Would you kill yourself because someone you loved died? Romeo and Juliet would. The Capulets and Montagues live in Verona, Italy. They have had a feud as long as they can remember. Romeo was desperately trying to get over Rosaline; therefore, he went to a party. At the party Romeo met Juliet. It was love at first sight. How can two people deeply in love be together if they’re families hate each other? Romeo and Juliet are to blame because they overreact, are impulsive, and are blinded by their own love.
First, Romeo and Juliet overreact throughout the whole book. They overreact when they got married in a day. Even if they were in love they didn’t need to marry so fast. The only person that knew about their marriage was Friar Lawrence, and he was their priest. When, Romeo and Juliet got married, they didn’t even know eachother. Also, Romeo and Juliet kill themselves because they thought they other one was dead. Both of them could have had such a happy and long life without Romeo or Juliet. They are too young, immature, and blow everything out of proportion. Next, Romeo and Juliet are very impulsive. Romeo is impulsive when he kills Tybalt. When Romeo and Tybalt get into a fight, Tybalt doesn’t know Romeo married his cousin, and Romeo kills him anyway. Romeo at first won’t fight Tybalt, but when Tybalt kills Mercutio Romeo gets angry. He couldn’t stop himself and acted without thinking. Also, Juliet was impulsive when she stabs herself. When Juliet wakes up from her sleeping potion and sees Romeo dead beside her, she doesn’t think. She believes that the only way to get rid of her deep pain and sadness for Romeo’s death is to kill herself. “Of course, this could be due to Juliet’s youth- and to Romeo’s impulse disorder. But these are traits of the young lovers themselves, not of their families or the barriers their last names create.” (Peele) This quote shows that no one is to blame but themselves. The quote says that Romeo is very impulsive and Juliet is just young. Some people may blame Friar Lawrence for Romeo and Juliets death. However, Friar Lawrence did not make Romeo and Juliet commit suicide. He was trying to help them and his plan went wrong because Romeo didn’t get the message. Last, Romeo and Juliet are blinded by their own love.
They both think that they can’t be with anyone else in the world. They should both take a step back and realize their situation is not worth killing themselves over. They could be perfectly happy with another person. “And he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to garish sun.” (III, ii, 25-27) This quote shows that Juliet is very obsessed with Romeo. She believes that Romeo is a perfect person. Even when Romeo kills her cousin, Tybalt, she doesn’t think he was in the wrong. “Armed with his tendency for complete and utter infatuation, Romeo finds Juliet, a teenage virgin whose father is forcing her to marry an older man she wants nothing to do with.” (Peele) This quote shows that Romeo is the type of person that is obsessive. He can’t help it because it is his
personality. Romeo and Juliet are to blame for their own death. They overreact to many things throughout the book. Romeo and Juliet are impulsive and act without thinking. Last, they are blinded by their own love for eachother. Some people might see the story of Romeo and Juliet as an epic love story; however, I see it as a tragic suicide. The book is based off Romeo and Juliet’s bad decisions. With Romeo’s personality flaws and Juliet’s youth it was a recipe for disaster from the start.
The reader realizes this when the prologue states, “Two households, both alike in dignity/ In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, / From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,/ Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean./ From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/ A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life” (I 1-6). This translates to say two families have been rivals for many years. Romeo and Juliet are two from separate rivaling families that fall in love. The reader can acknowledge that these two individuals meet one another due to fate. However, they know that because of their parents’ hatred of each other, they can never be together. “My only love sprung from my only hate!/ Too early seen unknown, and known too late!/ Prodigious birth of love it is to me,/ That I must love a loathed enemy” (I v138-140). A decision is made that the only way to be happy is to take their lives. As soon as the play begins, the audience can foresee a tragic ending because of the language used.

Romeo and Juliet is known by many as a love story, but what if it’s not a love story but a story of obsession and desperation. Romeo is from the Montague family, and Juliet is from the Capulet family. The two families have been feuding for many, many years. In this story, Romeo and Juliet become obsessed with the feeling of being in love. They will go to extremes to be together, such extremes as death.
Even though they were not allowed to be together, it didn't mean that they had to kill themselves. They thought in that moment that the best idea for them was to run away. They didn't tell anyone and pretended like nothing was going on. Just because Romeo was banished and Juliet was a Capulet meant that they could not see each other, but if they wanted to they could have tried to think of a better idea than running away. They might have to run away in the future if they want to be together but they did not really give anyone a chance to even think about the idea and give it a chance. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the two lovers make their own personal choices that impact both their lives in a very tragic way. While the readers are hoping that Romeo and Juliet will end up together, their impulsive behaviors lead to death. Juliet's impulsive behavior to fake her own death without clarification that Romeo had received the friar's letter caused Romeo to kill himself.
In the short span of less than a week, Romeo has gone from being lovesick over a girl named Rosaline to falling deeply in love with Juliet, who also loved him back. They got married, and not even a day after, Romeo was banished from Verona and Juliet's parents had made wedding plans for Juliet to marry the county Paris. It would be quite accurate to state that the story of Romeo and Juliet's lives were a warning of the hastiness of youth and adults and where rushed decisions could lead, as the two star-crossed lovers eventually both took their own lives; resulting in grief in both households, and a future warning to all to think decisions through, as one wrong choice could cause harm, bloodshed, and even the end of lives.
Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story about a pair of star-crossed lovers whose demises were unexpected to most. However, their deaths were a result of their impulsiveness. It caused their problematic marriage, Romeo’s preventable death, as well as Juliet’s preventable death.
In the course of the play, Romeo and Juliet immediately fall in love. Also, they know they are meant for each other and therefore decide to get married. After this marriage, there was a brief moment in time where everything was perfect. They are married, in love and there is nothing stopping them from being together. This however quickly changes after a fight that leads to death. Once Romeo is banished from Verona for the penalty of murder, love grows tremendously between the couple and drives the need to be together. The marriage between Romeo and Juliet is hidden from their parents, so Montague decides to arrange a marriage between her and Paris. With all the conflict arising between Juliet’s family, Friar Lawrence creates a plan that unfortunately does not succeed. His plan for Juliet is to tell her father she will marry Paris then go to bed with no one, not even the nurse. After, she will drink a potion to make her seem dead for forty two hours and then have a messenger tell Romeo about it. He will have her put in a vault to wait for Friar to bring her out so she and Romeo can elope. The plan was perfect until tragedy occurs, Benvolio had seen Juliet dead and immediately tells Romeo about it. The result is Romeo and Juliet murdering themselves and the play had a tragic ending. Additionally, the couple was in a high risk environment.They were both being forced out of their homes for different reasons and felt that life without the other was hopeless. Just as the Friar says in the beginning of the Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet, “Wisely and slowly, they stumble that run fast.” (II.iii.94). this was a sign of foreshadowing for for the death of the lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Even though fate was a factor that had contributed to a tragic end, there was also personal choice involved, and ultimately, the story may have had a different ending if it weren’t for the flaws of the lovers and their inability to have a grip on reality in dire circumstances. Over the course of the play, the lovers from the conflicting households have not matured and remain rather static in development. Furthermore, in this tragedy, the only son of the montages remains rather childlike, Juliet still seems immature and their relationship over all seems more like a play act on lover rather then something mature and sustainable. Overall, from start to finish, Romeo and Juliet were living in the moment, being absurd and silly rather then focusing on the future and trying to work problems out effectively.
Romeo and Juliet choose their own actions through their judgments, which were caused by their belief of everlasting love. Due to their unsound and absurd attitudes, both characters are dazed by love in a puerile manner. The relationship they created was actually built on lust and desperation. Firstly, Romeo is the first character whom shows immature love in the story as a whole. Once Capulet’s party is over, Romeo’s attitude leads him to jump over the wall to Juliet’s house and exclaim to her,” And what love can do, that dares love attempt./Therefore thy kinsmen are no stop to me”(2.2.68-9). The effect of love caused Romeo to not pay attention to the consequences of jumping over the wall and talking to the daughter of his enemy. If Romeo and Juliet’s parents had been more understanding, they wouldn’t be dead. Romeo and Juliet should be blamed for their own death. Romeo expresses grief to Benvolio over the loss of his love Rosaline, “Griefs of mine lie heavy in my breast”, and just hours later, he falls for Juliet and so does she. This shows they were too impulsive in their relationship.
In Conclusion, Romeo and Juliet both took many risks throughout the play. They both caused 4 other deaths and their deaths as well. There were many times in the play were Romeo and Juliet’s deaths could have been prevented. Mercutions persuasion towards Romeo, Friars bad decision to lead the marriage, and lastly the murder of Tybalt. When Romeo and Juliet got married, they both thought they would be together for eternity. The only thing that was in between them being together for so long was both of their families because the two families were un liked by each other.
A young girl, like Juliet can be mesmerized by the idea of love and have the thought in her head that love is all that matters. The intensity of love in both of these texts becomes a dangerous and violent thing. Juliet goes through physical pain stabbing herself so she could be with Romeo after his death. Juliet looks at death as a positive thing because it allows her to be with Romeo again. Before she kills herself she says, “O, happy dagger, this is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die” (Shakespeare V.iii.174-175). In most romantic tales, violence is the last thing you would think of when it comes to love, but it would be different in this play. In both of these texts we see love destroy people mentally and physically; instead of bring happiness to their lives. When Juliet notices that Romeo drank poison and had killed himself, she was not only upset about his death but also seemed more upset that he “left no friendly drop to help me after! I will kiss thy lips. Haply some poison yet doth hang on them” (Shakespeare V.iii.168-170). This bond that seems to be unbreakable between them causes more harm than it would have if they were not together like society would want them to be.
