The Greek, Roman, and medieval periods have contributed significantly to the foundation of Western civilization. The Greek had their leadership in different fields such as art, architecture, literature, and philosophy. Along with that, despite borrowing and adapting many of the Greek’s cultures, the Roman were also strong in literature, government, and philosophy. These periods has contributed significantly to the modern idea of “Western civilization,” while also having some aspects that were discontinued and have been discarded. While discussing some of the important contributions such as literature, philosophy, government, and sports, I will also be discussing some of the aspects that were left behind. As Burger had mentioned in his book, one of the clearest and earliest kind of agon is athletic contests, through “wrestling, boxing, running, archery, etc…” (Burger 40). As earliest as the eighth century BC, as explained by Burger, the Greeks had established a festival, in which we famously known as the Olympics. We can definitely see their legacy exemplified in the modern-day Olympics. Unfortunately, the Olympic during the time of the Greeks were events where only men from all over the Greek world could compete. The Olympics that is held today is inclusive, in which it is open to both men and women from all around the world who is qualified to compete. In addition, the current Olympics has a variety of competitions, which encourages a high participation rate of competitors. The Greek’s emphasis on the importance of admiring successful athletes is also an aspect that is still prevalent today. In today’s society, we especially praise those who are skilled and talented, and we spend hundreds of millions to host these athletic games/events. Not only that, people are willing to pay large amount of money to watch people compete and to represent their countries. Burger had also mentioned that the Greeks held little attraction to team sports, which is opposite from today’s society. I believe that team sports and being a “team player” is a strong aspect …show more content…
During the emergence of Graeco-Roman civilization, the Roman interaction with the Greeks accelerated, which influenced them to start writing much more of history, epic, and lyric poetry. As said by Burger, “like those earlier historians (Herodotus and Thucydides), Roman historians took as their primary subjects war and politics, which further set the mold for history writing in the West for centuries” (Burger 104). Through literature, although the Roman found inspirations in the many works of the Greeks, they also pushed their own themes and ideas. For example, one of the Roman greatest poet was Vergil. Burger mentioned that Vergil’s reputation lasted for centuries and even before one of his greatest work called the Aeneid was completed, the work was expected to be an epic with the same standing among the Romans that Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey had among the Greeks. The Aeneid is Vergil's longest poem, which took him 11 years to write. The epic poem was about Aeneas, a Trojan hero; a warrior who will lead his people to safety, found a new Trojan state, and establish order in his and his countrymen's lives. Throughout history, we can see the influence and signs of similar literature in which writers would create their own narratives about heroic figures. Although the emergence of epics
To start off there was no form of time tracking; clocks did not exist at this time. Specific dates during this age are still questioned. Major events that happened whose dates are roughly known are the long-term events. Examples of these events are: frequent famines and the Bubonic Plague (Black Death) epidemic.
Athletics were an expression of the philosophical, religious and civic values that were at the very heart of Greek culture. In the world of the ancient Greeks, well-educated individuals were expected to be balanced mentally, spiritually, and physically (http://www.mediaconcero.com/olympic/olympia/ideal_o.php, September 27, 2004). It was felt that athletics aided in the creation of such an individual. Athletic events during this period were not simply displays of physical prowess, but an integration of the facets of Greek culture.
Since 776 BCE, the Olympics have been a way for people of different cultures to come together and compete in friendly competition. In 1892 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, although it had been over a thousand years since the last game it still had brought together an assortment of different religions and ethnic groups together. Many factors shaping the Olympic Games reflect the changes that have taken place in our world since the last game in 393 CE in Greece such changes include woman’s suffrage, global economy, world wars, and proving competency.
It is always important to look to the past in order to move towards the future. This was done in the formation of Western Society, and more specifically the formation of American society. The Greek culture served as a frame of reference for many aspects of Western life including government, architecture, math and the arts. Ancient Greek culture served as a very broad base for our society to be built upon.
Western Europe. But how did this western way of life come to be? Their are many different
...s' immediate and lasting success was due to his having found an answer to the spiritual needs of his time. In the vision of Rome, he presented an ideal strong enough to win the devotion of his contemporaries, and in his belief in sacrifice and suffering he prepared the way across the centuries to those like Marcus Aurelius who asked that men should live and die for an ideal city greater and more truly universal than Rome. Once Vergilius had opened up a new vision of human worth and recast the heroic ideal in a new mold, he set an example that later poets could not but follow. We might not accept his interpretation of human destiny in all its details, but we might feel that he had marked out the main lines for epic poetry and that any new heroic ideal must take account of what 'he' says and does.
... between Aeneas and the Homeric heroes, given an account of the historical and mythological background of Rome and demonstrated that the Roman way of life is necessarily more structured and community oriented than the Homeric Greek way of life. Virgil wrote The Aeneid as an ode to the greatness of Rome, we could imagine that as he wrote it he was in constant competition with Homer because The Aeneid was a proclamation of greatness for the Romans as the Homeric epics were for the Greeks. But Virgil took advantage of the flaws that the Homeric Heroes had and gave the corresponding virtues to Aeneas thus ensuring Aeneas' superiority and consequently Rome's superiority.
The ancient Greeks and Romans made a variety of contributions to western civilization in the field of literature. Both of these ancient cultures produced a variety of literary works which have persevered the test of time and continue to be studied today. One of the biggest contributions of the ancient Greeks to literature came from an author, who still relatively little is known about, Homer. Homer, believed by many to have been blind, is credited with the authorship of two of ancient Greece’s most famous epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey. These two epic poems chronicle the final days of the Trojan War and the epic struggle Odysseus underwent on his sea voyage back to his home after the tragic war. These two epics have had a profound impact on western literature and continue to influence literary scholars and authors to this day. The following excerpt from Bio descries the impact of these ancient poems, “The Iliad and The Odyssey have provided not only seeds but fertilizer for almost all the other arts and sciences in Wester...
Virgil’s Aeneid, tells the story of the founding of Rome. It follows the last of the Trojan’s who escaped the fate of Troy. Troy eventually falls following Homer’s The Iliad, and Virgil continues the story of their people. The Trojans are not, however, the only similarities between the two books.

Between 800 B.C. to 500 B.C an advanced society was founded. It was made up of many small independent city-states who became larger and more connected. “Emigration was one way to relieve some of this tension. Land was the most important source of wealth in the city-states; it was also, obviously, in finite supply. The pressure of population growth pushed many men away from their home poleis and into sparsely populated areas around Greece and the Aegean.”
There are many different ways that modern cultures in the west have been impacted and built upon, but there are two ancient cultures that were the most influential. The Greek and Roman cultures helped shape Western Civilization in many ways. Both were very important factors in the development of Western culture. The Greeks contributed through art, architecture, government, philosophy, education, and science. The Romans contributed through language, engineering, law, and government.
Modern Day Olympics are a huge tradition that sweeps the screens of televisions across the world. Competitors take the arena with uniforms that dawn their countries colors and designs that are meant to resemble their designated flag. For months the news is centered around the games; the preparation, the athletes, and of course the competition. Countries aren 't obsessed, they are inspired and full of pride seeing athletes from their country compete and show their incredible skill. This tradition dates back to ancient Greece where the games began. Tony Perrottet writes about the traditions of the ancient game in his book The Naked Olympics.
Greeks had used writing since c. 1400 BC, but it was not until the late 8th century BC that their literature was first written down. Greek literature began in Ionia with the brilliant epics of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey. These mature products of a long tradition of oral poetry brought together a vast body of divine and heroic myths and sagas that served as a foundation for much subsequent Greek literature. The epic view of humankind had a lasting influence on Greek thought; indeed, it has been said that later Greek literature is but a series of footnotes to Homer.
