OJ Simpson was a star athlete, and a well known celebrity, and this changed not only the way he viewed himself, but the way that others perceived him, and this completely changed Simpson for the rest of his life, and had a major impact on the decisions he made. OJ Simpson was an extremely popular and well like person during his years in college and the NFL, and also starred in movies, and tv shows. While in college, Simpson’s fame grew due to his success in playing football, Jared Grimmer writes, “Simpson gained fame as a star running back for the USC Trojans, setting NCAA records and winning the Heisman trophy”. OJ Simpson was one of the top players in football, and because of this, he became extremely popular. Even after retiring from playing in the NFL, Simpson’s fame …show more content…
continued to grow, as he found other ways to stay in the spotlight, “Simpson spent time working as a sports commentator, acting, and golfing” (Grimmer).
Although football is what started Simpson’s career, he was able to find other opportunities to grow his name and brand. Simpson’s immense popularity would greatly affect how he perceived himself. Simpson had so much because of his fame, and because of this, he viewed himself as above everyone else, while speaking about Simpson’s mindset as a celebrity, Dale Archer writes, “This is when we get our first glimpse inside the mind of O.J. It’s a very simple analysis. He was an abuser of the worst kind, one with money, power and fame” Simpson believed he was above the law, and could act in any way he wanted because of his fame and power. He also thought he was more important than others around him, this is evident, when he abuses his wife, and knows he will get away with it because he is so popular. The way Simpson perceived himself because of his celebrity status did many things to change his life. While giving his opinion on OJ Simpson’s ideas, Archer writes, “The OJ mindset
is one of an abuser coupled with that of an entitled celebrity.” Simpson thought because of his celebrity status, he wouldn’t get in trouble for doing the things he did, and found himself committing awful crimes against people close to him. Celebrities live in a world where people are always paying close attention to them, and this can influence their perception of themselves, while there are many upsides to being a celebrity, many people who are famous believe the downsides can sometimes outway the positives, Walter Leavy brings this to light when he wrote, “There are a list of things that celebrities say, make their lives less than perfect, and the price of fame comes in the form of lies, rumors, distortions, innuendo, continuous media scrutiny, rude and overly enthusiastic fans” (54). These negatives that come with being a celebrity can completely change the way a celebrity views themselves, this is true with OJ Simpson, as things like media scrutiny that he faced during his murder case, changed the way he and many others viewed himself. The fame not only affected Simpson’s perception of himself, but how others perceived him. When asked about what has changed in the past 10 years since O.J. Simpson was on trial, Charles J. Ogletree a law professor at Harvard says, “The one thing that's amazing about the Simpson case ... [is that] no one's mind has changed in a decade. The whites who thought he was guilty haven't budged an inch, and the blacks who thought he was not guilty haven't budged an inch. They both saw the same program played out on American television, and they both had very different views about it.” There was a very different perception of OJ Simpson from the American people, and this showed a racial division between people in the country, and the perception people had of him was because of his fame and his race. Even in today’s times, the perception of Simpson is divided, after his arrest many years later, statistics show that “one in four say justice has finally been served, . . . about a third of African-Americans believe the armed robbery conviction more likely indicates that the government was out to get the former football star” (The O.J. Simpson case and the public). While time has gone on, the perception of OJ Simpson has stayed the same, many white people believe he is guilty, while the black people still believe he is innocent, and his recent convictions are to get back at Simpson. These views show there were multiple ways that citizens viewed, and still view Simpson, and people were and still are very divided on the topic. Simpson continued to have trouble with the law even after he was found innocent in his trial for murder. Simpson ran into more legal trouble, while many believe he was only found innocent for murder because of his fame, there were different results the second time around, “In October 2008, O.J. Simpson was convicted on 12 counts of armed robbery and kidnapping, along with Clarence Stewart” (OJ Simpson Biography). Simpson was found guilty, and it is possible that he finally got what he deserved, but many would argue that he was targeted because he was set free in his murder case. After Simpson was on trial, and convicted of these crimes, he was sentenced up to 33 years. (OJ Simpson Biography). Simpson, who is still serving this sentence was greatly affected by his fame, and many believe if it were not for his fame, he would not have been convicted, and this proves the amount of influence Simpson had on Americans and people around the world because of his celebrity status. While fame may seem perfect, OJ Simpson is a perfect example of how fame can change a person, and how people view a person, while not even knowing them. The perception that OJ Simpson had of himself were also affected by his fame, and this had big influence on his decisions, and changed his life.

O.J Simpson should have been found guilty due to his violent actions on June 12th, 1994. There were many actions or causes that led up to his violent act. The main and most known cause of Simpson’s act was “infidelity”. Simpson’s wife Nicole Simpson had been spending too much time with a man by the name of Ronald Goldman. When O.J became suspicious, he took immediate action.
A great deal of people viewed Simpson as a role model and someone they desired to be. Not for one second did any of those people even think about the thought of a man that “has it all” being on trial for murder. When most people view celebrities like Simpson, they imagine them with no flaws, but they only observe a glimpse of the person’s life. Some would say a majority of Americans prefer watching someone else’s life than pursuing their own, some Americans would even say that they have an infatuation with celebrities.
“’He trusted me…. With my father, my reputation was solid,’” said Arthur Ashe, when he was falsely accused of destroying a cabin during a tennis competition in 1960 (Lazo 38-40). As an African American at the time, Ashe constantly faces discrimination and limited opportunities. However, despite having a more challenging childhood than his tennis playing peers, Arthur Ashe risen to become an admirable athlete and achieved his American Dream.
On June 22nd, 1994, one of the most high-profile crimes to hit the media will occur at the home of one of the most adored football players in American history. O.J. Simpson was at one time considered to play the lead role of The Terminator, but producers thought the public wouldn 't be convinced that he could be a robot on a murder spree on film. O.J. was that likable that no one could believe he could be a killer, and people today still don 't believe it.
Athletes have been abusing their spouses since sports were created, but not until the OJ Simpson trial did domestic violence become "the issue du jour." When Simpson was arrested on New Years Day for beating his wife, none of the newspapers reported it. When he pleaded no contest five months later, there was a small brief in the second page of The Los Angeles Times' Metro Section (Cart).
...this day justice has still not been served. If OJ didn’t do it then somebody did. Although some people might say that OJ has been dealt the wrath of karma, because he does indeed sit in prison for an unrelated crime.
It is evident that Jesse Owens proved to the world what no one at the time believed could be achieved. At a time when Blacks were not equal, there was no appreciation possible in the eyes of the Americans until the civil rights movement following after the cold war. Jesse Owens dealt with much more than any African American could ever imagine. Regardless of his immense achievements, Owens did not receive recognition for such important winnings until several years after the 1936 Olympics. Despite the hate that Owens received, he was able to surpass such negativity by being involved in other organizations and through this, Owens was victorious not only on the track but also as normal human being.
In college, Johnny Manziel was known as the best football player but also as a huge partier. This was a red flag for a lot of NFL organizations
When Mike Tyson became a household name, he let the fame of his career mask his world. His name became his mask. A social experiment that was enacted in the 1970s relates to certain aspects of Mike Tyson’s superiority complex. Doctor Philip Zombardo conducted an experiment where he randomly selected college students to be “prisoners” and “guards”. For no reason, after the first day the guards started getting a superiority complex. The guards wore sunglasses, as known as their masks. The guards began to abuse their powers and treat the “prisoners” harsh and cruelly. They started acting like there was going to be no consequences for their actions or for how they treat people (Zombardo). Mike Tyson adopted some of these same characteristics when he became more and more famous. Tyson was a humble man at the beginning of his career. However, things started to change when he became more famous. He started to abuse the power of his name, also known as his mask. He began to be extremely promiscuous in his sex life. Women coming towards him because of whom he was in celebrity and he used them for pleasure. He also started addictions, especially with alcohol. He became cocky and started to disregard his training because he believed he was the best at what he did and did not need to improve, no one would beat him (Toback, 2009). Mike Tyson let the power of celebrity go to his head enabling him to think there were no consequences for his actions, so it did not matter what his actions were. This can all be connected back to his self-forming action of hanging out with those boys who tried to rob him. Tyson wanted to fit in and be a part of their group. He thought that this would make him more important. This self-forming action started him on his most powerful addiction of
He embraced the negative comments about his appearance, by making it a statement about equality and acceptance, and he tried not to let the molestation charges or ruined marriages affect his life. In the end, drugs won the battle with his life, but that’s not the way we remember him. His legacy lives through his songs, music videos, and movies, which tell the story of the good he was trying to bring into the world. He brought the issues of racism and inequality out into the open for people to discuss, and he paved the way for pop artists to freely express themselves, especially through creative music videos and elaborate concerts, and freedom in lyrics. Michael Jackson will forever live on in the music industry and in the hearts of those around the world, remembered for all that he accomplished and he will continue to be an inspirational
A thirty five year old white male kidnaps and rapes two sisters, one eight years old and the other eleven. The man then brutally murders the two helpless children; letting one watch as the other one was killed. He then leaves the bloody and beaten bodies, of the innocent sisters, in the neighborhood playground. Does this man deserve to die? The death penalty is a necessary evil that has a positive effect on society today. The death penalty should be sought in cases that carry the death penalty as a form of punishment because retribution should be taken for the heinous crimes that are committed, people that commit crime or kill will do it again, and the death penalty deters crime.
because he was rich, OJ was given better privileges. If OJ had been a poor man
