During my last semester in high school I probed a question that has been pushing me to answer since I was young. The question of how it feels to be outside and how it relates to the human mind. Like I said in my anecdote, I’ve grown up in a separated family and never traveled much to anywhere. At those times, it was rough and hard to keep up, but now that I am older I can accomplish my questions and answer them though my abilities and curiosities. Through my last semester of high school, I’ve accomplish and explored my idea. Since I started this anthology I researched many websites and visited many places throughout Los Angeles from February to May. Over spring break, I went to San Francisco with my family. The trip was wonderful and exciting. Witnessing new areas and being outside I could gain more about how outside is important to the human mind. Part of my issue I have not been confident in my actions or even in participating in class. I’ve found that being outside I could make new friends are spark conversations with people on the bus rides. I became more confident speaking to people as I was outside. In my research on the web many studies show that being outside increases your brain's function since its always thinking between the many things you see outside your neutron spread and connect more. Thus, it can also increase creativity between school and work. Researchers from Journal of Experimental Psychology, found that taking a stroll outside can benefits people creativity and confidence (Wise). Being outside can boost people's confidence and creativity by just taking a walk near your house or driving. Since being outside can boost confidence it overalls makes life healthier. As a child going outside was something that excited you. The freedom of running through the grass or climbing the trees was something that always excited you. As times change and technology improves going outside is not a happy thought anymore. In John Stilgoe’s Outside Lies Magic and Rachel Carson’s The Sense of Wonder, they both discuss the feelings you get while going outside and the importance why we should go outside. There is a serene moment when reading John Muir “A Windstorm in the forests,” that rushed through me. Which can only be described as a rush of emotions that one might face when returning home after traveling for so long. I feel that this response is so far harder to write than I could have imagined it to be because the forest Muir is describing within his story, within the Sierra Nevada is one that I grew up with. Walking in modern society is seen as a tool to get from one place to another. However, philosophers explore the idea that walking can be much more than just a means of transportation. Walking is a catalyst for the brain it helps increase brain function subsequently forming more articulate thoughts. I’ve noticed that the surroundings in which you choose to saunter play a big role in your thought process as well. Walking home on the streets of Berkeley compared to hiking through the mountains of Tahoe, I noticed a difference in my thought process. While in the mountains I felt much more relaxed and mentally clear, compared to when I was walking to my house I felt stressed and in a rush to get home. "Nature is a setting that fits equally well a comic or morning piece." (Emerson, 388) The cave gave them the sense of relaxation and freedom to discover themselves. Some people go out into nature to disconnect and clear their mind others go to seek answers whatever it may be but it does change an individual. "The surface of the earth is soft and impressionable by the feet of men; and so with the path the mind travels." (Thoreau, 407). Some might see it as if one were running away from problems but it is more as if one were to come back to view it with clear refreshed eyes.
However, within the past few decades science has begun further exploring this concept. A 2013 study (Biel and Hanes, 2013) found that spending even just 20 minutes in a natural environment significantly reduced cortisol levels, a hormone linked to stress. Another mental health study, found elderly adults who engaged in outdoor activities were less prone to depression (Christensen, Holt, and Wilson, 2013). In terms of physical health, spending time outdoors has been proven to reduce blood pressure levels and lower heart rates (Richardson, 2013). My friends and I spent recesses writing about our idiosyncratic observations about the world we lived in and I loved every single page. I was fascinated by the fact that I would never experience the world through their lenses, or even through the lens of any other human being on this planet. Whenever I volunteer at The Grotto, I always find it enjoyable compared to volunteering at my high school due to the fact that the Grotto is surrounded by a great deal of wildlife, while on the other hand, volunteering at Centennial High seems to be bland because of it’s stuffy, enclosed, environment. Not only does nature relieve stress on the mind, but it also calms it too. For instance, when Williams writes, “Officers there report calmer behavior in solitary confinement prisoners who exercise for 40 minutes several days a week in a “blue room” where nature videos are playing, compared with those who exercise in a gym without videos” (58). This illustrates how simply seeing nature can affect the human mind, keeping some of the most aggressive, vicious, people calm. Whenever I get angry or frustrated, whether it be a game or homework, I like to go to the Lynch Wood park and lay there, listening to music.
In elementary school, I would escape to the library, face burrowing in picture books about space. Walking home with arms full of checked out books, I would pass by my parents consumed in another argument most likely about marital problems and sit in the corner of my room - door shut - to indulge my self in my own private get away. I did not check out my space books to read but instead to dream, dream about a world waiting to be explored. The pitted feeling in my stomach grew stronger as I realized it is not the basement of my childhood that I miss, it is the basement of my fraternity house where Kegs littered the floors like toys and pledges were hazed like the violent was games my youth. I found another cycle came to a close, and I found myself separated from what I had once known. The basement used to be my sanctuary, the place I could dream in. Standing just outside a basement no longer mine while still profusely sweating from the sauna, a crisp late August breeze gently cooled my body. I deeply inhaled the last moments of summer knowing full well that fleeting changes that often accompany seasonal transition were no longer of any concern to me.

The world is a magnificent place that’s full of life and new places. Places that are waiting to be walked upon and viewed by the eye’s of travelers. To make new memories and go places that is beyond the walls of reality and new pathways of life. To truly experience the wonders that the world has to offer can be expressed by the life of one single person, setting off into the world to gain a higher purpose about the world. Traveling individually enables people to broaden their minds and accumulate new ideas and new experiences both nationally and internationally. By setting off into the world a person has the ability to learn so many new things, but also find so much about themselves while in the process of traveling.
