Color is a part of everyone's life, we are surrounded by different colors every moment. Because of this, we associate feelings and emotions towards certain colors. Certain cultures, color is a way to represent their belies and values. Cultures often associate different significance to different colors. The same color can have two very different meanings. This is because people from different cultures have different preferences over color.
Yellow is considered to be the brightest color to the human eye. It is a cheerful energetic color. In the Chinese culture, yellow is associated with power and royalty. Although, yellow is a bright cheerful color, as it starts to darken it, however, quickly becomes a dirty and unpleasant color. In American culture, the color yellow can be associated with cowardly actions and sickness.
Since ancient times, the color yellow has been considered to be a prominent color in the Asian culture. The color yellow is associated with royalty and is thus considered sacred and imperial. This association dates back to a time around five thousand years ago where Chinese society worshiped a king by the name of Taoism, Huang Di or Huang Ti nicknamed “The Yellow Emperor”, who is considered to be the earliest descendent of the Chinese race. “The Yellow Emperor” received this name “because his army tribe honored the value of the ‘Yellow Earth’ which was the symbol of farming and the ‘Yellow River’ of the central land (China).”. (Symbolism of Colours). At the end of his life, a yellow dragon is said to have appeared and carried him off to the heavens by invitation of the gods. Objects that I once admired only for their aesthetic value became rich historical documents detailing everything from trade routes, to trends in religion.

Orange signifies life and ensures that Pi lives to tell his story. Throughout the course of events, the orange tiger aboard the lifeboat drives Pi to fight for his life. In contrast, the fading yellow color in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story The Yellow Wallpaper steers the woman further into mental hysteria. Rather than leading to salvation, the aging yellow embodies her illness and leads to her ultimate demise. Whether a color provides positive or negative thoughts and emotions, any piece of literature remains incomplete without splashes of color throughout the text.
Toni Morrison's Beloved makes one ponder the essence of life and death. It is a novel that can challenge the brain, and change an opinion about the supernatural. One of the biggest symbols throughout the novel would be colors. Colors such as pink, red, and orange are mentioned on numerous occasions throughout the novel.
Colors, are something to be determine, not just colors, they mean many things depending on the way people analyze them. Colors are important in life, not only in life but also in books. One book that really describes that is The Great Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, colors represent many different things. One of the major colors are yellow and gold. In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald describes these colors and associates them with different things. For example, gold represents real wealth and yellow represents fake gold. Fitzgerald associates colors with different things by really describing them in depth. For example, the green light at Daisy’s is just a green light, but Fitzgerald made it so that it would represent much more than that and that is what made The Great Gatsby such a great novel. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald associates yellow and gold in depth with different things. In life people sometimes make bad decisions and do bad things to gain money. Very similar to the novel, where Jay Gatsby gains money from bad ways, while he could have gained it from good ways.

If an artist is trying to express sorrow or death he often uses blacks blues, and grays basically he uses dreary colors. Without one word, a driver approaching a red traffic light knows to stop. Colors are representative of many things. In his novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses color symbolism throughout as a major device in thematic and character development. He uses colors to symbolize the many different intangible ideas in the book. Throughout the book characters, places, and objects are given "life" by colors, especially the more prominent ones.
Why are colours important when trying to symbolize what is taking place in the mind of the setting and the characters of literature? Tennessee Williams have once said “ Symbols are nothing but the natural of drama the purest languages of play.” Tennessee William has exactly used symbolism and colour quite effectively in his play A Streetcar Named Desire. An impressive story about fading southern belle Blanche Dubois and her failure into insanity. A Streetcar Named Desire consists many symbolism and knowledgeable use of colour. This helps the audience to connect scenes and events to the themes and issues that Williams presents within the play, just as desire and death, and the conflict between the past and present of America. The significance of colours is a central theme in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire; the author uses colours to reflect states of mind, make further commentary on particular characters, and what sorts of things specific colours represent.
Though most works of art have some underlying, deeper meaning attached to them, our first impression of their significance comes through our initial visual interpretation. When we first view a painting or a statue or other piece of art, we notice first the visual details – its size, its medium, its color, and its condition, for example – before we begin to ponder its greater significance. Indeed, these visual clues are just as important as any other interpretation or meaning of a work, for they allow us to understand just what that deeper meaning is. The expression on a statue’s face tells us the emotion and message that the artist is trying to convey. Its color, too, can provide clues: darker or lighter colors can play a role in how we judge a piece of art. The type of lines used in a piece can send different messages. A sculpture, for example, may have been carved with hard, rough lines or it may have been carved with smoother, more flowing lines that portray a kind of gentleness.
Whether the color being symbolized contradicts their lifestyle or correlatively fits the characters lifestyle. After reading Tenesse Williams's literature we can conclude he uses the symbolism of color to emphasize certain atmospheres and characteristic features of places or things in his literature. The author also uses color in objects in his literature as well to symbolize their meaning in the story. By doing so he contrasts the characters personal traits and lifestyles. Which creates a more clear and better visual for the reader. The characters being symbolized by color is what the author thought fit that specific character. Therefore we can conclude in literature symbolism takes form of a figure of speech where an object, person, or situation has another meaning other than its literal
The Association of Black Psychologist (ABP) (2013) defines colorism as skin-color stratification. Colorism is described as “internalized racism” that is perceived to be a way of life for the group that it is accepted by (ABP 2013). Moreover, colorism is classified as a persistent problem within Black American. Colorism in the process of discriminatory privileges given to lighter-skinned individuals of color over their darker- skinned counterparts (Margret Hunter 2007). From a historical standpoint, colorism was a white constructed policy in order to create dissention among their slaves as to maintain order or obedience. Over the centuries, it seems that the original purpose of colorism remains. Why has this issue persisted? Blacks have been able to dismantle the barriers faced within the larger society of the United States. Yet, Blacks have failed to properly address the sins of the past within the ethnic group. As a consequence of this failure, colorism prevails. Through my research, I developed many questions: Is it right that this view remain? How does valuing an individual over another cause distribution to the mental health of the victims of colorism? More importantly, what are the solutions for colorism? Colorism, unfortunately, has had a persisted effect on the lives of Black Americans. It has become so internalized that one cannot differentiate between the view of ourselves that Black Americans adopted from slavery or a more personalized view developed from within the ethnicity. The consequences of this internalized view heightens the already exorbitant mental health concerns within the Black community, but the most unfortunate aspect of colorism is that there is contention on how the issue should be solved.
Color is used very effectively as a tool of symbolism in Heart of Darkness. Colors, especially black and white, are used to symbolize evil (black) and good (white). Other colors are also used, although less often than black and white. Throughout the story, people are thought to have white souls or black souls depending on their innate “goodness” or “badness” or the role they are fulfilling at the time. The color of a person’s soul is often contrasted to the color of their skin. A black- souled, white-skinned person is thought to be evil and dishonest. “I met a white man in such an unexpected elegance of getup…” (Conrad p.21). This demonstrates how a white man was not expected to be a good person. Elegance of dress was unexpected because the man was white. In comparison, a white-souled, black-skinned person is thought to be truthful and full of integrity. “An athletic black belonging to some coast tribe and educated by my poor predecessor….thought all the world of himself.” (Conrad p.45). People are described as black with hatred regardless of skin color. This is further evidence of black being used synonymously with evil. Black isn’t just used to describe evil people. “Often far away, I thought of these two, guarding the door of Darkness, knitting black wool as for a warm pall…” (Conrad p. 14.) The symbolism of black wool at the door of Darkness is clearly pointing to evil, and further supports black as evil. Heath 2 Colors other than black and white are used to describe moods and attitudes past the basic good and evil. Red signifies industry. “There was a vast amount of red - good to see at any time because one knows that some real work is done in there.” (Conrad p.13). Yellow is seen as a cowardly color. “I was going into the yellow. Dead in the center.” (Conrad p.13). Pale denotes Death. It is also used this way in the Bible, “the Pale horse and his rider Death”, Revelations 6:8. “She came forward, all in black, with a pale head, floating towards me in the dusk. She was in mourning. It was more than a year since his death…” (Conrad p. 72-73). The use of color is effective in the story for a variety of reasons. First, it is easy to understand.

In the painting the skin tones of the people who are dead is drastically lighter than those of the people who are alive. It also uses color to show the darkness of the clouds which means that there was a storm and it uses lighter colors for the sky which means that the storm has passed. The painting uses color to draw your eye to the people waving their colorful clothes around. This in return draws your eye to the spec of color on the horizon which represents a ship. On the other hand, it also draws your eye to the man who is holding a little boy toward the back of the ship with the color of what appears to be a scarf on his head. Several psychological studies conclude that the mind has adapted universal reactions to colors. While these responses are subjective depending on the region, there are general responses that exist in relation to the human population as a whole. According to journalist Sarah Marinos, color psychology professor Jill Morton’s global studies have reported that when surveyed on the significance of specific colors “black was linked to bad luck and mourning” (70). Black now encompasses strong “association(s) with impurity” (Sherman and Clore 1020). Many have come to see black as a sign of moral pollution, “not because immoral things tend to be black, but because immorality” (Sherman & Clore 1020) contaminates much like dirtiness might taint a clean mind. Prejudice against the color black has established not only its negative connotation in language, but a deep resentment within America’s roots linked to its progression into a cultural identity. Though there appear to be no longer a “scientific justification for racial classification” (Banton 1111), there is an obvious “dualism in language” (Wilson 112) which links the color with its “cultural representations” (Wilson 112), i.e. Blacks, or African Americans.
