To describe the concept of ‘personal fable’, which was explained with a wide variety of examples during our adolescence lecture, I chose to write about the adolescence stage presented in the Nickelodeon show House of Anubis created by Anjali Taneja. Nina Martin, a 17-year-old teenager from America, moves to a British Boarding School in England. She struggles to fit in during her first days of entering this new environment, as a girl named Joy recently disappeared immediately before her arrival, and Joy’s best friend Patricia believes Nina is responsible for Joy’s disappearance. This includes the ‘Identity vs. Role Confusion' crisis in adolescence. Teenagers are attempting to find their unique abilities, what they like to do, and which place in society that they feel they belong to, while still developing their genuine sense of self. Erikson declares that adolescents should explore the possibilities and opportunities they have around them and commit to them according to how well these endeavors match their individual traits and interests. It was complicated for Nina to start her life in an entirely different country and adapt to the opportunities and people available at her new school since she received a scholarship, all while leaving her grandmother back home alone. Meanwhile, she has another girl pushing her to complete initiation ceremonies and she must live with these other students too, who she cannot escape from unless she leaves the school. The fact that Nina was trying to form connections and make peace with the people that she literally must live with, shows her extensive focus on those around her to gain interpersonal contentment with the cards she was dealt in life. Freud’s theory is not applicable to House of Anubis because this show is all about the emotional and psychosocial behaviors in society, rather than the sexual element of humans. Freud believes the last stage, which happens during puberty and for the rest of your adulthood, is all about sexual intimacy and genitals. I understand his perspective because babies start their lives while having many sucking inclinations and humans are naturally sexual creatures. However, scholars, parents, and workers alike spend their entire days focusing on endeavors and commitments which are not related to sex, so I believe that to say our whole development is focused on sex is crazy. People care about more than just that, and there is a wide range of humanity to explore outside of the topic of
