Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, significantly used visual rhetoric to persuade the colonies to unite together with his first political cartoon entitled, “Join, or Die,” which was published in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754. Benjamin Franklin used his credibility to establish a well-crafted rhetorical illustration, in which its symbolization, initials, and caption all play an active role in the ground breaking drawing, which changed the minds of colonists towards the pursuit of freedom that is exercised today.
In conclusion, even though the Nazi political party was known for their constant dependence on advertising, throughout the World War II and all history this king of propaganda has been no stranger to any type of government. Its power should never be underestimated since it has the ability to be used as a weapon of political warfare and determine the magnitude of the sovereignty of a particular government, in other words, it can make or break a social movement. Since their invention, political cartoons have provided for an interesting perspective on politicians and their actions. This is certainly true in the case of Theodore Roosevelt, as his portrayal in these cartoons mimicked the stages of his career. From his rise to fame as a Rough Rider to his “Big Stick” foreign policy to his demise and failed attempt at a third term, Roosevelt’s public image could always be monitored by looking in the local paper.

When a person sees a new advertisement or commercial for their favorite shoe company, they immediately want to go and check out their latest designs. Similarly, propaganda uses different sources of media to encourage people to buy a certain item that will benefit their country or an organization. Propaganda was used in World War II to encourage citizens to buy certain tools or participate in certain events to help the soldiers fighting. This technique attempts to persuade the target audience to take a course of action, while reinforcing their natural desire to be on the winning side. The way my propaganda poster does this is by boldly stating “Boys, time to sink their hopes: Fight with the Crown!!”. The feeling of “it’s time to take action” excites many, and this creates the understanding that many boys would be ready and eager to enlist to fight against the Germans who thought the Americans were weak. The lineup of soldiers at the bottom of the paper creates this sort of illusion that many soldiers have already enlisted and are simply waiting for “you” (whoever views the poster). During his young adult years, Fairey “realized his desire and interest in the street art culture and graffiti movement” while he was working in a skate shop as a part-time job. To begin, poster has Bugs Bunny in the bottom right hand corner saying, “Build your own Victory Garden.” This allows the person reading the poster know the specific action that must be made to help the war effort. In the corner opposite of Bugs Bunny, he planted his own Victory Garden to help provide carrots for himself so he did not have to go and buy carrots.
