The dawn of the twentieth century saw a period of rapid industrial growth and new inventions. One of the most notable inventors of the time was Henry Ford. Not only was his approach to the automobile a major change, his ideas regarding industrial production, worker pay, and the social impact of work on Americans were revolutionary and had long lasting impact.
Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863. He grew up on a small farm in Greenfield Township, Michigan. As a young boy he was known to take apart toys he owned and put them back together. At a young age, Henry Ford had already started a small business fixing his friends and neighbors time pieces. Ford left home at the age of sixteen to pursue an apprenticeship as a machinist in Detroit and later learned how to operate and repair steam engines. (Ford Model T) The first car Ford developed was called the Ford Quadricycle. The Ford Quadricycle was just a prototype and only sat two people. It was very small and did not have a steering wheel; instead it had a large hand crank to turn it. The Quadricycle’s top speed was also only twenty miles per hour and had only a two-cylinder engine (Henry Ford Biography). Ford was very unhappy with the quality and the excessive price of his early automobiles. The Ford model T was produced from October 1, 1908, to May 26, 1927. This was the first car that was mass-produced. The engine was a 2.9L with a 2-speed transmission, 3 if reverse is included. The front axle was created by a single piece of vanadium steel which was drop forged. This vehicle was assembled by hand and required 84 different areas of skill (“Ford Model T”).
