In “Hooked on a Myth”, Victoria Braiyhwaite states that fish feel pain. Even though many think otherwise. I totally agree. In spite of the fact that fish might be seen as dumb , that does not imply that they can't feel pain. I've never been fishing but i can only imagine how much pain they go through and we don't realize because they show empty expressions. In any case, if no one shows their emotions you won't realize what they're going through.
Basically in light of the fact that fish don't have a noteworthy method for communicating their pain, people have a tendency to overlook sensitivity for them. I can just envision a hook cutting into my lip and dragging me to a spot where I couldn't breath. That picture alone makes me realize how
much fish really suffer. In spite of the fact that fish might not have brains as created as our own, regardless they can suffer as we do. Braithwaite's studies all lead to the confirmation that fish do feel. They have the same nerve endings as people furthermore react to chemicals and painkillers in the same way. It basically doesn't bode well that to feel sensitivity for dairy animals or chickens, instead of fish, since they express their suffrage in a different way. I agree with Braithwaite that we should think twice about capturing fish with hooks . Hurting fish is the same as hurting more "conscious" creatures. We, as people, can't obviously characterize "cognizant", despite the fact that we characterize ourselves as so. We have to open our eyes to creatures who are not fit for communicating the pain we dispense on them and figure out how to facilitate the pain.
“Taxonomically speaking, a lobster is a marine crustacean of the family Homaridae, characterized by five pairs of jointed legs, the first pair terminating in large pincerish claws used for subduing prey…. Moreover, a crustacean is an aquatic arthropod of the class Crustacea, which comprises of crabs, shrimp, barnacles, lobsters, and freshwater crayfish” (Wallace, 55). This is an example of Logos since the author uses scientific facts to convey the message he wants to communicate in an objective way. Wallace also uses logos as a persuasive device by presenting facts on the science of the lobster’s neurological system and its ability to feel pain. The Maine Lobster Promotion Council states “The nervous system of a lobster is very simple, and is in fact most similar to the nervous system of a grasshopper. It is decentralized with no brain. There is no cerebral cortex, which in humans is the area of the brain that gives the experience of pain”. Wallace counter-argues this statement by mentioning the fact that since lobsters have a simpler nervous system compared to humans, they are unable to produce their own natural opiates. “One can conclude that lobsters are maybe even more vulnerable to pain, since they lack mammalian nervous systems’ built-in analgesia, or, instead, that the absence of natural opioids implies an absence of the really intense
A defining feature of the lionfish which everyone sees are the “18 venomous spines on its dorsal fin and its pelvic and anal fins, which are used for defense” as described in FACE OFF WITH THE ENEMY: LIONFISH by Special To The Citizen. Which is a neurotoxin that results in intense pain and swelling of one’s body. Fernando Simal, a marine hunter at STINAPA National Marine Park, found out the potency of their venom after his first hunt when being stung by the lionfish he caug...
Manta rays, humpback whales, and dolphins are all gentle giants of the sea. These playful creatures enjoy leaping out of water, creating an unforgettable experience for the tourists of Hawaii (Saito). On the other hand, jellyfish and sharks cause fear in beachgoers because their attacks can lead to painful and life threatening injuries. Swimmers in Hawaii are often victimized by box jellyfish. The stings hurt quite a bit and cause an unpleasant burning sensation. Some people even suffer from a severe allergic reaction to the toxin and are hospitalized (“Dangers in Hawaii”). People may also be hospitalized from shark attacks. Three to four shark attacks occur each year in Hawaii, usually resulting in only the loss of an appendage. However, numerous shark sightings as close as twenty yards away from shore to as far as out at sea have been reported. Jan TenBruggencate’s article, "A Shark Bites off Left Arm of Teenage Kauai Surfer,” tells the story of thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton who fell victim to a shark attack in October of 2003. While surfing in Hawaii, a shark estimated to be 12 to 15 feet long bit into Bethany’s surfboard and took a majority of her left arm. Other major shark attacks include Joe Thomson, 1985, who lost his right forearm, Michael Coots, 1997, who lost the lower portion of his right leg, and Hokuanu Aki, 2002, who lost his left foot. Each victim had to fight with the shark to break free and were lucky to escape with minimal
In “Delusions of Grandeur” by Henry Louis Gates Jr., Gates discusses a big problem and mental state in black communities. He addresses the fact that the mindset of the black youth is in the gutter. In their eyes the only way to fame and fortune is by being a professional athlete. That mindset is destroying and breaking down the black community because out of every black kid trying to be a professional athlete only one out of million is making it to the professionals. Leaving a sufficient gap in black youth striving to be other professionals such as doctors, lawyers, doctors, government officials, business owners, CEOs, accountants, or bank tellers. Furthermore, it ultimately causes blacks to fill out and settle
In 1910, Fish committed his first murder in which he mutilated and tortured his victim. From that point on, he set his sights on children as he saw them as easy targets. Fish traveled from state to state in the 1920's leaving a trail of victims from molestation to cases of children disappearing. Fish would torture, mutilate and eventually murder his victims using what he called his "Implements of Hell" which consisted of a meat cleaver, a butcher knife, and a saw. Fish also like to inflict pain on himself; he would insert needles far into his body to where they would get stuck. He also liked to have people paddle him with a paddle that had nail sticking out of the end so that it would make him bleed.
The poet seems to share the same pain with the fish, observing the scene and enjoying the detail just like enjoying an artwork. The poet lets the fish go because she is totally touched by the process between life and death; she loves life but, meanwhile, is deeply hurt by the life. In the poem, the fish has no fear towards her; the desire to live is in the moving and tragic details when she faces the death.
In her poem "Myth," Natasha Trethewey uses mythology, a unique structure, rhyme pattern, and punctuation to make form and content inseparable. Each of these elements serves to share the stages of grief one goes through one feels at the death of a loved one as well as the feelings of deep loss and longing.
After reading chapter 1 in Beyond Myths and Legends on page 1-17, you will identify and define ten terms related to our study of native cultures. That means you will explain them in three or four 7th grade sentences. They are:
There once was a god named Perculus, he was one of the three lost gods that were destroyed by Zeus. He was the god of education; he was responsible for teaching all the citizens of Greece the basic ways of living. Once Zeus got into power he was jealous that someone other than himself was teaching the citizens so he sent him to Hades, along with two other gods for other personal reasons, Diminutive the original god of Truth and, Gargantuan the god of punishment.
At the time of his birth, his father was aged seventy-five years and his mother was thirty-one years of age (Rawlins, 2003). Fish’s family had a history of mental illnesses. At the age of five, Fish’s father passed away and his family could not function properly without him. Up to this point, Fish had been part of an unhealthy household in terms of mild conflict but was not physically abused in any way. The relationship between his mother and father was not ideal, and there were often high levels of stress in the atmosphere (Taylor, 2004). Fish’s mother saw the father’s death as a sort of escape and placed Fish in an orphanage. It was at this point in his life that Fish experienced major abuse and psychological trauma in the form of punishment from the orphanage workers (Rawlins, 2003). Fish was addicted to masochistic activities, and was reported to often inflict pain on himself with the purpose of self-pleasure. By analyzing the ways Fish acted in his early life and comparing it to the early trauma he endured, it is evident that the two have a strong connection to one
Can your social class define your ethical belief? Is it possible to define you but what you have and your ranking in society? Is it a Myth of Fact? There have been psychological and cognitive evidence that people from higher class have a higher chance of being in a higher risk of having lower unethical behaviors.
McGlynn sees this as an allegory: “the sea here stands for the unknown, the lifeboat the confined safety of the known, while the animals are various virtues…[Richard Parker] symbolizes a dark and seemingly intractable threat, one that exists beyond reason, that operates on pure instinct alone.” Richard Parker is similar to the old testament God, although in this case, Pi does not feel like he has done anything wrong, until he has killed the fish. When a flying fish attack took place, due to hunger, Pi became non-vegetarian and broke his morals by killing the fish. To kill the fish with a hatchet took several attempts because Piscine could not bring himself to kill so viciously, so after several minutes of debating, Pi made the smart decision to eat and not starve. He killed the fish by wrapping it in a blanket and bending the fish until he felt no struggling and flopping. After he heard the snap in the bones, Pi started to cry. He “wept heartily over this poor little deceased soul. It was the first sentient being I had ever killed. I was now a killer. I was now as guilty as Cain. I was sixteen years old, a harmless boy, bookish and religious, and now I had blood on my hands.” Pi felt guilty for the death of the fish, saying, “I never forgot to include this fish in my prayers” (Martel 183). The killing, that was caused by Pi, was very difficult for him
The Zebrafish Danio rerio is increasingly used as a research model in human and animal health, and biological and gene research fields, and is a critical material for the research as they ensure that the outcome of the research are valid to apply to medical prescription or further studies (Van Den Buuse, et al. 2005). However, public perception towards animal welfare has discouraged the use of animals, especially terrestrial animals, in research (Williams, 1988). Sentience or consciousness in fish is still being debated among scientists and welfare advocates, with various parameters (Brown, Culum 2015; Daenen, et al. 2002). This lack of understanding in fish intelligence limits welfare activity and allows scientist to use as research
There are quite a few types of unsustainable fishing practices, some of which are dynamite fishing, electro-fishing, cyanide fishing and bottom trawling. Dynamite fishing is the act of killing a number of fish at once with explosives. These bombs kill some wish and hurt the others destroying their homes and the places they live in. This type of fishing can also hurt the people that are fishing. It is illegal in a number of places but is still practiced very commonly. Electrofishing uses electricity to stun fish. It is mainly used to examine fish and after done examining these fish they are put back into the water. This doesn’t exactly kill the fish but it does injure some parts of their body like their spine and also bleeding of their gills. Cyanide fishing is fishing for aquariums using a chemical called cyanide to st...
One of the most unique creatures are fish. As I am sitting here in my room, my fish are swimming about with not a care in the world. I wonder what it would feel like to be a fish.
