Rock music has advanced into the most popular forms of music with numerous amounts of branches that produced some of the most influential and successful artists throughout its 70 years of intriguing history. Rock music began in the early 1950s with the first Rock album, Rock Around the Clock, by Bill Haley. As the years passed, Rock music developed into many branches, including alternative, Metal, Rock and Roll, and Blues Rock. Many people, including; Elvis Presley, Blue Cheer, The Beetles, and the Smiths; contributed to these genres and paved the way for many of the modern bands and artist we know about today. It all started with Bill Haley, who is formally known as William John Clifton. His family was extremely musical considering his father played the banjo and the mandolin, and his mother was a classically trained pianist. When he was seven, he made a simulated guitar out of cardboard, then his parents bought him a real one. When he was fifteen he set out with his guitar on the hard road to fame and fortune. (Bill Haley and His Comets) Eventually he found a job with the “Down Homers,” a popular group during that time, but he ended up deciding that he would rather be his own boss. They continued the British invasion started by the beetles, or the phenomenon that occurred when British Rock and Pop music became popular in the US. I. First I will start by discussing the various genres that created rock music in the 50’s and 60’s.
They were the first group to heavily tour the United States and sporadically tour the rest of the world. This occurred because there was a lack of interest in them Britain. Their success was due to their manager Peter Grant. Peter was able to keep the group moving from place to place and kept the people interested in them. Peter thought that they would work every other year so they would stay in demand. While they were working on their first movie featuring them. This movie was of the group playing their music, which was called, “The Song Remains Playing.”

Most people think rock music started with Elvis Presley, but he didn’t record his first single until 1953. The first recorded song described as “Genuine Rock-and-Roll” was “Rocket ’88” by pianist Ike Turner and singer Jackie Brenston in 1951. Rock-and-Roll music in the 1950’s was described as a mixture of jazz, blues, country, and has a strong guitar, bass, and drums.
