There are some secrets which do not permit themselves to be told", like the truth behind Edgar Allen Poe's death. There are many theories behind the death of Edgar Allen Poe. Some believe he died of alcoholism, or exposure to the weather. However, Poe died of rabis and we can conclude this because of his behavior. Also, there are many facts to support the theory that Poe died of rabis unlike all other theories.
Many people believe Poe died of alcoholism, however from research I believe that Poe died of rabis. "Perspiring heavily, hallucinating, and shouting at imaginary companions are results of being infected by rabis" (Michael Bentiez 187). Benitez, Poe's doctor, claimed that Poe would not drink water. He says that often rabis victums exhibit hydrophobia. Hydrophobia is the fear of water, Poe was scared to drink water because it hurt to swallow (187). Because this is a common effect of someone effected with rabis we can conclude that Poe was very likely to have rabis. Dr. Michael Benitez claims that as he spent his time at the hospital he was confused, and grew angry. It was a common thing for Poe daily until he slowly quieted down and died. Until now no one really thought they knew why.
I believe that Poe died of rabis because there is evidence up the theory. Benitez states that data published by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claim that only 34% of rabis victums in-counter an animal (190). Poe may not have had a bit mark, or so they may have thought. "The indication of rabis in humans may be as long as a year if the invocation occurs on
the hand or feet is small"(Benitez 190). Robert Benedetto claimed to have found Poe outside of a bar, but if he had been sober before the time of his death maybe he was just daised and confused because he had been attacked. Maybe he had been attacked by an animal and didn’t remember it. Bentiez claims that even though physicians knew how rabis were transmitted we didn’t know how to cure them (190). Today we are more educated in the medical field, and if we had known that he had been infected we could have possibly created a cure.
While Poe lay unconcious for several hours, he could have been bitten by an animal. Michael Benitez says that Poe was absinent of alcohol for years (190). So maybe he was unconcious on the ground because an animal attacked him but he couldn’t remember. "When Poe was found his face was pale and he was drenched in sweat" (Kenneth Silverman 185). After being exposed to an animal he could have became ill causing him to sweat,and become pale in the face. Kenneth Silverman states that he stayed unconcious until three oclock the next morning, when he then developed a tremor of the limbs. An infection could be the reason behind his limbs losing function. Poe died slowly and painfully.
From the information gathered I have concluded that Poe died of rabis. Poe had been absinent of alcohol, so couldn’t have died of alcoholism. But, Poe could have easily been infected with rabis as he was unconcious on a street corner. In conclusion, although some sccrets may not be told, the scret of Poes death lays before us. Edgar Allen Poe died of rabis.
