were slowly replaced by Christian buildings. The Emperor highly encouraged Christian art and architecture. Theodosius I, the last Roman Emperor, acknowledged Christianity as the state religion in 380. Art was no longer created secretly underground or hidden inside of churches; it could be displayed openly in front of the public. For the first time, several basilicas were built openly for Christian worship and inside those basilicas, paintings and mosaics of biblical stories were created to be viewed publicly. The Edict of Milan made the Roman Empire become a huge contributor to Christian art and architecture and it created an tremendous revolution in history.
To the Christians, Constantine was the first emperor to not only stop state led Christian persecutions altogether
As the greatest empire in the western world began to crumble one city at a time, the leader of the Roman Empire, Constantine, under pressure from external and internal sources moved the capital of Rome to Constantinople around 330 AD. The movement of the capital was after his conversion to Christianity in 312 AD, a growing religion throughout the empire despite being officially illegal. Constantine was not the devote saint that the church may speak of today, “from 312-320 Constantine was tolerant of paganism, keeping pagan gods on coins and retaining his pagan high priest title "Pontifex Maximus" in order to maintain popularity with his subjects, possibly indicating that he never understood the theology of Christianity” (Ferguson & Grupp, 1998). The first Christian Emperor claimed to have converted after a victorious battle with his brother and there are many that corroborate this story it appears highly suspicious to only promote Christian ideals and worship. Constantine was not even the Emperor that made Christianity the religion of the Roman people, but simply permitted religiou...
The mandate of Milan approved of Christianity in 313, and it became the state religion in 380. These acts ended centuries of persecution, but they also destroyed the traditional Roman values system. Christianity uprooted the polytheistic Roman religion, and gave the emperor a status, and also shifted focus away from the glory of the state and onto a sole god. Meanwhile, popes and other church leaders took a heightened role in political interests, further complicating the government. Other times the Romans persecuted the Christians because of their beliefs, which were popular among the poor.
The Roman world had been pagan, prior to the fourth century, Christians were few in number and were persecuted by the government and by pagans. But, with the advent of Constantine as emperor, who made his profession of Christianity, in the fourth century, placing Christianity on an equal footing with paganism, people of the Roman world began to accept this now popular Christianity by the hundreds of thousands. The Christians learned the heathen practice and incorporated it into their
