The Great Gatsby presents the readers with numerous hopes and dreams that one day it will become a reality. The greenlight, Valley of Ashes, and time are all significant symbols that relate with the theme of hope. Although these symbols insert different situations they all become a perfect example of how the idea of hope can drive a person to extreme measures. When thinking about the color green we imagine wealth or money. The color green in this novel represents hope and dreams that may appear. During this book the green light on Daisy’s dock symbolized more than money it was the symbol of Gatsby’s life dream. The thing that's different about this hope is the poor seeks wealth. The Valley of Ashes are the working class people some are content with life others expect more. Myrtle is a good example of the people that seek more out life she associates not only with the wealthy, but also has an affair with Tom. Mr.Wilson believes he has fulfilled his goals, but The Valley of Ashes has caused him to not see how big he can become. “ I’ve been here too long. I want to get away. My wife and I want to go West.” “And now she’s going whether she wants to or not. I’m going to get her away.” Mr.Wilson feels as if Myrtle is not the same women he married (123). This novel has showed the different courses Myrtle has taken and she has changed over the story not so much for better either. The most significant symbol of them all is time! Gatsby wanted to control what happened, how it happened, and when it happened. During Nick and Gatsby's conversation, “ You can’t repeat the past.” “Can’t repeat the past? ...Why of course you can!”, Gatsby seemed puzzled at the fact that Nick did not believe that he can relive the past (110). Gatsby is sure that he can relive his life with Daisy, and unfortunately for Gatsby it made him closed minded. Because of his stubbornness, he ended up with nothing that he wanted, and with the unhappiest ending of them
