It is ironic that Hollywood produced the screen adaptation of The Crucible because Hollywood experienced its own witch hunts during the Red Scare. The Crucible's message is a commentary on the dangers of hysteria and sensationalism in society and was very similar to the McCarthyism that was targeting Hollywood artists. During the 1950s Hollywood wouldn't hire actors suspected of communist support or sympathy, ruining the lives of many.
