Since my freshman year I have tried really hard to keep my grades up. I didn't wait till my junior year to try my hardest in my classes like a majority of students do.. I gave it my all and tried being on the principal's honor roll every year. Last year my hard work paid off because I was on the superintendent's honor roll, which was a huge accomplishment for me. I have also prepared for college by taking multiple dual credit classes. Even though dual credit english is kicking my butt, I have learned so much from Mrs. Dale already. Before her class I did not know how properly write an essay, but I know that by the end of the year I will be able to. By taking her class it will prepare for my for my other college classes in the future.
Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. As I began to walk to the stage to receive my certificate for making the AB honor roll, my knees begin to wobble. I tone out the cheers and the voice of my mom yelling my name. I wipe my sweaty palms on my jeans as I came closer to stairs. Each step I took, I continue to ask myself why, today of all days, I forget to bring my jacket.
Throughout my two years in high school, I have been trying to maintain a certain grade point average. I’ve passed two of my state tests already and I have yet to take my English II and U.S. History state test. I passed my Algebra I test in 8th grade with Proficient and my Biology I test my freshman year with Proficient. My grades fell off the first 9 weeks of this school year because I had a hard time understanding English II and I ended up scoring Basic on my 1st 9 weeks benchmark test. Now I have made a promise to myself that I will be advanced in everything from now on. I’ve been studying more and working in my SATP practice booklets and now my grades are improving. When I was in 2nd grade I was accepted into the Gifted/Excel class at Bentonia Gibbs up until my 7th grade year at Yazoo County Junior High. Ever since junior high, I have been in the advanced classes, and I hope that will help me with my plan to graduate as one of the top of my class.
Growing up, my parents never expected perfection but expected that I try to accomplish my best. The effort I’ve put forth in learning has been reflected in my grades throughout my high school career. I’ve entered myself in vigorous course work such as AP Government and AP English to become well prepared for my college career, all while maintaining a 4.4 grade point average this year. Not only do I engage in AP classes, but up until this year I had no study halls. I wanted my day to be packed full of interesting classes that I would enjoy learning about. My grades and choice of classes prove the effort that I put forth in my learning. Working hard now can only pay off in the future. Learning now creates a well-rounded human being. Working to learn is why I am so dedicated to my studies now.
Academics has always been an important part of my life. Ever since I was a young child my parents have pushed me to lead good life academically. All throughout grade school I have had decent grades (generally speaking in the nineties or above), and I owe this, at least partly, to my parent's determination to give me the best possible education. I also owe this to my will to be at the top of my academic game. This was naturally quite easy for me up until my senior year of high school. When my senior year came around, there was a lot of pressure on me to make a lot of life changing decisions. When all of this was put on me, the last thing that i wanted to do was change the way i was living. I loved the way my life was, and going away from home to college wasn't something that i felt i was ready to do. Because of this i decided to enroll in Genesee Community College, which is about five minutes away from my house.
Mrs. Plot, one of the hardest English teachers in Murray County High School, was my teacher that year. She was a very determined and driven teacher that did not tolerate her students to fail her class, even if they were lazy. I had heard horror stories from her former students, but she was nothing like they said she was. She was the only teacher that I have connected with all throughout school. I looked forward to her class every morning because she always made learning fun. Mrs. Plot gave out good advice about English, but she also gave me personal advice and was more of a friend to me. She always knew what to say to me when I had problems. She motivated me to do better with my writing; we went to a journalism class together every week that year. Mrs. Plot deepened my love for reading and writing. Without her, I would not be the kind of student I am today. On every assignment in her class, I got the most feedback and it helped me out a lot. It took me a long time to become a decent writer, but with her help she sped up the process. I put all of my effort in every single paper I have written, especially for her
Possessing character traits such as cooperation, time-management, honesty, and perseverance has shaped me into the successful student I am today. Over the summer, I was employed at Six Flags St. Louis. This job has taught me how to cooperate with others and work as a team to get tasks done in a timely manner. I also have to take on responsibility with handling money and make sure I arrive at work on the times I am scheduled to do so. All throughout my high school career I have enrolled in classes that have challenged myself including AP European History, AP Chemistry, Honors Biology, and AP Government. I have persevered through theses classes and worked very hard to maintain outstanding grades. Throughout my life my mother has always been my backbone and push me to strive for excellence and be academically perfect. I was taught to go above and beyond everyone else in class and work nonstop without excuses. However, the pressure from my mom triggered a negative effect in me and I eventually shutdown. Though I still managed to finish strong I felt that I did it to please my mom. That is why going to college is so important to me because I know that I can go to college and be triumphant on my own, so right now I am pushing through adversity in an attempt to prove myself right.
Throughout this semester I realized that college is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I developed skills that I believe will help me get through my classes to come. I know I wouldn’t have been able to realize the complexity of college without the help of my Professors. They showed me college isn’t a joke, and that I need to work hard in order to get high grades. This semester was a headache because I was going through the transition from high school to college. I was learning new things and I lacked the traits a college students needs to have in order to do well. I know now that my next semester will defiantly go smoothly, because I now believe I have the traits a college student should contain thanks to my Professors!
College has been such a culture shock for me. I never would have pictured myself being here. I am a freshman at the Community College of Rhode Island after unsuccessfully tried The talent development program at the University of Rhode Island. From the help of my teachers, family, and friends I have taken many of the necessary steps in completing my long and short term objectives. Because I have chosen to take hard classes in high school and get involved in numerous activities, I already have credit for many college classes. Another way that I am clearly prepared to achieve these goals set ahead of me is through the organization and responsibility of keeping up with my grades and getting college applications in on time. I did not fail any of my classes and instead received good grades for my perseverance. As an immigrant to a new country, my greatest barrier is English. Consequently, I had to go to tutoring and work three times more than native English speaking students. But despite the frustrations, I never allowed myself to give up. As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
As I started to advance into my high school education, I noticed that my attitude about school and grades was not going to get me anywhere. I went to school and goofed off with my friends and did enough work to get a decent 70 on my work and go home. I had no “active responsibility”, as Freire would say, because I didn’t have anything to motivate me to want to do well. It all changed when I started high school at Bear Grass Charter School. Bear Grass had just reopened as a charter school my freshman year.
