There is an image to uphold whether you live in west egg or east egg. They both thought they were better, new money versus old money. Nick Carraway, not only the narrator, but a poor man that moved to try to make a living spoke about where he lived, “I lived at West Egg, the – well, the least fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them. My house was at the very tip of the egg, only fifty yards from the Sound, and squeezed between two huge places that rented for twelve or fifteen thousand a season. Those that are born into that era grew up in a more carefree, extravagant environment that would affect their interactions with others as well as their attitudes about themselves and societal expectations.
