The History, Development, and Success of Rock Music
Rock music has advanced into the most popular forms of music with numerous amounts of branches that produced some of the most influential and successful artists throughout its 70 years of intriguing history. Rock music began in the early 1950s with the first Rock album, Rock Around the Clock, by Bill Haley. As the years passed, Rock music developed into many branches, including alternative, Metal, Rock and Roll, and Blues Rock. Many people, including; Elvis Presley, Blue Cheer, The Beetles, and the Smiths; contributed to these genres and paved the way for many of the modern bands and artist we know about today. It all started with Bill Haley, who is formally known as William John Clifton. His family was extremely musical considering his father played the banjo and the mandolin, and his mother was a classically trained pianist. When he was seven, he made a simulated guitar out of cardboard, then his parents bought him a real one. When he was fifteen he set out with his guitar on the hard road to fame and fortune. (Bill Haley and His Comets) Eventually he found a job with the “Down Homers,” a popular group during that time, but he ended up deciding that he would rather be his own boss. (Bill Haley and The Saddle men) Sooner or later he founded the band, “Bill Haley and His Comets,” originally known as “Bill Haley and Haley’s Comets.” Although there is no clear beginning to rock music Bill Haley and His Comets are credited with the first Rock album, “Rock Around the Clock” Recorded in Philadelphia in 1951.This opened the gateway for many more successful rock artists that experimented with different styles and …show more content…

Elvis Presley is considered one the most influential Rock and Roll artist. He is considered the king of Rock and Roll, and had charted toping records. His controversial ideas that coincided with the civil rights movement contributed to his popularity. He later focused on Hollywood and film making after he made his most successful work. They were the first Alternative Rock band known, and they were the first indie outsider to truly achieve mainstream success on their own terms. (Simon Goddard. "The Last Rites") They were also named “the most influential artist in a 2002 poll against the beetles. Blue Cheer, like the Smiths, was the first band of a rock Genre, Metal. However, they were more than just the first Metal band. They were major influences of Blues Rock, Punk Rock, and Stoner Rock, but The Animals contributed to Blues Rock as well. They continued the British invasion started by the beetles, or the phenomenon that occurred when British Rock and Pop music became popular in the US.
