According to Pandora’s myth, Pandora was the first woman on Earth. Pandora’s greek name Thus meant “the one who bears all gifts”. Zeus was her creator making her a “punishment” to people. Pandora was really curious so Zeus made a box for her which obtained evil spirits and hope. In other words there are some people that says that Pandora's Box had only good things, but every thing flew away leaving only hope. Pandora’s Box affected Sal by giving hope to her in two aspects: that her mother would come back some day and, at the five last chapters where she had hope that her mother was not dead from the bus accident. In my Box I send five feelings. Fear ( I have fear of death), rage (I have anger of mistreatment), sadness ( I become sad when
Sal’s journey reflects that of a heroine; the journey helps her discover who she really is and she comes home to share what she has learned afterward. Sal explains, “When my mother had been there, I was like a mirror. If she was happy, I was happy. If she was sad, I was sad. For the first few days after she left, I felt numb, non-feeling. I didn’t know how to feel”(Creech 37). When her mother left, Sal had no reflection. She was forced to start experiencing her feelings independently. Sometimes to start feeling again, one needs to leave what is familiar to them. The journey she took healed this numbness she felt. Furthermore, her identity and feelings were given context through Phoebe’s story and shaped by her own reflections of the
The Receiver has a job that involves much pain and suffering. The job of the Receiver is to inherit memories of the past, non-utopian society, and live them out. Some memories are painful while others are pleasant. The Receiver not only suffers through painful memories, he has to suffer knowing that there
Pandora, Persephone and Helen have been chosen because their stories reflect the ongoing mythic preoccupation regarding the role of women within Greek society. It is possible to view the progression of the three as conforming to the rites de passage as described by Van Gennep in 1960 (10-11, 116 ff): We witness rites of separation, operating on two levels. First, despite their shared descent from, or creation by, the Olympian gods, they exist in the realm of mortals. Secondly, their partnerships are instigated either against or despite their will, and are marked by a concurrent development in the type of space they occupy. Rites of transition may be interpreted in the corresponding change of status that these women undergo - from daughters, virgins and legitimate spouses, to brides, wives and consorts. Finally, rites of incorporation occur once Pandora, Persephone and Helen are reintegrated into what the myths depict as a new world. This is achieved through aetiological explanations for the state of the cosmos and/or the institution of a new era of the human condition.
She essentially lets all fire and brimstone loose, which leads to a battle with Enkidu and Gilgamesh, which in turn leads to Enkidu getting the death penalty from the gods, which sends Gilgamesh off to his failed quest for immortality (shmoop). One more sentence: Ishtar is the goddess of both love and war, this shows that women have the power to be both wonderful and productive or destructive and horrible. A womans most important role in life is to bear children, and a woman who cannot bear children is seen as destructive to the population. Only a woman has the capacity to create life, and that makes her important and valuable. The one who created the earth, according to the Epic of Gilgamesh, was a goddess, a woman.
However, when Epimetheus accepted Zeus’ present, Pandora, as his wife, she “took the lid off the big jar with her hands and scattered all the miseries that spell sorrow for men. Only Hope was left there in the unbreakable container, stuck under the lip of the jar, and couldn’t fly out. “The woman clamped the lid back on the jar first” (Works and Days, line 115-119). Hesiod blamed Pandora for her curiosity that let misery and suffering escape, as well as her weakness as a woman that prevented the only good thing in the jar, Hope, from escaping. However, this was all set up by Zeus as punishment.
Zeus made her as a punishment for Prometheus going against his wishes and stealing fire for mankind in an effort to create something that would “give them an affliction in which they will all delight as they embrace their own misfortune”(Hesiod 38). As punishment for Prometheus’ actions, Zeus created Pandora, the first woman. He made a woman who from the very beginning was described as beautiful but a liar with “wily pretenses.” This basically means that she will be able to deceive man by means of her sexuality and feminine allure; she will be irresistible. After making this woman, Zeus gave her to Epimetheus who despite knowing not to take a gift from Zeus, forgot immediately after seeing her and brought her to earth where she unstopped a jar and released all of the evils of humanity including but not limited to plagues and diseases leaving only hope inside once she closed the
She was specifically told to never open the box. Since Hera gave Pandora the gift of curiosity, she couldn’t help but wonder what could be inside. She thought that anything could be in the box, maybe something she really wanted. Pandora really wanted to know, and was tempted to open the box, but knew she shouldn’t. “What inside that box seemed to her now the very secret of life, which she must look upon or die” (Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths, Page 61).
the wife of Zeus. She was the goddess of marriage and childbirth. She was also
In Greek mythology Pandora was the first woman, bestowed upon humankind by Zeus as a punishment for Prometheus' theft of fire. Entrusted with a box containing all the ills that could plague people, she opened it out of curiosity and thereby released all the evils of human life; wife of Epimetheus. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to make a mixture of earth and water and from it to create a woman as beautiful as a goddess. When she was ready, Athena adorned her and taught her how to weave, while Aphrodite endowed her with grace and passion, the Graces and Peitho garlanded her with gold ribbons and the Hours decorated her with spring flowers. Hermes, on the other hand, put malicious and lying words into her heart. Zeus called her Pandora, because she had received gifts (dora) from
According to "Greek mythology", Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus commanded Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her so he did what he was told, but he only used water and earth. The gods gave her many skills. Aphrodite gave her beauty, Apollo gave her music, Hermes gave her persuasion, and on and on. With her name, Pandora, meaning "all-gifted".
Woman was not yet made. The story (absurd enough!) is that Zeus made her, and sent her to Prometheus and his brother, to punish them for their presumptions in stealing fire from heaven; and man, for accepting the gift. The first woman was named Pandora. She was made in heaven, every god contributing something to perfect her. Aphrodite gave her beauty,Hermes persuasion, Apollo music, etc. Thus equipped, she was conveyed to earth, and presented to Epimetheus, who gladly accepted her, though cautioned by his brother to beware of Zeus and his gifts.
Echo is a character in Greek mythology. She is a mountain nymph, or spirit that is thought of as a gorgeous girl, who lived on Mount Kithairon. She was often visited by the god of the sky, Zeus. His wife, Hera, found out about this and tried to follow him so that she could catch him in his act. Echo would stop her and talk to her for awhile so that Zeus could avoid conversations about this subject with Hera. After a while, the goddess of marriage and birth realized what the sneaky nymph was doing. She cursed Echo so that all she could do was repeat the last few words that another person had just said. One day the beautiful nymph fell in love with a handsome man named Narcissus. He had been hunting with some others and soon realized that he
...ens. Her maternal qualities are the strongest in her care of this son. The myth of Prometheus is also a testament of Athena's maternal instincts. Athena created the first man out of clay and water with the help of Prometheus. She had the ability to create as well as sustain life through these myths.
Greek mythology over the past centuries has provided a means to peer into moral and ethical dilemmas, and in an age of curiosity the story of Pandora’s Box stands outs. Pandora had every thing she wanted but she was given one rule not to open a locked box, she decided she wanted to open the box anyway, and then “Horrible things flew out of the box including greed, envy, hatred, pain, disease, hunger, poverty, war, and death. All of life’s miseries had been let out into the world” http://www.greekboston.com/culture/mythology/pandoras-box/. Other than several layers of philosophical issues that collude the story the main takeaway was the decision of Pandora. Pandora’s problem wasn’t her curiosity; she didn’t know when to leave well enough a lone. We as a society have found our box, AI, the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior(merriam webster),with conscious ability. This box although it has a lock, key, and LED signs with arrows saying don’t open the intrigue ,just like pandora’s, still draws in many engineers and scientist.
Have you ever wondered why people have certain reactions? I chose chapter eight on emotions for my reflection paper because emotions are something that everyone has and feels, yet cannot always explain or react to in the way you would expect. Personally, I have never been great at responding to emotions in a way that I would not regret in the future. Thus, naturally being drawn to this chapter as a way to expand my knowledge on how to react to things more positively. I also wanted to learn why I feel a certain way after events that would not affect most people and be reassured about my feelings. Opposite to that, it is nice to see that, while not always productive, others have the same reaction habits. Overall, emotions are a complicated
