To help our fellow man, and to live life courageously.” (“Abraham Lincoln a Courageous Man”). Abraham Lincoln stood up for what he believed was right and attempted, with a success, to end slavery. During this time, many people in the South did not agree with him which caused chaos for Lincoln to deal with. Even with the chaos, he never wavered in his decision and continued to push for what he thought was right. Years later Lincoln’s impact was seen during the American civil rights movement. Rosa Parks, an African American women who lived in Alabama, showed major courage on a bus she was riding. “Parks is famous for her refusal on December 1, 1955 to obey bus driver James Blake’s demand that she relinquish her seat to a white man.” (“Rosa Parks Biography”). This showed courage because the other three people that were sitting with her decided to just listen to the bus driver instead of standing up for something that they believe in. During this time period, Rosa Parks was known as “The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement”. Rosa Parks died on October 25, 2005 at age 92. Rosa parks felt that everyone should be free and everyone should have the same rights. Rosa Parks was able to read when she was little because she was born 50 years after slavery, in 1913. Her mother taught her to read when she was very little because she was a teacher (Interview with Rosa Parks). The school she went to was very strict about the way things were done. For example:

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white male who demanded she seat herself in the ‘appropriate colored’ space located at the back of the bus for black men and women. Her defiance to the law that day became known to the world.

There were cases of flogging, peonage, murder, and rape. We didn't seem to have too many successes. It was more a matter of trying to challenge the powers that be, and to let it be known that we did not wish to continue being second-class citizens." ...ledge concerning her struggle. So long, I only knew of the boycott for the history books point of view, but this book broadens my awareness. People in the 1950’s were not treated with the respect they are today. Thus, Martin Luther King’s dream of freedom and equality for mankind did transpire, however it came its limitations. One brave individual who stands out during these unjust times of segregation is Rosa Parks. With her audacious actions and complete serenity, she sparked a nation. There are many different ways to teach Rosa Parks. This video did an excellent job of keeping my attention and showing me not just telling me what Rosa Parks did for the civil rights movement. A way I could teach Rosa Parks is to put the students into her shoes. Help them understand how brave she was to take the actions she did. I could have the students do a research paper on what Rosa Parks did before she took the actions she did.
She once declared “All I felt was tired, tired of being pushed around. Tired of seeing bad treatment and disrespect of children, women and men just because of the color of their skin” (Heckler-Feltz, 1). The law was unfair, and she fought back and not let herself get arrested.

Her actions inspired other African Americans to rally for equality.” This event in
