Recommended: Impact of computers on society

I am interested in joining the Honors College because I believe that it will encourage me to go beyond my boundaries and explore myself and my aspiring field of computer science in ways that otherwise wouldn’t be possible. The College’s Study Away program will provide a rigorous learning experiences outside of the classroom in addition to what I will experience inside. The Ecology of Innovation: Silicon Valley program, led by Dr. Adam Watkins, has specifically caught my attention, as it explores how innovation is leveraging social, technical, and environmental factors in order to maximize innovative potential and therefore change the world. This is the ultimate goal of computer scientists, and being exposed to how to accomplished that goal …show more content…

Due to the high-caliber of the faculty and research opportunities offered by them at the undergraduate level, many of them have requested to work with Honors College students. Being a part of this network would not only allow me to make new connections with the faculty and the research I am involved in, but it will also allow me to collaborate with other bright Honors College students to make meaningful contributions to that research. One research opportunity that is only available to Honors College students that interests me is the Interactive Visualization for Home Energy Interactions project led by Dr. Sabine Brunswicker. The goal for the students is to support the research team with designing and developing the energy data visualizations for the three different devices for research purposes. During my internship at Expedia Inc. this past summer, I helped create a similar data visualization dashboard for my team, so I know that this is something I would be interested in. Opportunities like this, which will directly impact the community (and the environment), are what I look most forward to as an Honors College student.
