The word renaissance is the French word meaning rebirth. It’s used to describe European history because of the changes between the 14th and 16th century, which were inspired by the art and intelligence of Ancient Greece and Rome. (Wiliam, S. A, n.d.) Humanism means a field studying human behavior and creations. During the Renaissance, humanism became an important driving force behind the much socio-cultural behavior, and therefore was a major influence on art and artistic production. Donatello revived the contrapposto stance in his work. Contrapposto has been used by many Greek and Roman sculptors, dating back to the classical period of Greek art. The Renaissance, spanning from about the fourteenth century to the seventeenth century, was an age of great change for Europe in terms of culture, literature, art, and music.
The word "Renaissance" means rebirth and refers to the 15th Century, between the years 1350 and 1600 (Greene Malvasi, par. 1). At this time, there were many changes being undergone, and one of the most important changes was the reappearance of cities, which influenced many aspects of life, including the structure of the family (Greene Malvasi, par. 1).
The Renaissance period of history occurred during the 15th and 16th centuries. Renaissance in its basic definition means rebirth. According to Merriam Webster, renaissance formally means, “a movement or period of vigorous artistic and intellectual activity” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary). Renaissance is the title given to the period of great change in music and art. The Renaissance period ushered in a culture of music that the public could enjoy. Most importantly it was a period that encouraged musicians and composers to create music and take risks with voices, instruments and notes.
During the renaissance, there was a renewed interest in the arts, and the traditional views of society came into question. People began to explore the power of the human mind. A term often used to describe the increasing interest in the powers of the human mind is humanism. Generally, humanism stresses the individual's creative, reasoning, and aesthetic powers. However, during the Renaissance, individual ideas about humanism differed.
Donatello was among the first sculptors and influential human beings of the Renaissance period. The Renaissance had begun around 1350 and Donatello became known about 58 years later in 1408. Donatello’s style was very unique for its time period and showed innovation and extraordinary skill. He built a foundation for the upcoming sculptors in the next 300 years and his actions will not go unnoticed. The pieces that had shown his talent and that were also most influential among the Renaissance were David, Gattamelata, and Saint Mark.
The second period (1425-43) is generally characterized by a reliance on the models and principles of the sculpture of antiquity. From 1425 to 1435 Donatello worked with the Florentine sculptor and architect Michelozzo on a number of projects, including the monument to Bartolomeo Aragazzi (Cathedral of Montepulciano). In their joint work Michelozzo executed the architectural designs and also helped in the making of the bronze castings; Donatello executed most of the statues. From 1430 to 1433 Donatello spent periods in Rome, where he created a number of works, notably the ciborium in the sacristy of the Basilica of Saint Peter, decorated with the reliefs Worshiping Angels and Burial of Christ. It was in Florence, however, that he created the most noted work of this period-the bronze David (circa 1430-35, Bargello), the first nude statue of the Renaissance.
The Renaissance is recognized as the rebirth of many studies manly found in Europe. It was a revival and rediscovery of arts and literature, the emergence of new scientific theories, philosophers, beginning of unfamiliar religions and writers who had the power to change future societies. I believe that the Renaissance in Europe was a revolution represented by the many great thinkers and artists who were able to make this time period significant.
The word Renaissance in French implies the notion of “rebirth” or “reformation “ This period within the context of history was characterized as the period of European Civilization immediately following the era of the middle ages. This period mostly relates to a large extent, the growth and propagative phenomena of artistic and intellectual erudition, presently used by artistic scholars and philosophers decipher and recover ancient learning as well as standards of Greece and Rome. The Renaissance era to many transcended beyond a period of simply intellectual movement, it was to them equally a period of cultural rediscovery which imparted some sort of deeper understanding making it one of the most significant eras in universal history. Believed to have been restricted to Italy, the Renaissance era occurred during the late 15th century, this great movement made an advanced and significant difference in the world we have come to know today as well as the world of the past. The Renaissance era is significant not just simply because it is one of the world’s most known events, but because it is a movement that has benefited and contributed intellectual developments to today’s notion of western civilization.
The Renaissance time period started in the late 14th century and it lasted all through the 16th century. It all started in the late Middle ages throughout Italy (http://fashionhistory.net) taking at least one-hundred years before it reached the Northern Alps. This was also the period where the word “European” was put in use and understood by other places, and the word “Renascrere” originated from the Italian word “Renascrere” and it meant to be re-born. The word Renascrere fitted perfectly to this age due to the fact that many had intellectual pursuits and creative energy was re-born (www.richeast.org). Donato di Niccaló di Betto Bardi, also known as Donatello, was an Italian Renaissance artists and sculptor born in 1386 in Florence, Italy. He is arguably one of the greatest master sculptors of the 15th century. His ability to immortalize human expression through his art put him in a league of his own. In Florence Donatello was taught the basics of sculpting and early on he was an apprentice to Lorenzo Ghiberti. Donatello creatively carved sculptures out of stone, wood and bronze; giving life to the raw materials as he created. Donatello died at the age of 80 years old, but he left behind a legacy of sculptures for the coming generations to admire and enjoy. I will outline several of the masters more notable pieces; choosing selections from his entire sculpting career.
The Renaissance was known rebirth of learning that contributed to the exploration of new forms of artwork and literature(pg.37). The rebirth took place in the middle ages , this is recently after the plague had passed and people want to now celebrate life because the had survived a massive epidemic(pg.37). This is the time in history where people started to question the church and all of there beliefs and Artist discover a new way to add detail to the art work and writing has taken on a life of it's own. these event greatly impacted how Europe was seen to themselves and the rest of the world(pg.37).
The Renaissance is a period of time where interest in art was rediscovered, a dark period where Europeans sought after a new life, “a cultural rebirth, a renaissance”. That is where the meaning of Renaissance came from and it means ‘rebirth’ or ‘awakening’.
The Renaissance was a period of enlightenment in Europe that lasted from 1350 to 1648. During this time Europe went through a period of awakening, meaning that everyone was eager to learn more about life, the universe, arts, humanities, science, and more. During this period there were many advancements in society, technology, and education. The progress that occurred during this time solidified the foundation for modern Europe.

According to Encyclopedia.com humanism is, “ a philosophical and literary movement in which man and his capabilities are the central concern.” While this simple definition certainly does convey the essence of the movement, it does no justice to the whirlwind of artistic and intellectual inspiration stirred up by it. There are many forms of humanistic philosophy in today’s society, but the origin of this school of thought traces its roots back to the days of the scholars of ancient Greece and Rome. It was the revival of and renewed interest in Greco-Roman culture around (during the western transition from medieval to early modern culture) that marked the beginning of the Early Renaissance. The humanists believed that the Greek and Latin classics contained all the lessons one needed to lead a moral and effective life. It was the profound respect for nature and scientific knowledge and of course the reevaluation of classical thought, literature, and art that gave the Renaissance its distinctively secular stamp. Many accomplished artists and intellectuals studied during the roughly 200 year period of the Renaissance, and while some are more recognized than others, it is their combined wisdom that created many of foundations on which modern society is based.
