The legal form of the Honors Program is a non-profit entity under the University of Nebraska at Kearney, which is a state agency, and files Form 501c3 to allow it tax-exempt status. Mission Statement The current mission statement for the Honors Program is “to provide a more rigorous and enriching undergraduate experience for students in the Honors Program.” This mission is carried out through special classes, extracurricular opportunities, and a community of Honors Students, and is believed to benefit the entire campus community. Goals and Objectives The goals of the Honors Program are to obtain students who strive academically; to use coursework as a foundation for study abroad, undergraduate research, community service, and leadership development;
and to live in an environment with a commitment to quality and community. These goals meet all five of the requirements for SMART goals; they are specific, measureable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. The goals are specific because students know what is expected of them. They are measurable because the Honors Program keeps track of how many students participate in each activity. The achievable requirement is met since many students have completed the Honors Program successfully. The goals are relevant because they require more, academically, from students, and this is the purpose of the program. Finally, the goals are time-bound because they must be met within four years of undergraduate work. Team The Honors Program has a team of five members. Dr. John Falconer is the Director, Jane Christensen is the Associate Director, Susan Campbell is the Secretary, Kaley Hodgen is currently the Graduate Assistant, and Amanda Slater is currently the Student Worker. There is also the Honors Student Advisory Board (HSAB) which is made up of 16 current Honors students who plan events and act as an intermediary between the students and the five team members. To be selected to HSAB, the students must complete an application and an interview with current members of HSAB. The current members then confer and decide who is best qualified for the organization.
National Honors Society is an extremely prestigious and well-known group that gave me the opportunity to assist the community while working harmoniously with my peers. To get into NHS, there are four pillars one must fulfill, including, scholar, service, leadership, and character. One may not realize it, but these qualities apply all throughout life. In order to be successful, one must achieve some form of each pillar. Being dedicated and committed to learning and improving but also using the knowledge one previously has is to be a scholar. Giving back to one’s community by making improvements or donations or simply just being courteous to one’s neighbor is to give one’s service. Taking the initiative to solve problems and guide others towards
During 2017, the fall of my senior year, we held elections for National Honor Society President. I was one of the members selected and later got elected into the position. This position has taught me the importance of quality leadership in order for the success of a program along with how to prioritize my time and stay organized while helping to engage members to enable them to be the best people they can be. Throughout my months as president, I have contributed experience, advice, and leadership alongside hours and hours of time put into an array of projects benefiting both the school and the community as a whole. Experiencing this event which has influenced both my leadership and service to my community has influenced my future plans through
Some of my extracurricular activities include Science Olympiad, STEM Academy, International Club, Advanced Academics Club, and Chem Club. During high school I have participated in various community-based organizations, the two most common being Beta Club and National Honor Society. However while these clubs have allowed me to give back to my community in numerous ways, it was strangely not either of these clubs that expanded my interest in the following particular social issue. Rather it was my involvement in Science Olympiad, specifically volunteering to help run a local Elementary school tournament, that expanded my view of the STEM field.
It is a tremendous honor to be considered for membership in the most prestigious Honor Society available at Wapato High School. It is even more grand to be able to work towards enrollment in the Society side by side with such an astoundingly gifted group of young men and women. I am only being considered for potential membership in the National Honors Society because I have demonstrated an exemplary academic attitude, and have proven this through the grades I have attained during the years I have spent in the Wapato School District and the fondness amongst my teachers I have achieved. There are also other characteristics besides good scholarship I must fill for membership in the Society, those being services I have done to benefit others in the community, leadership positions I have held, and an original and interesting demonstration of
The first characteristic scholarship, is best defined as a commitment of learning. All National Honor Society members are required to maintain a GPA of 93 or higher. I have worked hard to maintain a GPA to those standards, and I have made my best effort to be on honor roll or principal’s list every quarter of my academic
When candidates are competing for an award, a job, or an honor, they often use the qualities of their character as evidence as to why they deserve it. I certainly understand and believe in the necessity of qualifications; however, I have also always believed that having a plan of what one will do with a certain honor is an integral part of deserving it. That is why this essay is not about my previous accomplishments. This essay is a declaration of my ideas to serve as a representative of Seton Hill University by making the community, state, and country a better place for all.
Scholarship, leadership, character, service and citizenship are the key building blocks to a successful National Honor Society member. I believe that I represent and exemplify these attributes and possess qualities that would contribute positively to the grandioseness of National Honor Society. Scholarship is an essential key to a successful student and I believe I harbor this characteristic, as I have a vehement commitment to learning. In my opinion, education is crucial to have a prosperous life, therefore, I spend an abundance of my time diligently acquiring knowledge. Moreover, I consistently work to the best of my ability, regardless of merit or acknowledgment.
If accepted to the UNCW Honors College I hope to gain better academic skills, I hope to make new connections and build relationships that will benefit my future, I also hope that I will be more motivated to push myself to do better, to grow personally, and to be able to step out of my comfort zone with confidence that I can succeed.
Being that I'd come from a rural area middle school with limited options for class outside of required knowledge, honors classes were a token to me and I learned quickly that they weren’t easy whatsoever. I heard the word “honors” and instantly jumped
