Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel about a young,
handsome, and vain man who has his portrait painted, and impulsively wishes
that he could forever remain just as handsome as he is in the painting -- that the
painting would age instead of him. He gets his wish in a most eerie way; as, with
passing years, he becomes increasingly dissolute and evil, while the changes
that one would expect to appear on his face are reflected in the portrait instead.
What this book is about, clearly, is feelings and appearances becoming real. This
motif is echoed and re-echoed throughout the book. Early in the novel, Sir Henry
Wotten -- a cynical hedonist -- gives Dorian a book about people who tried to
experience everything, both good and evil, and Dorian decides to try it; in other
words, he models his life after a work of art. The fact that Dorian's one female
love is an actress -- a person who wears masks and pretends to be someone she
is not -- reinforces this motif. When she reveals herself to be real, his repugnance
for her is so overwhelming that it reaches out like an evil spirit and kills her;
Dorian therefore murdered Sybil as surely as he would murder Basil later on.

While Dorian learns of Pater’s philosophy from Henry he soon exceeds his teacher and becomes invested within the philosophy of living life to the fullest. Dorian exceeds Henry in Pater’s philosophy through his active experimentation and desire for beauty, but Dorian fails to live up to all of Pater’s expectations due to his inability to separate morality for art.

The tragedy of the young Dorian Gray after becoming misled by his companion, Lord Henry Wotton, is one that causes many to reform ideas on life and purpose. Lord Henry believes in hedonism, a thought stating that pleasure is the only true good; he declares, “The only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfilment of the senses” (Wilde). This outlook is tempting for many persons, including that of the title character, Dorian Gray. In contrast to Lord Henry is an artist named Basil Hallward, whom perceives Dorian to be his muse; serving as inspiration, and purpose. Basil has many moral traits including trust, compassion, and kindness. His infatuation with Dorian causes him to change his art and style, composing an exquisite painting of the young boy. Basil states, “the work I have done, since I met Dorian Gray, is good work, is the best work of my life…his personality has suggested to me an entirely new manner in art, an entirely new mode of style. I see things differently.” (Wilde). Dorian becomes so mesmerized by the beauty of the picture and the words of Lord Henry that he wishes for the picture to depict his sins and age, rather than his physical being. The idea of the picture being able to remain youthful and beautiful for all of time, while Dorian must endure all the signs of aging is too much for him to bare. In jealousy and anger Dorian wishes that it be the portrait that bare the signs of aging and sin and he be the one that retains his beauty forever. Dorian says, "Oh, if it were only the other way! If the picture could change, and I could be always what I am now! Why did you paint it? It will mock me some day - mock me horribly!"
