Have you ever wondered what exactly makes a good teacher? Is it the caring nature that inspires students to learn? Or is it the teachings itself that drive students to learn more? Horace Mann, the father of education, had theories of his own on what makes a worthy teacher and a successful learning environment. He believed that knowledge was a powerful tool that should be given to everyone and that knowledge was an equalizer for mankind. Mann also argued that a good teacher, ought to fit very specific criteria in order to be successful. Overall, I agree with Mann’s points on the power of education. It allows students to think differently and creatively while allowing them to see how they can change the world. Horace Mann’s knowledge theory promotes this idea. For example, Mann argued that practical knowledge is a tool that everyone was entitled to and that it was incredibly powerful. Mann explained that practical knowledge is what helps people compete in society (fairly). Knowledge helps people excel and change classes in society. It gives people a chance to contribute to society in a positive way. In many ways, Mann argued that it was a form of justice. For instance, Mann thought that once you learn to read and write, the world becomes filled with endless opportunities. I fervently agree that we still see Mann’s knowledge theory at work in today’s society. Mann believed that the best people to teach were females. Females, he argued, contained a nurturing instinct that is needed in order to teach students. I vehemently disagree. In order to be a good teacher, being passionate is the key to success. It is imperative that you love what you do and that passion will seep into your work. Whether you are a man or a woman, it is important to love your job and you can see just how much the world will change because of that. Mann’s theory of transmission does not apply in today’s society. There are many male teachers that are excellent and have left a strong and positive outlook on students. While men are still outnumbered in this field, it does not mean it is due to a lack of competency. Thesis: I agree that teacher qualification is an essential element in providing excellent education in public schools and many of the concepts Horace Mann advocated continue in public school education even today.
As I read these articles, I agreed with almost everything that was said. The Great Teacher Question: Beyond Competencies, by Edward R. Ducharme begins with a sentence that basically sums up my reason for teaching, “I begin this essay by defining a great teacher as one who influences others in positive ways so that their lives are forever altered” (Ducharme, 1991 p. 2). Over the course of a student’s education they will have many teachers, but there are maybe only one or two who are THE teacher. The teacher who impacts this child’s life in a positive way forever. He directly opposed Mann’s work in Massachusetts on the formation of a centralized, state run school board on the grounds that state power over the educational process would result in biased and undemocratic instruction lending favor to one political interest group or another. In addition Brownson held the belief that the state normal schools which were conceived and vehemently supported by Mann would produce teachers well informed in pedagogic methodology, while nearly uninformed in the area of academic concepts beyond the scope of elementary education.
Because young boys are more active they often are disciplined, while girls are often quieter and naturally become a teacher’s favorite. Mann started off his career in life as a lawyer in Massachusetts. While he was good at being a lawyer he soon found himself elected to the senate set for Massachusetts State. In this position he quickly came to realize that the state’s schools were performing poorly and was highly unorganized. I know that as I grow and learn as a teacher my theory on education will change and grow with me. Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
Upon entering the field of education, I am faced with many questions. Will the students like me? Will I have a large class? Will I be a good teacher? A few of the questions that definitely need to be answered before I enter the classroom, are what methods should I use to teach? What aspects of which methods will work best for me? What philosophy best exemplifies the way I want to bestow the learning process to my students? In my quest to become an elementary teacher I shall use a variety of aspects from past philosophers of education. As long as each child is learning, I feel that I am fulfilling my goal, and a difference is being made, I am on my way to a successful classroom.

I would like to bring this same moral into my classroom, when a child is motivated, passionate,and self-aware of their needs, strengths, and weaknesses, they can and will push themselves to improve. Students do not solely care about how much knowledge an educator has, but they care about how much these educators truly care. We shouldn't judge a person on how educated they are based only on test scores. The most educated person may not be the most suitable person to teach children. I may lack the test scores, however, I do not lack the passion and motivation needed to be a great teacher. If we cannot celebrate small successes, the final outcome is less weighted.
